My UO is that I really hate it when people post sonogram pictures of their baby's junk with the giant arrow pointing to the penis saying, "BOY!"

Yeah well, I believed you the first time you said it's a boy. You don't have to show me the child's genitals to prove it. It's not like I questioned you or the tech.

Haha, people do this?  I joked about posting our boy's on Facebook as our pregnancy announcement.   DH and I laughed about how totally bizarre that would be.  Poor kids, give them an ounce of privacy.

Totally agree.  I refuse to even let people see the sonogram pictures of LO's genitals.  DH did show his dad, who apparently had to see it to believe it ( 8-| ), but I believe that's it (maybe my mom saw it when scrolling through pictures?).  I made it perfectly clear when we were expecting DD that no one needed to see her stuff, so don't even ask.
Forgive my tangent thought here, but...
This is reminding me of my MIL who asked me if I got they gave me a pic of baby's genitals from the AS scan I just had done.  She still doesn't believe it is really a girl even after I had the Harmony/blood cell testing done weeks ago and got the results saying it's a girl.  She keeps saying the results are only 99% accurate and that there's still a chance it's a boy?  I told her that the tech ID it as a girl, but did not give me a pic to take of her genitals, so she still thinking it could be a boy.  I guess she's disappointed, because she already has 4 grand daughters and just one grandson, but I did "give" her the one grandson!
  • For some reason it irks me when people claim an entire week or month to celebrate their birthday. Sorry, it is in the name, birthDAY, not birthmonth or birthyear. If you feel the need for people to fawn all over the fact that you survived another year for more than a day then...

Our birthdays last forever because we can only go do what DS 2yrs will let us do. Lol. So it's eat at a nice restaurant today, go to a movie next weekend & etc. Lol.

But yes, I totally agree with you about jerks who expect the moon to be roped for them! Gifts every day for a month?! What the crap?

  • I am going to get a LOT of heat for this one... but my UO is that I think you shouldn't pierce your baby's ears.

I was a kid who was told that I had to wait until my tenth birthday. I remember being so excited, and did it when I was good and ready.

I know parents say they would rather get it over with so the baby doesn't remember the pain, but my thought is that you should just pierce their belly button while you are at it too, because they might want that down the road and we wouldn't want them to remember that pain!

I STILL can't sleep with earrings in, and they still drive me nuts, so I just can't imagine making my little baby uncomfortable for no reason.

I don't know... just seems unnecessary to me at that age.
I don't see it as a big deal. I had my ears pierced when I was a newborn. It's part of my culture. I have no issues with earrings and still had to do the "waiting to get my ears pierced" when I wanted more.
Totally understandable for cultural purposes. I never thought about that - thanks for the info!

BUT IT IS MY BIRTHDAY SEASON!!! JK, I expect no acknowledgements from anyone but Mister. And I buy myself nice things. After I dislocated my shoulder on my birthday last year, we did have a do-over celebration that was vicodin-free.

On the topic of diet....it really bothers me when people claim "gluten intolerance". It's just the newest bandwagon to jump on. My neighbors have both decided they are gluten intolerant. The chick will make comments to me about my unhealthy pasta salad, while she makes fried cube steak covered in heavy cream sauce. I want to smack her.
I will second this for people who don't legitimately have a gluten issue. Its become a fad diet that is actually pretty horrible for you. However, there are a lot of people who do legitimately have a gluten allergy or a GI disease like Celiac that makes going gluten free necessary. (Myself included)

Writing out C U Next Tuesday or See You Next Tuesday is dumb.  I know it's against the TOU to call someone a name, but wasn't it determined you could say someone was acting in that way instead.  So, I can't call anyone a cunt, but I could say they are acting like a cunt.  What is the need to write out a full sentence for 4 whole letters (especially when we use acronyms for pretty much everything else on here)?  If you're so offended by the word to use the actual word, then why are you using something that everyone recognizes stands for that word?
At the risk of looking idiotic, until this I had no clue what c u next tuesday was. I know....dumb!

I think that putting tubes in children's ears is a massively overabused medical treatment.  I have always sworn that I would never let that procedure be done on my children. Of course, karma has come back to bite me and my daughter has limited hearing in one ear due to fluid build up. It looks like we MAY have to consider the option moving forward.

My DD had ear infections every 6 weeks for the first year of her life. Guess what? After the tubes, no ear infections and she's hardly ever sick! SO worth it to me.

Do you know how non-invasive it is as well?

Yes, I do and I don't think that it is never a solution, just that it is often performed when it isn't really necessary. I will obviously consider it if my daughter's hearing and speech development are being affected by it and I am glad that it worked out well for your daughter.

I know, i know. Totally a weird kid.

But I absolutely do not understand the fear of clowns. It makes no sense to me, like being afraid of Bugs Bunny or something.

Not snarky at all :-) It's an unpopular opinion for a reason. I know in many cases they are a last resort and truly necessary, but to me they fall into the category of antibiotics and tonscillectomies (SP?) which I feel are also overdone, but I tend to be a very low intervention person when it comes to medicine.

I was terrified of clowns when I was little.  Then I hit late grade school age and thought that I would conquer my fear by collecting clowns.  I had a bunch of them... and then suddenly in middle school my fear returned and all of the clowns freaked me the heck out and I had to get rid of them.  For some reason I think that all clowns are secretly psycho killers.  To this day I still do not LIKE clowns, but I don't freak out if I see one or anything.

Also- I hate the Creme eggs, the insides make me gag just looking at them.

I'm a long time runner, but don't post about my runs, pics of my watch, etc all over social media. I might share a race pic if I have a really good race. But, IMO, no one wants to read about my daily runs just the same as I don't give a crap about their daily scrap booking adventures, stamp collecting, etc.

Ok, I feel like this may be controversial but, it's how I feel.

I don't agree with there being a black history month. There's no Native American history month or Hebrew history month. There's no remembrance of the casualties of war month. There's not a month of celebration for the achievement of women. There's not a month dedicated to the people who've died or lost loved ones during 9/11. There isn't a month celebrating the struggle and achievements of any other race or people. Only days or remembrances. It simply isn't fair or respectful to other races or people. Also, if you seriously think about it, Black history is not just the struggle and achievement of black people. It's the story of our nation coming together and realizing that all men are equal. Slavery was not just abolished for black people. It was abolished for all people. White people were not just afraid of their children marrying and reproducing with black people. They were afraid of their children marrying and reproducing with anyone non white. It was "equality for all" not "ok, black people can join in on the fun now. But, that's it". If it were honestly just the achievement of black people, then Latinos, Asians, Indians and all other races would still be treated as unjustly. So no, I do not agree with "black" history month. Instead, I think it should be called American Achievement month. Or equality month. Something that says we all struggle but we can and have achieved greatness.

And it really pisses me off that by me saying this and not being black, people suddenly consider me a racist :| DW agrees with me on the issue and people view her as a traitor and that she looks down on her own kind. Eff that logic. I'm proud to be who I am just as I am proud to be married to my beautiful African American wife.

I don't disagree with you but I have to point out that it is currently Women's History Month :-)
    ----------------------------

Really? I've only heard of women's day. Hm, learn something new every day. :)
  • I too, am a runner, and have been for well over a decade. The popularity of running and the races that aren't really races and everyone's a runner bullshit actually infuriates me and at the same time makes me happy that other people have found a sport that I've loved for so long. I'm torn. But I do hate that everyone and their brother is a self proclaimed "runner" now.

  • @jensavicciI think you are brave to bring the issue up and your points have shown that you have thought well about the topic and seem to want to empower all groups.

I do want to point out that there is a Women's History Month, it's actually March, but that doesn't change much in regards to the points you've made.

I work in a educational environment where there is so much focus on individual cultures with clubs to engage students of different races and or ethnicity's that I think rather than spread cultural awareness, it seems to perpetuate separateness.  I think as races and cultures continue to become more tolerate and blend through marriages, friendships and in having children, that these walls of separateness will crumble.  I like the idea of celebrating culture, but through educating others by sharing rather than creating environments that segregate,

Originally the idea of sharing information about the African American culture and supporting black pride and celebrating cultural identity was a good one and needed at the time, but I believe that to have a month dedicated to this seems in some ways out dated and may even be harmful to the over all cause and to other cultures and ethnic groups that are considered "non white".

Good for you and your wife for having the discussion and for you to bring the topic up.

Wow, seriously?  We would be beyond grateful if we could both find full-time employment and make enough to actually have to pay taxes.  And no we do not get unemployment or food stamps or much else; aside from state-sponsered health insurance that we were REQUIRED to sign up for and a little assistance from the power company, we do not get help.  But so what if we did?  I can guarantee that most people getting any kind of state assistance DO work their asses off but can't find adequate employment.
I'm guessing you have no idea how difficult it is to actually GET state assistance.  It isn't just handed to you.  You have to prove that you are in financial hardship and that you are trying to overcome it.

Thank you :) and I agree whole heartily. I bring it up because DW's aunt and uncle run a school that is solely focused on African Americans and AA history. I just got done overhearing a conversation of there's and it got me thinking.

Aside from that, I find it odd that women's history month isn't talked about as much as I find that black history month is around here. Honestly, I've only ever heard of women's day and I only found out about it recently. The church I went to when I was a children celebrated women's day but I thought it was just a church celebration.

Thanks to you as well for sharing that! I'll have to ask around and find out what goes on in Philly regarding women's history month.

My UO is that if you choose to go skiing on top of a mountain where there is no actual ski slope and piles and piles of undisturbed snow just so you can get a "thrill," you deserve to get caught in that avalanche.

I don't think anyone "deserves" to be caught in an avalanche and crushed to death and drowned in thousands of pounds of snow, no matter how lacking in intelligence they may be. What a horrible, painful way to go. I think if people choose to go skiing in areas like that, they need to understand that they're accepting the real risk that the may go that way and their families need to not sue anyone or look for retribution if they do die that way, but personally, I can't imagine thinking someone "deserves" to get crushed to death.
While being crushed to death would definitely suck, if you do something stupid or dangerous, regardless of your intelligence level, you definitely do deserve the potential consequences.   Whether you will get lucky and everything will turn out ok is another story, but you do deserve anything bad that happens to you if you make a stupid/risky decision.  If you put your hand in a fire, you deserve to get burned.  If you have unprotected sex with a stranger you just met in a seedy bar, you kind of deserve to get an STD.  It's cause and effect.  ;-)

I guess my issue is with the term "deserve." You make a bad choice, so you "deserve" to die a horrible death? I think people need to understand the consequences, and not go all woes-is-me, life-isn't-fair when those bad choices catch up to them, but I think it's extreme to say someone "deserves" to get crushed to death for a bad choice. I don't think people deserve to escape the consequences of all of their bad choices and I have a hard time mustering sympathy for people who end up a victim of their bad choices, but I don't think people "deserve" shitty, painful things to happen to them when their choices are just dumb, not malicious.

I do think if they have to send someone out to get you, you should pay
Stupid work getting in the way of my bumping.

I get your assertion that nobody "deserves" to die a horrible violent death. Would it be better if I just said they were asking for it and I have no sympathy for them? Especially since in the scenario I'm describing, the people that get caught are usually the ones who set OFF the damn avalanche.

It infuriates me when people do stupid things to put themselves at risk, and then first responders have to put THEIR lives at risk to save their dumbass selves. Like in Hurricane Sandy...people were told MULTIPLE times to evacuate, they were told how bad it was going to be, and yet some people chose to stay and had to be rescued. Now, I don't think they "deserved" to lose their lives or homes, but I do think they are fucking assholes.
Same with Hurricane Katrina, many stayed despite being warned it would be really bad.  I don't know if I think they actually deserve to die, but I do agree it is horrible to put other people like rescuers at risk to save your dumb ass when you ignore the risks that you were fully aware of.  Or people who endanger (and sometimes get them killed) their kids because of that.  I read a story about a guy who took his 15-year old son scuba diving, and they both died b/c the dad thought it would be an awesome idea to explore some underwater caves that he'd already been told were dangerous and NOT to go in unless with another experienced diver.  Neither one was experienced.  People like that...yeah, a fucking asshole.  His kid didn't deserve to go that way.

    Whaaaaat?

Ok, that's crazy. I haven't heard of most of these. Why aren't they being talked about? And some of the ones I have heard of have been shortened to just a day of celebration/remembrance.

ETA: thank you for that btw. It's very helpful.
