I finally made my first diaper!! ETA: pics of a baby in it!

edited March 2014 in May 2014 Moms
Huge AW here but I'm so giddy about finishing my first diaper! It's not perfect but I can't wait to have the time to sit down and make a few more to try to remedy a few of my error. LO is still sleeping so I will have to wait to put it on him. It's a pocket so I hope some of my other pocket inserts fit it since I haven't taken the time to make any inserts yet.

ETA: For reference he was a little over 24 lbs and 30" at his one year check up in January. I'm guessing he is probably pretty close to 25 lbs at 14 months. The pattern says it should fit a newborn but we shall see in a couple of months!

  • It looks wonderful! Let us know how it fits and if it leeks. I've been debating on making my own.
  • Kudos to you! I do NOT possess the talent to do something like that!

    3 hours and zero leaks! I'm calling it a success! Just make sure that you use 100% polyester thread and any pinning is done on the outside of where you sew since any punctures would cause a potential for leaking. The pattern I followed was pretty easy!

  • Great job! Which pattern did you use? So far I've only finished one newborn cover. I'm hoping to at least try a fitted and a pocket before LO arrives....we'll see of that happens. Momma needing Naps and early bedtimes make it tough to get much done with a toddler running around!

  • It looks great! As long as it doesn't leak I'd call it a success! That's always been my standard.  :D
    I've been on a diaper sewing kick this last week and finally got some new diapers sewn up for my son too.

    @cknma I used this pattern: https://www.mammacandoit.com/One-Size-Diaper-Pattern.html

    @ABColeslaw‌ I think I had a total of $70 but that includes the $20 pliers to do the snaps, 1 yard of both the pul and the microfleece inner as well as a fee other materials to make inserts out of. I estimated that it probably costs around $5-10 to make one diaper. I'm going to make a few more, look at what material I have left and really try to figure it up better on my next fabric order.

    5-10 bucks a dipe...not bad

  • The pattern I used shows how to get 5-6 dipes per yard of material. I paid 7.95 for the microfleece (inside material) and $6.95 for a yard of the PUL. MF terry (for inserts) was $12.95 for a yard, not sure how many inserts that will make. Also ordered some zorb for $7.90 for a yard to use in inserts. I'm just kinda playing to figure out what works best on inserts. The elastic was maybe $3-4 and I didn't use hardly any if it and the snaps were $1.39 for 100 snaps and I only needed 33 of those. That takes the shell (estimating very conservatively that I only get 4 per yard instead of 5 or 6) to being around $5.12 but I need to make inserts to figure out which materials I want/need and how many I can make per yard.

  • If you have any prefolds laying around those are what I use for inserts in my diapers. I played around with everything under the sun trying to make inserts that I didn't hate. And finally just started using the prefolds DS has grown out of. I never had good luck making mine, it seemed like they just sucked no matter what.

  • That looks so good! Was it hard doing the snaps? Do you just pinch them together with the pliers?

    Funny story about the snaps. I told my husband that I didn't understand why but the first time I would do it it messed up the second time it would be fine. Every single snap was like this. He was like did it come with an all (aul? I have no clue how to spell it) and I was like a what? He asked if it had a sharp pointy thing and I was like yeah right here! He told me to poke the material with that first and then try it. Instantly better. I never thought my husband would be the one to help me with sewing projects! I think it took maybe 10-15 minutes to do all of the snaps after he explained that to me. I had the pliers.

    Also, I used the Kam brand snaps. I've heard they are better quality than babyville.
