Pumped breastmilk

I pumped yesterday around 2 p.m., and after I was finished I put it in the fridge. Around 7 p.m., I took it out and put it in a bowl of warm water to get the temp up. I promptly forgot about it and eventually put it back in the fridge. I took it out again this morning to use and once again forgot about it. Should I just dump it out? I really don't want to make DS sick? What are you all's thoughts on this?

Re: Pumped breastmilk

  • I'd probably dump it since you warmed it up. BM is good at room temp for five hours- sounds like it might be pushing that? Sorry, that sucks. I dumped 4 oz yesterday b/c LO didn't want to take a bottle at the birthday party we were at. :(

  • Thanks! I was on kellymom.com yesterday, but not looking for that answer.. I swear my brain is out to lunch these days. I will need to do some more reading and research since this is my first real experience with pumping. I had stopped BF with my first DS at this point in the game, and have been trying to nurse and pump with DS2. My ticker doesn't show, but DS2 is about 5 weeks old.
Breast milk that has been previously refrigerated and then warmed to room temp for over an hour can be considered suspect due to potential bacterial growth, though some will say it can go 3-4 hours. Never refrigerate it again, though. (However, fresh pumped milk can be left at room temp for 4-7 hours, so you could have left the 2pm pumping out and fed it at 7, most likely.) Kellymom.com is an excellent resource, as is the La Leche League website. Please read them so that you know the safety standards.

    ...this sounds a little condescending.
Point well taken--it does. I think my (admittedly snarky) tone was less based in the question itself and more in the OP's history (41 discussions, 53 replies) and the fact that versions of this question have come up and been responded to several times in recent days.
I'm sorry that I don't have much of a history of posting on the board. I mostly lurk and read what others have to say, and don't reply because it would get repetitive to add my two cents when it was already said by someone else. Since I lurk mostly on mobile and only get on the computer to post, I don't really know how to search. Dumb, I know, but I guess I will go check out the search function. Sorry to offend..
  • NEVER heat BM more than once, and once its out of the fridge it shouldn't go back. Diapers are bad enough without a LO suffering from food poisoning :)

This isn't necessarily true. There really are no studies done on the subject.

I've def reheated BM (no more than twice) with my kids, with no food poisoning issues.

My LCs actually tell women not to throw out leftover breast milk as long as it's used at the next feeding (within a couple hours). They're very clear that leftover formula needs to be pitched, but breast milk has a little more flexibility.

We're going through more than 60 oz a day between the two boys - that's a lot of milk to produce, so if we have an ounce or two left from a bottle feeding we're keeping it and following our clinic's recommendations.

In the case of the OP I'd toss it, though. I wouldn't feel comfortable pushing it that far.

Maybe stricter in UK? They made me dump 4oz at the hospital as had been heated and then LO decided to BF for once and then wouldn't take the bottle

  • I keep it.  Day care wouldn't, though.  The bottle he drank this morning of milk pumped on Friday or Saturday  still had 1.5 oz in it and I stuck it back in the refrigerator to finish off after work. (I pump while getting ready and give him a bottle in the mornings so it's quicker, he can nurse 30-60 minutes when he wants to, but he's done with his bottle in 15.)

If he didn't finish it on the second time around, then I'd dump it.
