Tax season is here and I get so irritated by the fact that we pay in thousands because my DH and I work our asses off and I know people who stay home and get a refund of 10k just by living off the state...WTF
Something is wrong with this picture! Don't punish the people who work hard!
On the candy topic, I've pretty much become a dark chocolate snob (with the exception of Reese's, kit kats, and twix type things). I used to LOVE Cadbury creme eggs. Now I pretty much just want to eat like half of one at Easter for tradition's sake. I actually think most Cadbury brand chocolate is gross and plastic-y. And now I have the sadz because I remembered I can't have any Easter candy this year due to GD. Sad panda.
ETA: to add that white chocolate shouldn't be allowed to have the term chocolate in it. It's gross and needs to go away.
Blasphemy!!!
I will gladly take all the white chocolate you do not want.
I think that putting tubes in children's ears is a massively overabused medical treatment. I have always sworn that I would never let that procedure be done on my children. Of course, karma has come back to bite me and my daughter has limited hearing in one ear due to fluid build up. It looks like we MAY have to consider the option moving forward.
I think Sheryl Sandberg's Ban Bossy campaign is stupid and ineffectual.
Agreed. Rage Against The Minivan posted a great blog post on this. She said no to "banning bossy", but yes to "affirming assertive". I loved the hell out of it because you know what? Sometimes my kid is being a bossy BRAT. Sometimes she refuses to play a game if no one follows her exact rules. That's not being a leader, that's being a tyrant.
I don't want her to be walked all over when she's older, but she does have to have respect and empathy for those around her in situations like that.

I pay more in taxes than my husband gets paid by the government for his job in the Navy (I pay around 45% between federal, california, and all those miscellaneous taxes and SS), so I just tell myself that I am working to pay his salary ;-) But it does drive me crazy when I hear friends talking on FB about being so excited about tax season (because they always get virtually all of their tax dollars back and then some), meanwhile tax season is very painful to us because it reminds us how much we have to pay. I work really, really hard for my money, and it's frustrating that nearly half of it gets taken away every month and I get no say in where it goes. That's why I tell myself I'm paying my husband's salary so I feel slightly less angry ;-) You are welcome America!
I think Sheryl Sandberg's Ban Bossy campaign is stupid and ineffectual.
I totally agree! I see how sometimes people treat women leaders differently than male leaders, but sometimes people really are being annoying bossy jerks!
I've come across a lot of woman leaders who really are bitchy/bossy. And it's not just society treating their leadership qualities as bitchy/bossy. They really are bitches and it is ridiculous. You don't have to be a bitch to lead, ladies.
I may be shunned after this one but I really don't know why people post stuff about their religion, lent and religious dietary restrictions on here. If you are that into your religion then you should know by now what you can and can not do or eat. I know this board is more than just about babies..it's about building friendship with other mothers but I don't talk about religion with my very closest friends and family so why would I want to see a stranger bring up theirs.
That would be me :-) I posted about lenten restictions and I can see why it could be an unpopular thing to post, but I don't talk religion with my friends or coworkers, because it is inappropriate. However, the people on this board (as much as I like you all) are just glorified strangers that I will never meet in the real world, so it doesn't bother me to bring it up. I figure if your interested you'll respond, if not fine. And as for the shouldn't you already know that part, there is a lot of ambiguity within most religions and truly from each individual church to another within a denomination there is variation. Anyway, I'm actually a little pleased that I finally posted something controversial enough to get a second mention :-)

My UO.... I judge people who post unflattering pics of their babies on Facebook. Does being a mom really take away your ability to be objective in terms of whether a photo is flattering or not?
For example, I have a friend who posted a picture from her son's first birthday party that literally looks like he has diarrhea poo smeared all over his face (it's a greenish brown cake frosting). And then she made it her profile picture. And not even in a "isn't it funny that he looks like he has poop all over his face but it's actually cake" kind of way. She thinks the picture is actually adorable. I almost throw up in my mouth a little every time I see a post from her in my newsfeed and see the picture again.
Or when people take pictures from an awkward angle in poor lighting that makes an otherwise cute baby look weird and awkward and unattractive. Is it really that hard for people to figure out how to take a decent photo with an iPhone?
Watch me eat my words when I have a baby and think every single picture of her is adorable regardless of how awkward/awful it might look to an objective person ;-)
Haha, DH does this. One of his cousin's had a baby and she posts the worst photos all the time. He started calling the baby Jabba because each photo made him look more and more like the Star Wars villain.
Then we met the little guy in person and he was as cute as a button. I'm terrible at taking photographs so I try not to say anything, but these picks were so bad they were funny
LOL! I've definitely had friends post pictures of their kids that looked like Jabba too! My SIL used to post super unflattering posts of her kids when they were babies... I was honestly a little scared to meet them in person and have to be like "aww they're so cute!" when from the pictures I thought that they weren't. In person, the kids were ADORABLE!
It's so strange because most people would never post unflattering pictures of themselves on social media, but don't seem to think twice about posting unflattering pictures of their kids. @Bliss+Berry, I seriously doubt that mom would post pictures of herself looking like that! Poor kid :-(
I think that putting tubes in children's ears is a massively overabused medical treatment. I have always sworn that I would never let that procedure be done on my children. Of course, karma has come back to bite me and my daughter has limited hearing in one ear due to fluid build up. It looks like we MAY have to consider the option moving forward.
I also held this opinion until I found myself in a similar situation. 6 months of continual ear infections and speech delay from age 6months to 1 year, resulted in me being open to the procedure and he responded excellent. Never another ear infection, less illness and his speech caught up with in a year.
It's almost like a huge part of mothering is learning to let go of things you held so dearly to in the past. Like my size 6 jeans...

THIS THIS THIS THIS THIS. I said this exact thing to my mother yesterday when she brought it up. It's one thing to be assertive, it is quite another to be RUDE, and that's exactly what "bossy" means to me. I assert myself multiple times a day at work, but I do it with respect for others - there's a big difference.
I understand what she's saying, I guess, but the term "bossy" and how people use it isn't the root cause of creating/raising un-assertive women. It's an awareness thing for sure, just dumb in my opinion...

I am going to piggy back on this. I have a friend who posts the most unflattering photos of her daughter on FB and IG. The poor child is obese and the mother is always posting pics of her shoveling food in her face, licking a brownie bowl or just being completely awkward. I just want to shake her and tell her to stop. The poor kid is going to middle school in another year and I can't imagine how embarrassed she might be over these horrible photos being plastered all over social media by her mother, who keeps calling her "little peanut." Sigh.
This makes me so sad for that child. On a similar note, as DS1 gets older, I am trying to be more aware of posting tons of goofy pics of him and don't take his pic if he doesn't want me to.
I give people a free pass if they post pictures of their food and the food actually looks good (and not even necessarily a type of food I would like to eat, just if the picture makes the food look tasty--like an artsy photo or the restaurant they went to has great presentation skills), but I HATE when people post pictures of food and it's a crappy photo that doesn't look remotely good. Like a picture of mexican food from a regular mexican place with poor lighting that looks like it might be refried beans and rice and a burrito, or maybe someone just got sick on a plate. Gross.
Agreed! I have a friend who started culinary design school (I think that's what it's called) & posts amazing pictures of her progress with cake decorating.
But yeah, no one's queso looks as appetizing as they think it does!
I love cleaning and organizing all of the time. It's like therapy and relaxing for me.
Me too 100%!
LOL! I get sad if there is nothing else to clean. I look around and say "there's gotta be something else for me to clean or organize". Call me crazy! 8-}
I do this all the time, it truly does relax me. My DH jokingly bugs me about my "putter time" when I just cruise the house looking for things to put away/tidy up or reorganize.

See this is my whole problem with Sandberg's banbossy. Bossy doesn't have to be a bad thing. I'm bossy. I don't think bossy is a bad thing and I wonder when it became associated with being rude instead of being assertive. I teach my little girl to be respectful, kind and polite, but if sticking up for herself and being strong willed gets her called bossy then so be it.
My UO is that I really hate it when people post sonogram pictures of their baby's junk with the giant arrow pointing to the penis saying, "BOY!"
Yeah well, I believed you the first time you said it's a boy. You don't have to show me the child's genitals to prove it. It's not like I questioned you or the tech.

Totally agree. I refuse to even let people see the sonogram pictures of LO's genitals. DH did show his dad, who apparently had to see it to believe it ( 8-| ), but I believe that's it (maybe my mom saw it when scrolling through pictures?). I made it perfectly clear when we were expecting DD that no one needed to see her stuff, so don't even ask.
Sometimes it isn't how cute your kid looks that makes you want to post a picture of them, but what they are doing. FX - this weekend we let DS1 have his own bowl of ice cream at a local ice cream shop. He looked so amazed and intent on getting every last drop out of that bowl. The photo I posted isn't the most objectively "cute" one ever taken of the kid, but it captures a moment in time of his growth and development that I wanted to save and remember.

It's so much fun! Growing up a lot of my pics are of me cleaning the dishes with a barstool to prop me up to reach the sink. Back in the day I used to be the same way and work on cleaning my car for hours. Then I would take it for a pointless spin around the neighborhood (showing off) and blast my music. LOL!! Lamesies! I wish I could be the same way with working out!
Maybe this is unpopular. I don't think they should legalize marijuana yet. Not until they can do roadside sobriety tests and have a better understanding of what the legal limit should be and how driving high affects you. We're already pretty miserable at enforcing drunk driving laws, and the effects of alcohol are clear, the limits are well known, and BAC is easily tested roadside. I fail to see how it is safe to legalize another mind-altering drug when we don't have all those things in place yet.
As of right now, they charge you with DUI if you are caught driving while high. From the stories I have read on it, it seems they do some sort of drug test once you get to the station that shows the THC level in your blood. So my guess is they would probably continue to do this...and if they do legalize marijuana, the fact is none of that will happen until after it's legalized. The regulations always come after the law.

On the topic of diet....it really bothers me when people claim "gluten intolerance". It's just the newest bandwagon to jump on. My neighbors have both decided they are gluten intolerant. The chick will make comments to me about my unhealthy pasta salad, while she makes fried cube steak covered in heavy cream sauce. I want to smack her.
I agree! I have a friend who is seriously intolerant to gluten for MAJOR health issues...type that like a gluten free item at restaurant still causes issues because of cross contamination. However whenever I mention her I have to give a little background because I feel bad that everyone assumes she's "one of those" bandwagon people who just claim it as a health thing.
Welp, I can't think of my own cool UO not inspired from anyone else's so I'll just state the obvious.....
I love vaginas! I bet that's a pretty UO
Have a good day ladies
not here it isn't...
there are two motivations in sports, which is yours?
My UO is that if you choose to go skiing on top of a mountain where there is no actual ski slope and piles and piles of undisturbed snow just so you can get a "thrill," you deserve to get caught in that avalanche.
I don't think anyone "deserves" to be caught in an avalanche and crushed to death and drowned in thousands of pounds of snow, no matter how lacking in intelligence they may be. What a horrible, painful way to go. I think if people choose to go skiing in areas like that, they need to understand that they're accepting the real risk that the may go that way and their families need to not sue anyone or look for retribution if they do die that way, but personally, I can't imagine thinking someone "deserves" to get crushed to death.
While being crushed to death would definitely suck, if you do something stupid or dangerous, regardless of your intelligence level, you definitely do deserve the potential consequences. Whether you will get lucky and everything will turn out ok is another story, but you do deserve anything bad that happens to you if you make a stupid/risky decision. If you put your hand in a fire, you deserve to get burned. If you have unprotected sex with a stranger you just met in a seedy bar, you kind of deserve to get an STD. It's cause and effect. ;-)
I guess my issue is with the term "deserve." You make a bad choice, so you "deserve" to die a horrible death? I think people need to understand the consequences, and not go all woes-is-me, life-isn't-fair when those bad choices catch up to them, but I think it's extreme to say someone "deserves" to get crushed to death for a bad choice. I don't think people deserve to escape the consequences of all of their bad choices and I have a hard time mustering sympathy for people who end up a victim of their bad choices, but I don't think people "deserve" shitty, painful things to happen to them when their choices are just dumb, not malicious.
I do think if they have to send someone out to get you, you should pay
Stupid work getting in the way of my bumping.
I get your assertion that nobody "deserves" to die a horrible violent death. Would it be better if I just said they were asking for it and I have no sympathy for them? Especially since in the scenario I'm describing, the people that get caught are usually the ones who set OFF the damn avalanche.
It infuriates me when people do stupid things to put themselves at risk, and then first responders have to put THEIR lives at risk to save their dumbass selves. Like in Hurricane Sandy...people were told MULTIPLE times to evacuate, they were told how bad it was going to be, and yet some people chose to stay and had to be rescued. Now, I don't think they "deserved" to lose their lives or homes, but I do think they are fucking assholes.
Only through the first page, but I've got to go ahead and post because I'm actually busy at work today and may not get back until tonight.
Writing out C U Next Tuesday or See You Next Tuesday is dumb. I know it's against the TOU to call someone a name, but wasn't it determined you could say someone was acting in that way instead. So, I can't call anyone a cunt, but I could say they are acting like a cunt. What is the need to write out a full sentence for 4 whole letters (especially when we use acronyms for pretty much everything else on here)? If you're so offended by the word to use the actual word, then why are you using something that everyone recognizes stands for that word?

My UO is I HATE that "Say Something" song. It was nice the first few times I heard it, and now I want to cut my ears off and shove them in my ear holes every time it comes on the radio. I scream "NO!" at the radio and change the station.
I saw the band that wrote it open for 2Cellos in October, before it made it to the radio. They performed it without Christina (obviously) and it was way better. Then again, I don't listen to any contemporary radio (it's either NPR or classic rock), so I haven't been burned out by it yet.
FWIW they have a great song called "Everybody's Gay."

Agree 100% Not only putting them on social media but I just had to deny my MIL because she wanted me to send her a copy of ours. Um, no. I don't want that picture floating around & being seen by people I don't know. I wouldn't do that once he's out in the world so why does the fact that he's still inside my uterus make a difference?

I understand what she's saying, I guess, but the term "bossy" and how people use it isn't the root cause of creating/raising un-assertive women. It's an awareness thing for sure, just dumb in my opinion...

This makes me so sad for that child. On a similar note, as DS1 gets older, I am trying to be more aware of posting tons of goofy pics of him and don't take his pic if he doesn't want me to.
Agreed! I have a friend who started culinary design school (I think that's what it's called) & posts amazing pictures of her progress with cake decorating.
But yeah, no one's queso looks as appetizing as they think it does!

@TexasGirl81, you are my soul mate.
I do this all the time, it truly does relax me. My DH jokingly bugs me about my "putter time" when I just cruise the house looking for things to put away/tidy up or reorganize.
This literally made me LOL.
@kmawb
