This is Real

I was perusing People and saw THIS article about a family that was held hostage by their large cat. The 911 call is embedded in the article and I laughed even though I shouldn't.

  • "The cat has a history of violence." I like that part. Oh, and I laughed too, so don't feel too bad.

  • Right??? What is the history or violence? So many unanswered questions! Plus, they didn't have the cat removed, just caught. Then they kept it there even though it was holding a family of three hostage?!?!? I'd probably elect to have the animal removed from my home.

  • I heard on the news they plan on treating the cat with medication and therapy *face palm*
  • Um, I totally own a cat who is capable of this. She's the devil but we love her anyway. Luckily she only attacks me and has never hurt our son. I get my exercise by running back to bed from the bathroom in the middle of the night because she likes to chase me.

  • I'm sorry but 22 pounds?? The cat in that photo did not look huge... my cat is ginormous (she is a large breed) and she only weighs 17 pounds. Exaggerate much? Or else put that fat cat on a diet.

Yeah I was expecting a mainecoon or something. But I was unclear if their size was the reason for the intimidation or just a temperament issue, LOL.

Haha.. I don't even know what to say.. Must have been a super frightening situation(sarcasm). Seriously though, if an animal harmed my child the animal would be gone. End of story.
Yes, safety of humans over pets.

It's funny, but also sad because I can totally relate.  When I was 9 months pregnant with DS, my cat attacked the shit out of me: black eye, stitches in my scalp, scratches everywhere. I spent the next seven months (until he died) living in fear of him because I couldn't really ever trust him.  I couldn't take him to a shelter because he was unadoptable (history of violence and a preexisting heart problem) and despite the fact that he was an asshole, I still loved him and didn't want him to be put down.

  • My husband read this yesterday and I peed my pants.
  • I know someone who has owned more than one 20+ pound cat.  It's a combination of having a larger cat to start with, feeding it what you shouldn't, and keeping it indoors (her outdoor cat is just large, not giant).  DH's former roommate had a cat who could totally do this!  I like animals, but I used to avoid that one.

  • If you are afraid of your cat it's time for the cat to go! Especially if it hurt the child! My ex had a mean cat and I used to walk around the apartment with a spray bottle! It's no way to live!
  • Wow.

Dude!  Domestic cat violence is never okay.  I laughed so hard my belly hurt a little.

I agree a cat like that should probably not be in a home with young children.

However, apparently the baby had been pulling the cat's tail first. So, I have to say, I can understand why the cat reacted like this. Too much instinct to overcome. Even my harmless cats (who put up with literally everything) might react that way if they were hurt.

Check out the below link for the perspective of Animal Planet's cat whisperer :)

ETA: I forgot to also add the detail where the person kicked the cat before they ran to the bathroom...

  • I read that he kicked the cat away AFTER it scratched his kid and while he was trying to flee to the other room. If that was the case, I don't blame him for kicking it. Clearly they love their animal if they've kept it around despite multiple issues, right?

I'm probably the wrong one to weight in on this though because I have zero tolerance for animal violence. I love animals and own them but they know their place and I know mine.

My ex had a cat that was a complete asshole. Come to think of it, she was a complete asshole too. Of course, it disappeared (finally) the week before I dumped her. Go figure. Nocturnal bastard woke me up every night for hours for 3 years!
  • Oh my gosh, I live in the Portland area....seriously this story is all over news, radio, everywhere. And they keep having follow up stories about it too! It's hilarious, but I had no idea that it went so viral all the way to People :)
  • DH use to have a cat that would wait for me to fall asleep then she would jump and claw my pillow right by my face. She would climb the kitchen cabinets and wait for me to walk by then jump off and attack me. When I was pregnant it got worse, I refused to let her live there and harm me while I was pregnant. We sent her to in laws house, I did not trust her around DS. I use to love cats not anymore!
