I think so. I know at least 4 Jameses (Jims) that are my age, plus it was an old co-worker's name, my mom's old boss, my dad's middle name... I could go on. I don't know any little Jameses, but I don't know that many kids either.
That said, I think it's a good name. I love Jimmy or Jamie for a little boy's nickname.
I have a cousin my age (39) named James and know a lot of older men named James.
I didn't know that the name had grown in popularity again. I haven't heard of any little boys named James yet in my circle of friends.
TTC #1 for over 5 years - too many to count IF treatments (tried everything and anything), repeat miscarriages.
Finally, Sticky Success!! B/G Twins arrived 2011.
A lot of the more traditional names are getting spotlighted these days (Jacob, Benjamin, etc.) and with good reason- they are strong, excellent names and parents are fighting back against the Aydysyns and Boustyns of today. I think James falls right in that category.
I don't know any little boys named James but I do know three Jameson's and a few Jamie's. That being said, if I have a boy it is going to be a James named after DH and he will go by James not Jamie or Jim. I think it's a great, classic name!
I don't think Social Security is lying to you about the name's popularity....
You could check one of the many sites that shows how popular it is in each state. ?Maybe you don't live in big James state, or maybe you just don't happen to know many. I would trust statistics over personal experience.
I have a friend whose son is James, and they have so far avoided nicknames (but he's 3). ?My cousin went from Jamie to Jimmy to Jim.?
Re: Is James actually as popular as the lists suggest?

you can look up popularity by state, year, etc- this is not a "made up" list- it's from social security.
