Let's talk granny panties

A lot of you ladies have recommended getting some granny panties for recovery. I'm looking for some recommendations. Are we talking full-on up to the belly button granny panties (GPs from here on out)? Or more of a regular brief?

Also, any particular brands that are more comfy than others? I get that you want these to basically be "disposable" due to bleeding, etc, but I find the 6-pack, cheapo, cotton, bikini style undies I've tried to be weird feeling (strange elastic, odd leg holes, etc.). I'm not looking to be stylish or foxy in my GPs and overnight strength pad, I just want to feel okay in them and not waste my time and money on something I'm just going to chuck in the trash.

On a similar note: how many pairs of the magical mesh panties do they send you home from the hospital with?

I just bought cheap Hanes from Walmart in a size up and I hung onto them and have worn them in late pregnancy (like right now) and PP.

ETA - just a full coverage

  • I didn't get the high rise ones, just the regular granny panties. Idk if I would call them granny panties as to just ugly panties. But I got 2 packs of 6 I think that should be more then enough for post partum
  • I didn't get any special ones last time- just wore the full butt ones I already had. The overnight pads only take up so much space, and I never bled on anything but the pad.

  • I bought a few extra packs of these, which I typically wear to sleep in: https://www.jockey.com/catalog/product/jockey-womens-elance-string-bikini

They are very full coverage and extremely comfortable and I've always considered them "granny panties" but I guess comparatively they aren't really.
  • A little tip for c section mamas. A nurse told me to make underwear more comfortable on the incision to put a pad (regular feminine pad) between your stomach and the underwear. It worked wonderfully.

This! I also took home tons of mesh panties and ended up throwing them out. If you have a c/s and need higher ones you can beg for more mesh ones for home and then send someone to target or amazon prime the higher rise ones.

I am enjoying my full butt maternity panties from Motherhood though and plan to use them a lot pp as well. The top can be worn high or folded down.

  • I brought a size up and got two packages of 6 or 8 Hanes @ Walmart. I think they were full coverage or something. Comfy but not my VS panties for sure! They'll have to do until I can wear my VS again.
  • A friend of mine told me not to bother buying any granny panties. She used Depends (I think!) and has given me what she didn't use. They look like pull up diapers!! Should be interesting!

I personally hate panties that go up to my belly button so I'll be getting hip huggers. The whole point is to make you feel more comfortable during recovery.

  • I got some Hanes briefs. Not very pretty but eh, they will have to do.
  • I just bought a 6-pack of bikini briefs one size up (I think fruit of the loom) at Target for about $9.  I thought about the high waist ones but I hate those.

  • I got a few granny panties since i was a scheduled c/s but I ended up not wearing them. Went from the mesh ones from hospital to men's boxer briefs which were super comfy.
This time around I'm planning a vbac but I haven't even thought about this or pads. Ill see what the hospital gives me and what I think I need and I'll just  go out (or send Dh out) to buy something if I need it.

Just get regular panties or even boy shorts will work. Panties don't need to be high rise. Whatever you might be comfortable in get. :)
  • I bought 10 pairs of extra large size full bottom panties from Nordstrom (juniors department). They are cute, dark colors and have fun lace. They were on sale for $1.99 a pair.

They are practical, but don't make me feel frumpy. I don't care if they get ruined because they were so cheap.
  • I never bought new granny panties? I just used my old hip huggers and full bottom panties (just as long as a GIANT pad can fit in them) i think any will do. I do not like the feel of things on my belly so normal low rise panties worked for me. I didn't care that I was going to throw them away cuz it gave me a great excuse to get new cute sexy undies after recovery!

As for the mesh panties i took home a ton!!!! My hospital gave me as many as I wanted.
  • I got a cheep 6 pack of full bottom cotton bikinis from Walmart in a size up. I will be having a RSC but the high waist is not needed, they make the incision pretty low.
  • I'm not buying any special underwear.  It seems a little ridiculous to spend money on something that I intend to just throw out.
  • I bought the Hanes underwear from Wal-Mart too.  I have been wearing them for a couple of months.  They are comfy, but I hate undressing and DH seeing.  I am a little embarrassed.  I know that's silly.  I actually got teary eyed as I was folding the underwear and putting in my drawers when I saw my old, cute underwear.  I miss them.  LOL
