BF and teeth

DS has decided to slowllllly release my nipple as he partially holds it with his teeth! It's like he's trying to see how far it can stretch. I've managed to avoid much purposeful biting because he only does that when he's bored. However, when he's nursing at night and falling asleep, he starts almost chewing them. I don't want to be too dramatic in my response because I want him to go to bed, not wake up and cry! Any suggestions?

Re: BF and teeth

  • If my daughter bites me at night time i just quietly say no biting and unlatch her and she immediately latches back on, if she bites again I unlatch and let her relatch again. It usually only takes one or two times of this for her to stop biting me.  Hope this helps!

  • I wish I could help. There have been nights that I have come close to just giving a bottle and pumping because R won't stop biting me. It's SO frustrating... I get really upset. When I unlatch him, he immediately starts screaming and crying. I have gotten to the point where I do what @keturag said a few times (take him off, change sides, re-latch), and it he does it more than a couple times, I just stop nursing and assume he's had enough.

If I were still nursing, this would be my reaction.  NO way would I put my nipples through that.

  • Yeah, I definitely won't be pumping any more than necessary. I cut out one session, and I'm working my way off my second one; then I will only have one more to cut out. I'm hoping this is just a very short phase! I also figured out that his biting is what is making pumping painful - I didn't put them together right away.

  • I'd just keep sticking your finger in his mouth to break the latch. If he fusses, let him relatch. Continue that until he stops biting or falls asleep. That's what I do when DD3 keeps almost pulling off as she falls asleep. There's nothing quite like the very tip of your nipple being pulled back in when LO realizes she accidentally let go. Ouch.

  • This is why we stopped nursing. I always had a slow letdown anyway, so when she got teeth she started biting HARD every.single.time to the point where I couldn't even let down anymore because I was so tense. I hope it works out for you!

  • My DD was doing the same thing and it was awful! What really worked for me was, as soon as I felt her start to pull off (dragging my nipple with her) I would gently press her head in to my boob, which made her automatically release the bite. I had to repeat this several times, but eventually she figured it out.

  • Thanks everyone. I kind of pushed him in a little when he started tonight, and that helped!
