XP: When did you start 3 solid meals/day and how much?

I am still clueless about all of the solid feeding things.  Right now the boys are eating two solids a day.

We give them oatmeal (4tbsp-the LOVE it) in the morning and we give them a veggie in the late afternoon evening.

I actually have not yet started fruits but are planning to start bananas today.  I am thinking maybe they are ready for 3 meals, but not sure if they are, and not sure when the norm to start 3 is.

So, do you think I should do banana and cereal in the morning, or do I do cereal in the morning, banana in the afternoon and veggie in the evening?  My pedi never really seems to have an opinion on these things and I have no clue what I am doing.

Thanks

  • I think Miranda was about 8-9 months when we started 3 meals a day. We had done the 3 day wait rule with new foods with all fruits and veggies by then - I think I was just nervous about trying all the new foods, so I kept it to 2 meals (cereal in the morning and fruit or veggie for dinner) till we had made it through all cereal, veggies, fruit and meats. DD loves yogurt, so we added yogurt (mixed with fruit or veggie puree) as 'lunch' when we started.

  • DS started on 3 solids a day at about 6 months old. That was mainly because day care kept insisting that he needed more food during the day. But it worked out well. He would get 4 8 ounces bottles a day (he wouldnt always finish them) and get oatmeal in the morning, fruit for lunch and veggie at dinner. It worked out that he was eating about every 2-3 hours rotating between a bottle and then solids.
  • We had troubles getting enough formula into Katen so she switched to three meals a day at mos and transitioned fully to food with formula on the side and two snacks at one year.

1/4 cup is generally a serving and you can usually give them 2-3 foods (a protein, a fruit, a veggies, a starch...) at a time to make a meal.

    For example today we're doing:

Breakfast: waffle, banana, yogurt bites, milk/formula

snack: leftover waffle and/oror blueberries, milk/formula or water

Lunch: peas and carrots, cheese and black bean quesadilla, applesauce, milk/formula

snack: puffs or string cheese or yogurt, milk/formula or water

Dinner: whatever we're having as long as she's not allergic, milk/formula
