hair tourniquet

So my LO had one on the little toes..

I FREAKED out.  When i noticed it i had an appt with the pedi that day so i waited to address it when i went in.

Pedi proceeded to cut the hair and use tweezers (lo was crying and then i started crying it was HORRIBLE). Anyways the advice he gave me was to use Nair to remove one if it happened in the future. Does anyone else think that advice was not right?

Im thinking of getting a new pedi because of this. Overboard?

ya i probably am but that advice really pissed me off.

BTW thanks ladies for the sympathies for my LO going through something so painful and horrible. (i dont know what the sarcasm font is for the group)

Maybe you should show some couth on a post about a child being in pain.
  • Yup. You should totes do that.
Be sure to call CPS on yourself when you're done.

maybe you should read, i asked if anyone else thought this was bad advice for one.

for 2 i asked if it was overboard i wanted a new pedi for giving said advice.

  • FFS this really fucking happened.

This isnt some crazy HOT TOPIC or controversial thing.  And i cant get advice on a serious matter because you all think im a troll.

    Awesome.

Even if you are not a troll you most likely wouldn't be getting good advice due to the way you started on this board. You want respect? You need to give it and definitely not attack the regs with rude tude.
  • Why didn't you remove the hair yourself?

    This was my initial thought.
  • i should have taken a picture it was wrapped waaay to tightly, everytime i touched her foot she would scream and kick around..... (i dont know why my shit is underlined and it wont let me stop it)  My DH wasnt around to hold her down for me, it was def a 2 person job...

  • Well how does this happen?

    Me three.

"A bookshelf fell on my baby so we went to the pediatrican to have it taken off, feel bad for meeeee!" LOL

  • Yea, never heard of it. Good to know! I guess I better start checking. It just seems like you would see it before it got bad idk
  • Well how does this happen?
i asked him that, he told me to check her socks and footie jammies before i put them on her.  Hair can be in those places from doing laundry.  Then because she scrunchies her toes and moves them around it gets tighter and tighter over a period of time.  I almost didnt even see the hair is was so tight.. I had to push back her skin.  I have no idea how long it was like that.

He also told me its not uncommon and if someone brings a baby thats unconsolable to the ER thats the first thing they check for...

  • I'm gonna rub nair on DS feet every night
  • This actually is a thing that happens, not just to babies either. I  had a friend in college who went to see the doctor because her toe hurt and she didn't know why. It had a hair wrapped around it. Granted she was physically disabled and so she couldn't get close enough to her toe to inspect it, but still. It does happen.

    Me too!

  • I check all of Ks fingers, toes and his junk during every change for exactly this reason. Why would you not check? And why you waited is just stupid. You should' ve removed it yourself. Stop being a baby and go away.

Please dont try and use scissors and your baby why they are kicking and wailing unless you have someone to hold LO down. Obviously this has never happened to most of you or you would understand that its a 2 person job to take care of. I said my DH wasnt around so i went into the pedi THE SAME DAY.  And I had never heard of this happening before that is the reason i didnt check.

And btw you must be newish. Dont recognize your nickname, stop trying to fit in by acting like a bitch when it isnt necessary. (btw thats not flag worthy because i didnt actually call you a bitch)
  • Do we like your other AE better?

I've heard of it happening on a toe and a penis. Talk about freaking out.

I used to work for a pediatrician and have seen some that were wrapped pretty badly. It was a really good thing the parents didnt try to unravel on their own. It definitely depends on how bad it gets. Maybe OPs LO was bad.
Eta: I really don't know why I am being so nice. Haha ;)
  • This thread makes me want to shave my head.

I kid, but I will definitely be checking LO's fingers & toes now. I never have before and I have long hair.

  • Have to admit. I never heard if this before that's why I thought the whole using nair part was a joke. Definitely going to check LO now. Hope your LO is ok now
  • Well I have 3 kids and it wasn't until this last baby that a hair got wrapped around anything tightly to the point of me kind of panicking. I was home alone and I dealt with it. The time it would take me to even get ready to leave the house and make it to the pedi's office was in my mind to much time to "waste" What I did was let her nurse for a few minutes until she was calm and while she was nursing I used my other hand and removed the hair. It was a few minute job and it was super tight but I was able to do it alone. I see no reason why you couldn't figure out something to do. You could have fed your LO a bottle and rocked him/her to sleep and once asleep and not moving you could have removed it. That still would have taken less time then packing up and going to the pedi's office in my opinion.  I pray you never have a REAL emergency because you have to be able to handle stuff as a parent and sometimes ALONE!!!! Sorry to sound rude but this might be the dumbest thing I have read in quite awhile.

Before you say anything I did read where your baby was screaming/whaling and so was mine. Its all about calming them down.

Why would I flag it? It didn't hurt my feelings. And I wasn't saying to take scissors to your baby that's just silly. But you could've used tweezers to remove the hair while they're asleep, I've had to before on my niece. I'm not new and you could've googled. But I'm glad your LO didn't lose any appendages!

  • Glad your LO is ok. I have never even thought to look for hair around toes. I will be checking more carefully now though

I guess it was bad then I was nursing her the entire time the pedi was removing it and she still kicked and screamed the entire time. So I highly doubt that would gave worked at home for me alone.

But good for you for getting it off on your own. There are a lot of first time mothers who don't appreciate condescending tones, I'm sure you didnt.

This. I never thought about this before. I am definitely going to be checking for this now. And if this happened in his diaper I don't know what I would do. I keep imaging things wrapped so tight they turn purple. It gives me the chills.
  • But back to my question.... This isn't the first time my pedi has given me off advice. But this advice pissed me off about the Nair.

I really wanted her to have the same pedi for life but I'm really thinking about switching... I just dont know if I'm over reacting

  • Btw to all the women who posted rude things. Maybe you shouldn't attack a post about a child in pain.

I can see if I posted my mil is a twat and u all said I deserved it. But not funny.
  • Maybe ours wasn't as severe then. IDK. I guess you did what you thought was right in your situation. Luckily nothing happened to your LO and that is what we should be thankful for.

I wouldn't feel comfortable using Nair, I'll say that. What are some other examples of the weird advice? Might help with the decision.
