Nice job, anti-vaxxers

For anyone that doesn't understand why so many of us care whether or not other people vaccinate their children, I give you EXHIBIT A. The measles, considered eliminated in the U.S. as of 2000, is now popping up in NYC & other metro areas. Your choice not to vaccinate absolutely does affect other people. We have a right to give a shit about your decision on this.

eta, not to imply that all religious people are anti-vaxx, but this particular community is.

For more terrifying information about this, check out the link. It is an interactive world map where you can zoom in on specific areas, filter diseases, etc. But horrifying...all the illnesses are things that we have vaccines for. I can't even begin to understand that anti-vax mentality...

Edit: When you click on the link, on the left-hand side, there is a menu. Go from the "Introduction" tab to the "Map" tab to see what I was talking about!

On this topic, I read this special little gossip tidbit today:

Can't say I'm surprised. "The Hills" didn't exactly scream educated.

  • Good link, thanks for sharing!

I work in healthcare (direct patient care) and some of my coworkers are anti-vaxx for no specific reason...people that should know better!  I really want to slap them. Maybe I should just start collecting a bunch of links like the ones shared here and start spamming their facebook walls... (actually, I am way to shy to do that, but I might start sharing them on my newsfeed)

I can't believe all of you are pro-vaccinations.  FTR I am too but I'm so used to the anti-vaccinating moms preaching to me about poisoning my kid.  In fact one of the FB groups I'm part of is up in arms over this article because they insist non-vaccinating moms are not responsible for this.

  • But you guyzzzz, the rate of death from measles is so low, and, like, if you just feed your body healthy things then it will be powerful enough to fight off anything. The human body is amazing. The kids getting measles are probably eating dairy products and nonorganic food, for realzzz.

I will never understand people who don't vaccinate. I get those who CAN'T vaccinate, and I accept those who don't for religious reasons (even if I don't get it). But anyone who simply chooses not to because "autism" or "ZOMG, big Pharma...RAWR!" is just too stupid for words. I really don't trust that they're responsible enough to care for another human being. When this child is born, if someone is not up to date on their shots (esp. MMR and DTaP boosters), forget seeing the baby, they're not welcome inside the house. Maybe that's going overboard, but at that fragile stage, I'm okay with being a touch paranoid.
  • If I'm not mistaken, there was a recent measles outbreak in a city outside of Boston, as well. Thanks again, morons.
    Yep, in Framingham. https://www.boston.com/lifestyle/health/blogs/daily-dose/2014/02/25/measles-contaimnation-case-expands-second-location/PeylzdM1tisMDKCUuWvH9I/blog.html

  • I choose to vaccinated (in fact, my daughter got her MMR shot last week), but I think the reason people are upset with this article and it's headline is that the outbreak in NY was not started by anti-vaxxers. In fact only 2 of the 19 cases are children who's parents chose not to vaccinate. The others were too young or older and did not get their booster (those born before 1985 need to get one). I feel this article's headline and blame is inflammatory and does nothing to help the vaccination cause.

And the people who use Jenny McCarthy as an excuse to not vaccinate need to get caught up - it's come out that her son never had Autism.

Actually, that's inaccurate. Her son is indeed autistic. That was a tabloid article not a reputable source

Oh, dang. I see that did just come out. Sorry. Hard to keep up with this stuff. It was on more than just tabloid sites last year.
  • Oh awesome! Well I guess everyone thinking they have the herd immunity for their children are pretty much f**ked. My daughter got her MMR vaccine already, so she's good. But of course now I have to be overly cautious with the baby hitting this family in August, swell. If there is zero medical reason against vaccinating your kids get it done, selfish assholes.

I read of a girl who was completely up to date on her vaccinations had to have a chunk of her brain removed at 5 because she ended up with meningitis. Her body wasn't using the vaccines she was given somehow, so she had zero immunity from it. Those are people that need to be protected by the herd immunity, not people who think they are too special not to get them. I would link the article, but I read it years ago and can't find it again unfortunately.

  • I'm in SoCal, and at my DD's last check-up, her pedi said to watch out for anyone with flu symptoms and a rash because there have been 17 cases of measles just in our area! I was like jeezus, isn't this supposed to not be a problem anymore??
A ex-friend of mine once basically called me a bad mom for vaccinating….that quickly ended our friendship.

  • This just makes me livid... Now between people not vaccinating their kids or animals we'll be back to third world status in no time.. Measles, rabies what else could completely screw up or hurt our population? Granted kids are not our pets but vaccines were created for a reason and more often do more good than harm! My stepmom made a comment about vaccinating and autism and I had to ignore the statement and merely say, well my kids are getting their vaccines just like I did. End.of.discussion.

OMG, I totally agree with all of this. It bothers me so much that they use the "autism" excuse, which as far as I know has been proven to not actually be caused by vaccines (feel free to correct me if I'm wrong).

I feel like its becoming a fad not to vaccinate people are so scared of autism ( alot of ppl think the MMR vaccine causes autism) but I am sorry I would take a child who has autism and is healthy then being responsible for my child contracting one of the preventable diseases and possibly dieing or being severally disabled how do these parents sleep at night? ( I am not making light of autism in anyway)
Also, this ^. I'd rather have a healthy, functioning child (with autism) than a grave where my child is buried because they died of some preventable disease. I don't understand- why would you risk something like death and severe disability? Especially when those things and the suffering involved is preventable?!

FTM here....If their kids are vaccinated, why are people scared or angry? Shouldn't they feel secure that the vaccine their children got has built some anti-bodies and even if they still contracted measles, it won't hit them as hard because of it? I'm missing something here....

You don't get the first MMR shot until 12 months unless there is an out break, then it can be recommended for 6-9 months. If you bring your infant to a store/park/doctor's office/etc. before they are vaccinated or have the antibodies then they can become infected and become very ill because someone else was irresponsible and didn't vaccinate their child.

Also, 5% of people who are vaccinated with the MMR vaccinate will not be immune to the disease. Some people just do not develop antibodies for things (I knew a woman who had to go through the hep B vaccines 2 additional times for nursing school before they would say she would never develop antibodies) Other people vaccinating and helping to keep these diseases away helps that 5% from becoming ill.

Additionally... children are getting VERY ill because their parents won't vaccinate them for preventable diseases!

  • So proud of all of you ladies.  As a Pediatric ER doc, I spend too much of my time with sick kids.  It's very disheartening to have to tell a parent that their child has a completely PREVENTABLE (as PP have all said, nearly 100%) illness because of misinformation that scared them away from vaccines!
  • That's the thing that pisses me off about anti-vaxxers. This is not a parenting choice or a "mind your own business" thing. It affects ALL of us! I hate the fact that I will have to worry about my kids catching some deadly disease because people are idiots. Frankly, I think anti-vaxxers should be charged with reckless endangerment at the very least, if not full out manslaughter. There's just no reason that putting millions of lives at risk without legitimate medical reason should be legal.
