Sorry this is late ya'll! It is 60* here in KY and I've had the little guy outside most of the afternoon. He's been digging in his sandbox and collecting pinecones.

Yesterday H and I did some cleaning! ( he actually DUSTED) without me having to ask! *gasp* we have huge ceilings and skylights and he broke out the ladder and dusted all the Adam's Family style cobwebs we had growing up there.

Anyway- I've been thinking about this a lot and I decided to ask you ladies. It was actually a rather heated debate on another board. I'll give you the cliff notes version:

The argument was over recipes and the idea of secret family recipes. One side said basically it was just food, probably not really a unique recipe anyway, and that recipes are meant to be shared.

The opposing side said- yes, their family had "secret recipes" that were kept in the family.

So- does your family have secret recipes?

I hypothesized that perhaps the idea of a "secret recipe" was a cultural difference... specifically a southern cultural difference...

Any other southern gals wanna weigh in on this?

@Iloveshanej‌ I know you have a lot of your own meat, ect. (I can't recall where you're located!)

So what's your take?

I don't think there are really any 'secret recipes' but more to the fact that no one uses recipes. Both my grandmas cooked for so long they did everything from memory. My dad NEVER uses a recipe and just come up with shit. So secret... kinda? My dad has the best secret recipe for pizza. My grandma is her chile.

@freakyfast‌ my mom sometimes cooks that way. She will make the same dish ten different ways. Oh and she doesn't measure. I'll be like "how much peppers?" And she'll be like "I don't know- just a little." When I really want "a tablespoon" or "1/8 teaspoon" Lol.

KC1212 - EXACTLY!! I think that is how some of them turn into 'secret' when a lot of the time they don't mean to be. My grandma taught me to make enchiladas, and I seriously had to play with it until I got it down. Same with Spanish Rice, her directions sucked, because she never wrote anything down.

We're in Ohio. No real secret recipes in my family on either side. I wish we did! There's a reason people keep those things secret- the food is always so good! One of the ladies at work makes the most unbelievable white chili. I seriously cannot get enough of it. Her recipe is a family secret so I offered to pay her for a batch from time. YUM

A pinch of pepper for chocolate frosting! Yum! I pretty much put pepper on everything anyway -lol.

I've heard chocolate in chili is good...

The women in my family don't cook well so no real family recipes exist. My dad's aunt in Arkansas did give me her apple pie recipe and it's a little unique so I don't share it a lot.

Pinterest has kinda taken the specialness away from those once coveted recipes I think. For example I make this "Snicker Salad" that is a recipe my 5th grade teacher gave me 20 years ago. People would demand that I bring it to parties. Now you can find recipes just like it all over Pinterest and it doesn't seem like a big deal anymore. And that's kinda sad.

That's a really good point. You can definitely find a copycat recipe for almost anything now! I think there are some good recipes that are still hidden out there in families, but unique or uniquely delicious stuff is hard to come by these days!

@KC1212 Sorry, I'm so late to answer. We got power back yesterday just in time to get ready for adoption classes. It was out since Friday at 4 am.

We eat a lot if venison because we are avid hunters and we also have a large seasonal garden. Luckily we didn't loose our stockpile of meat.

I'm very southern and there are certain "cherished" family recipes (a lot if them are canning recipes) that are secret but other then that nothing is off limits.

I think those secret recipes are a way to preserve a family's heritage. KWIM?

My family still uses recipes a lot. I am very recipe oriented, just ask @Mrs. Castillo HAHA :-)

@Iloveshanej‌ I will never forget- my husband and I were newlyweds (I married young. I had just turned 21) and I was still very green in the kitchen. Anyway- my husband went deer hunting and I was venting to my mom " I don't know what he thinks he's going to do with it when he gets one. I don't know how to cook a deer!" (Like you shove the whole deer in the oven!) LMAO.

@KC1212 I hunt too. I used to be a avid archer but the strength in my arms and hands isn't as good as it used to be.

I cook by memory what my mom taught me too, just learn and do lol. I asked a friend for a cookie recipe (not even a good one, just a sugar cookie one that kept its shape we'll and that was what I needed for sharp star points!) and she went crayons cray cray on me that it was a secret family recipe... I was like, a no would've been fine- no need to of gone off. I don't get the whole family recipe thing- you want a recipe- you got it- I'm flattered you liked it!

We don't have any secret recipes, but I do a lot of cooking to taste, so I honestly have no idea how much is in it. I can guess and give people ingredients, but that is about it

@KC1212 I think she means NE Ohio, Newark is about an hour east of where I live in Columbus (I'm on the far west side).
