Sterile water injections for labor pain?

I was reading a few natural labor and getting sterile water injections for labor pain was mentioned as a way to reduce pain with medication. Does anyone have any experience with this? Is it something that would be common for me to request in the hospital?

Re: Sterile water injections for labor pain?

  • I had this with my second drug free birth. My MW suggested it prior to labour. The premise is that water is injected around nerves running through the sacrum blocking the pain signals. However, the pain during the injections was worse than any contraction and I did not feel that it worked well as other pain management techniques (movement, counter pressure and breathing).

  • I have yet to read a story of women who did them who would do them again.  Everything I've read women say they work, but the pain of the injections was worse than labor.
