Drop in weight gain

DD had her 6 month appt today and she dropped below the weight curve. Her doctor told me to start pumping after I feed her and give her the BM in a bottle. She started vegetables about 2 weeks ago and isn't doing great with them yet. I will follow her doctor's instructions (she thinks she might be getting distracted and not finishing) but does anyone else have advice?

I have not met with a LC or done weighted feeds. She's always been tiny (around 5%) but dropped down to 2.5% today. She was 6lb 5oz at birth and was 12lbs 10oz today. Both me and my husband are small so she's expected to be smaller. Her doctor was just concerned because she dropped on the chart.

She eats every 3-3 1/2 hours (maybe once a week will go 4 hours because if a long nap). She BF around 7am, then gets 5oz of BM around 10 and 1::30. I then BF her the remainder of the day.

For pumping, I pump after her morning feed (opposite side that she eats) and I usually get 5 ounces. I pump during her two bottles of the day and will get between 4 and 5.5 ounces each time.

Also, I posted a week or so ago about how I noticed my morning pumped milk is much more watery than my other pumps. She gets my AM pumped milk in her first bottle. Is it possible that this smaller amout of fat for her first two feedings could cause this? She started daycare (when she started with these bottles) the second week of January. This was right around the time of her 4 month appt, which she was fine in weight. It's probably just a coincidence, but the timing matches up.

  • When my DS was having weight gain problems, I would BF then pump for 30 minutes. Then BF and pump and feed the pumped milk from the previous pump. It worked well to get my supply up and to get him up in weight.

I would say that you can give it a try. See if it works and she gains weight like you want.

When introducing foods, kelly mom has a good page with the calories and fat in foods. My DS is small (5th percentile) so we introduced the more high calorie foods (avacado) first, to try to get more calories into him.

  • Thanks ladies. My first reaction was similar to yours.  She's had a little cold for a few days, and this morning she threw up after she BF (she does this every once in a while if she drinks too fast in the morning).  She did not eat again after that before her appointment.  She also had several poopy diapers yesterday, so her stomach was definitely pretty emtpy at this appointment.  I just don't want to go back for her weight check next month and the doctor tell me that I need to start supplementing.  I do not feel like I have supply issues.  She seems satisfied when she finishes and often pushes me away now.  I'm not even sure if she would take a bottle after I feed her.  She has never really comfort eaten, so I don't think she will take any more if she is actually full.

  • My daughter was in the 90% for weight and 75% for height at her 6 month checkup.  She just turned 2 and is 22% weight and 3% for height.  She's growing (slowly), talking, hitting physical milestones--who am I to say how big she should be?

  • Thanks everyone. I feel better now.

That doesn't sound like an issue to me either. DD was about 55% at her 2 week appt and is around 10% at 15 months. Her doctors aren't concerned at all cause she is happy, healthy, developing normally, and both DH and I are little. I've never had supply issues and DD eats like a pig on solids now. She just has a fast metabolism like I do. She hovered right around the 25-30% from about 6 months to about 1 year old and then dropped again. Its kinda funny cause she has still has a pot belly and chunky thighs, she's just overall little. Her pedi had told me that she doesn't get too concerned with drops on the growth chart for height/weight as much as she does for head circumference. She said a drop in percentiles for head circumference is a better indicator of malnutrition. DD's poor little head has been hovering right around 65% since birth... :P

That's interesting. I've never heard that about head circumference. DD's has remained around 45%.
