Anyone interested in a plus-size check in?

I figured we could check-in once a week to see how we're all doing with weight gain, finding maternity clothes that actually fit, and just general support. I know it's kind of a different experience for us curvy gals...we don't get to show off that cute little bump early on and maternity clothes can be ill-fitting and downright ugly.

What do you think? Who's in?

  • I'm in!  DH and I are going out tomorrow to do some pre-shopping (all the good stores are an hour away, so I'm gonna go try stuff on, see what I like and then probably shop online when I really need it).  At the moment I am more concerned with getting some pants, all of mine are starting to get tight.  We've been eating a lot of pizza 'cause that's the only thing that has consistently sounded good over the last two months :(  Not the best choice but I'm miserable and pizza makes me happy apparently.

Any stores I shouldn't bother with?

  • @softsoprano‌ I had luck at Macy's. Old Navy has some stuff...but the maternity section at my local store is really small...like one rack, so I'll order online from there. Target was ok for me, but not the best
Don't bother with the sale at Babies r Us...their XL won't fit me...I'm a 16/18 depending on the fit

Thanks!  I hadn't thought of Macy's for some reason.  Our Old Navy had almost nothing for maternity last I checked, so I'm not going to bother.  What about JC Penny?  When I searched online I liked a lot of what I saw (but does it actually fit the way it's supposed to?)

I ordered jeans from pennys last time and they ran a little big but so worth it! Good quality and fabric they lasted me the whole pregnancy and after. I will wear them again once I find them( oops somewhere packed away). Their shirts also fit me well I'm a 3X and they were true to size.
Thanks, that's good to hear.  We're primarily going out so I can try on different pants and figure out what panel configuration I will actually like.  I would think full panel would be best, you can just wear it throughout the pregnancy, but after talking to people it sounds like everyone has differing options on what they liked wearing... so I'm off to figure that out for myself :)

I'm very self conscience so it made a world of difference for me.

I'm in the same boat. I have a belly already and honestly when I tried the underbelly pants, they were way less comfortable

  • I got some maternity jeans that I am loving at Burlington coat factory this weekend. They also had some affordable shirts at great prices.

I found with my sin the skirts that have the roushing? Down the side helped me look more pregnant and less blah/huge.

    Me too - only I'm only 5'5". Wish I was 5'11"!

So far I have gained probably 10 pounds. It's hard to discern as there was holiday weight gain that happened before I got a BFP, and I don't know how much exactly. I stopped weighing myself after my wedding day, lol. :D

I am down a few lbs.  Im actually looking to not gain much during this pregnancy.  Im watching carbs and sugars to try and escape possible gest. diabetes.  Luckily also for me, unlike a lot of ladies Ive been seeing who have been starving etc.  Ive been so full after eating a small meal that I feel like Im almost eating LESS then I was previously.

Ive also been wondering if Ive gotten any more baby belly.  Hard to tell whats just fat haha.

Have any of you had luck with your dr finding your baby's HB on doppler?  We are going on Thursday and she is going to try for it, but she did say that sometimes its too early. (Ill be just at 12 weeks)  Im worried because I have some extra belly fat that its going to make it harder for her to get the baby on doppler.

  • I'm totally down for this. Pregnancy is freaking me out and I felt better when I was reading about other plus size women and what was going on with them (I was size 16/18 in most jeans pre-pregnancy).  I'm officially down 12 pounds.  My midwife only wants me to gain 10-15 this pregnancy, and so far that doesn't look like a problem. They also said that as long as I wasn't starving they weren't going to be worried about weight loss unless it continued into mid second trimester since if I got serious about a healthy diet suddenly it might sort of fall off naturally. I officially can't wear my fattest pair of jeans because they are too tight despite the weight loss so today I picked up a couple of belly bands to hold my pants up. My next appointment is in 7 days, so fx everything still looks good.

  • I love this post.  I am a 16/18 pre-pregnancy.  Luckily I haven't needed maternity clothes yet.  I am down 3 pounds so my belly is bigger but my clothes still fit.  I live in the Northeast and am holding out for spring.  I want to buy warm weather maternity clothes!

I am 5'4 about 215lbs pre pregnancy and my Dr found the hb with the doppler super easily Monday.
  • I'd love to start having this check in again.

I'm down about 15 lbs since getting pregnant. I've had very little appetite until just recently that contributed to weight loss. I'm a 16/18 and all my regular clothes still fit. I had some bloat last weekend that made them tighter for a bit. Then it went away. I've started looking into maternity wear, though, because I know it's only a matter of time before I will need it.

I had an appt yesterday at 12w4d, and they found the heartbeat on the doppler. Took her a couple minutes, but she found our little peanut. I was worried my weight would hinder things, but from what I've read on here and heard from people in person, they can usually still find it around 12 weeks.

  • At my first OB appt, it took her a bit to find the hb...but I do have an anterior placenta. The doc found it right after she found the placental hb

I've lost 13lbs so far...not trying to or anything, just no appetite. I'm hoping to check out Motherhood Maternity in the near future but my clothes are still fitting okay.

I have an appointment Monday and hoping we'll get to hear the heartbeat...really worried we won't be able to find it..

I went from 200 to 240 with my first pregnancy and was then at 170 pre-pregnancy this time, but am still considered overweight. I think I've gained 8lbs so far and am barely able to zip my regular size 12 pants!

We heard ours at 12 weeks. She had to move around for about 5 minutes until she got to my left side - which is where he is ALWAYS hiding! But she found it no prob.

  • I'll join!

With DD they were able to find the HB as early as 12 weeks if I am remembering correctly.  I know they never had a problem finding it.

I actually lost weight with DD and am hoping that is the same this time around.  At my first appt I had lost 5lbs.

I bought most of my mat clothes at thrift stores or consignment sales but most were old navy, Motherhood maternity, and gap believe it or not.  I had two pairs of Gap capris in size 20 that were awesome.  If you are on a budget, second hand is the way to go because most stuff was worn for maybe only 6 months and I found lots of things that were brand new too.
I know it's not something to "aim for" but I'm pretty disappointed I didn't lose a thing. Everyone I talk to says they lost a lot of weight and then gained. I have done nothing but gain the whole time and it's pretty disheartening. :( I know that sounds stupid but I've worked really hard to keep my weight at a specific point, so it's a real bummer to see it keep climbing like crazy and knowing I can't do anything about it. Maybe I'll plateau this trimester. :D

  • Hey all!! I'm new to TB and so glad I found this thread! I'm due September 19. So far I have gained 3 pounds this pregnancy, which I know is normal however before becomg PG I was actively losing weight and had just lost 12 pounds. So seeing the scale go the other way is a bit disheartening :-( I normally wear a 14/16.

I was also actively losing weight before I got pregnant and have lost more with pregnancy but my NP isn't really glad about it. She'd like for me to maintain and slowly gain throughout the 2nd and 3rd tris. 3 lbs isn't bad at all but I totally understand the bummer of seeing the scale go up.

Also, we have the same due date! :)

I'm struggling with the fact that I've gained a little already. I'm about a size 20 and 5"2'. I also felt like I was showing a little more at this point last pregnancy, so that's disheartening. I'm doing well with excercise though. Yoga, and a stroller fitness class once a week, and tonight I start prenatal water aerobics.

  • Yes! Let's keep this up!

Size 16 pre pregnancy. I got target maternity jeans and I'm in love, but I had to hem them. I might try old Navy next since I need a short option. I'm 5', I hate cutting 4 inches off my pants! I tried on a cute maternity dress but I felt like I was wearing a moomoo. Maybe it'll look and feel better when I'm rocking a bump. I have a few empire waist dresses that I'm sure will be fine with a small bump.

Ftm, 13 weeks and I feel like I've already got a bump. The top is harder than normal, it's usually flatter there and some pudge at the bottom. Maybe because I'm short and short waisted there's no where for things to move but out. Everyone knows I'm pregnant now, so I don't care anymore. Fat, Blump or bump... Its there.

I was having the exact opposite problem.  I tried on a few dresses last night because I want to transition to dresses for the summer and they were so short!!! I felt like I was wearing a shirt. Ha! I'm totally going to have to stick to maxi dresses only. I'm 5'9" so my pants are never long enough for me.  I'm trying to find some talls and keep running into average or petite length. So let me know if you see any talls out there, ok?

    ----
Haha how about we buy the same things and I'll send you the foot of fabric I have to hem off so you can make yours longer!

The dress was so long for a short dress! I was so mad. And it was like a tent. I did not feel cute.

  • Hey all!  New to this group, but happy that you are all here for support.
I'm generally a 12/14 pre-maternity, still fitting into all my clothes, but I'm also a bit early (12 weeks tomorrow).  My OB also told me to try and maintain my current weight for the 1st Tri and then slowly gain for the 2nd and 3rd.

My big concern is that I've had absolutely NO energy to work out.  I've been trying to force myself to walk and hoping that gets more frequent as the weather gets nicer (I'm in NY).  But, no joke, all I want to do is SLEEP.  Thankfully, haven't been gaining despite the lack of movement - thankful that all this baby seems to want to eat are raw vegetables.  I feel like a total weirdo!
  • I just did a little shopping at Old Navy.  Got a pair of black pants for work and some t-shirts.  I bought some regular tank tops for underneath because they were a little thin.  I am not really showing, just starting to get a little thicker around the middle but it is mostly fat.

I looked at Motherhood Maternity at Macy's but the fabric just hung off over roll I have. And everything was fitted around the chest and was too small. Overall everything made me look fat and sloppy, not pregnant.  The largest they went up to was XL but their website says they go up to 3X so maybe a different location would have it.

  • @ciardasully if you can go to a motherhood maternity store they will have larger sizes.  I have found with old navy the panels are very stretchy and I am suffering from saggy crotch by the end of the day.  I found motherhood maternity fits much better and holds up better then old navy.    I was an 18 prepregnancy and fluctuate within a five pound range.
