Recommended parenting books

I have a ton of downtime coming up in the next couple of weeks, since I'm moving, and in the Army, that means outprocessing, which is like the world's least efficient and most painful scavenger hunt of signatures and paperwork (making sure you are cleared to leave post and don't owe money, library books, etc. etc).

I have heard moms say that they wished they had spent less time during pregnancy reading about pregnancy and more time reading about what happens after the kid arrives.  Do you have any recommendations for books that you thought were really beneficial?  I just started the La Leche book The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding (maybe a little extreme, but seems like good info).  Yesterday on the radio I heard an interview with the author of The Happiest Baby series, and he seemed reasonable, so I thought I might look into those.  Mostly trying to stay away from the crazies...

Happiest Baby on the Block. Although I have to admit I never actually read it, I watched the movie. But the advice was amazing and worked really really well with DD. So I would recommend it.

  • I liked and found the BFing book I read helpful (The Nursing Mother's Companion). The Happiest Baby was good, and useful later. I loved the Wonder Weeks book, but mostly as we were in the middle of all those milestones. I also liked reading about parenting in different cultures (How Eskimos Keep Their Babies Warm). I later enjoyed reading some introductions to sign language and a book on Baby-led Weaning, but I didn't pick those up until DD was ~5 months old.
  • A good basic book that answered tons of my FTM and feeding questions was 'Caring for your baby and Young Child, Birth to Age 5'. It's written by the American Academy of Pediatrics and helped immensely during the first year. I still use it as a reference for DS as he gets older.

  • I just got bringing up bebe too!! One of my friends recommend and I think is very interesting I strongly recommend it.
  • Baby 411 was awesome! It was a lifesaver for me with DD! It's written by a pediatrician but has very realistic advice and is easy to read.

  • Happiest Baby on the Block saved our lives. Another book with great advice was The No-Cry Sleep Solution. I also really enjoyed Parenting Without Borders; it gives wonderful perspective on other parenting techniques around the world.
