Re: ~~~~~March Type 1 Check in~~~~~

  • How far along are you? or how many months TTC or PP? 26 weeks and 4 days pregnant:) I can't believe that my little boy will be here in 3 months!

How have your BS been running lately? How have you been feeling? I had been running higher and higher the last few weeks so we have upped both my basal rates and my meal time boluses, I think the last few days it is finally starting to even out some. I get so stressed when I see high numbers but so far my Dr. keeps telling me I am doing great so that makes me feel better.

Any appointments or A1C updates you would like to share? I don't have my next appointment for 2 more weeks I am curious to see what my A1C is this time since I have had to up my insulin so much.

Any questions for the group? Does anyone have experience with being induced early because they are type 1? I have read conflicting things on google and so I am not sure if that is something I need to worry about or not. I know they induce if baby is too big but what worries me the most are the stories of stillbirth if baby is not induced before the placenta deteriorates.

QTKY: What are you looking forward to the most this month? The end of the month when it should finally start getting warmer, I can't wait for all of this snow to melt.

  • Hi!  Yay!

How far along are you? or how many months TTC or PP?  I just got my BFP this morning - 4 weeks on Tuesday!  Gah!

How have your BS been running lately? How have you been feeling?  I ran kind of high all week last week, but that is pretty typical the week before my period.  I did have 3 nights where I plummeted right before dinner.  I spiked yesterday to 325ish but so far today, I'm around 100 all day.

Any appointments or A1C updates you would like to share?  Need to call tomorrow!

Any questions for the group?  What do you all drink?  I know we need to avoid artificial sweeteners so I'm looking for ideas.

QTKY: What are you looking forward to the most this month?  I guess my first doctor's appointments?  And it becoming more "real".

  • How far along are you? or how many months TTC or PP?  I'm 6 weeks!

How have your BS been running lately? How have you been feeling?  I have been feeling good so far--no real nausea to report, just tired and sleeping more than normal. BS has been fairly stable--my weekly averages the last couple of weeks have been in the 100-115 range.

Any appointments or A1C updates you would like to share?  I had an appointment last week, at 5 weeks, 2 days, where the perinatal group I'm seeing confirmed the pregnancy and did a (super-early) ultrasound. The sac was visible, which is all they expected to see at that point. I go back next Monday for another ultrasound where we should see more, including a heartbeat!

Any questions for the group?  What does everyone's medical "team" look like? I'm seeing my regular OB, a high-risk perinatal group, and still seeing my endocrinologist for management of my T1. I wasn't comfortable with the perinatal group's comfort level with pumps, CGMs, etc. and lobbied my OB to only see them for scans.

QTKY: What are you looking forward to the most this month?  My next appointment to see progress in growth and a heartbeat. Also, a big vacation at the end of this month to
Europe--hoping that morning sickness doesn't kick-in and take over.

@missnacholover Congrats! I'm drinking mostly water and some decaf coffee (occasionally half-caf). Also - my doctors said Splenda is one of the artificial sweeteners that doesn't cross the placenta and was safe.

@babybean82 My doctors told me that as long as everything else goes well, I will be induced at 39 weeks because of possible placenta issues. In their opinion, the cost/benefit analysis after 39 weeks weighs in favor of inducing then.

  • How far along are you? or how many months TTC or PP?  I'm 26w4d, woohoo!

How have your BS been running lately? How have you been feeling?  They are sloooowly starting to creep up.  I've been raising my insulin to carb ratio to try and stay on top of it.

Any appointments or A1C updates you would like to share?  No appointments until the end of March, but my a1Cs have thankfully never been better!

Any questions for the group?  Not right now, happy we have these threads going though.

QTKY: What are you looking forward to the most this month?  Hopefully warmer temperatures outside!!!

@babybean82 I was told 38 weeks by my OB, and 39 weeks by my MFM for induction.  I'm hoping for 39 weeks, but we'll see how I'm feeling by then!
@missnacholover Like PP said, Splenda is fine.  I used to drink one can of Diet Coke a day before being pregnant, but have completely given it up since then.  I used to hate drinking water, but now it is all I want!!!  There are days when I'm so dehydrated, I chug water.  I often put sliced lemons in my water for flavor too.  I do drink one cup of coffee most mornings as well.
@vmt617 I see my endo, OB, and MFM monthly at this point.  Endo for diabetes, OB for regular check ups, and MFM for growth ultrasounds.

How far along are you? or how many months TTC or PP? 37 weeks

How have your BS been running lately? How have you been feeling? More on the low side...too many lows probably....need to fix that ASAP

Any appointments or A1C updates you would like to share? My A1c never got above 5.7 during this whole pregnancy! I saw my endo. about 3 weeks ago, and she didn't want to see me back until 6-8 weeks post-partum

    Any questions for the group?

Meeting my baby!!!!! I'll be induced March 11th!!!!!

My OB was more comfortable doing it closer to 38 rather than 39....She said even with very well controlled diabetes, the placenta can still deteriorate, and that was something we would not even consider risking!

  • Has anyone else experienced any BS spikes during the first trimester? I can run in the 5-7 range and then bam! I will be 17. I am terrified that I am hurting my baby. Any advice?
  • Thanks for the info AMK1981. It makes me feel better knowing someone else is having stuggles. Knowing that you boy is healthy makes me breath a sign of relief too!!
  • I thought of another question for CGM wearers.  When I went for my pre-pregnancy consult, my OB told me not to wear it on my thigh (which is my favorite place) once I am pregnant.  She said something about it increasing risk of clots.  Has anyone heard this?

No but I was going to ask my OB about that on Thursday because I remember you asking it previously. It seems bizarre, but I will run out of real estate fast if I just use my abs. Kim over at TmP used her arms...
I've used my arms before but it doesn't seem as accurate.  Let me know what your OB says!

I just have never had luck on my stomach.  It always freaks out too quickly and just isn't as comfortable.  I need to try the upper ass/back of the hips area.

  • How far along are you? or how many months TTC or PP?
I am 6 weeks and 3 days, or close to that anyway!

How have your BS been running lately? How have you been feeling?
My blood sugar has been running pretty good since I found out.  I've had no insulin resistance, but I've had a couple random highs, including a 220 I caught in the middle of the night last night.  I guess I won't eat hashbrowns with cheese anymore.. :(  I've also been SO tired and I've noticed when my blood sugar drops it makes me so much more tired than usual.  If I have a low anytime after 7pm, count me out for the night!

Any appointments or A1C updates you would like to share?
I had my first appointment this morning with the High Risk OB.  It was LONG, but they said I was doing great with my blood sugar and not to worry about random highs. That made me feel confident!

    Any questions for the group?
Does anyone have any suggestions for food when you have cravings for things you shouldn't eat?  What have you eaten as a substitution? What are some good low carb options?  I'm a food junkie and have already started a list of things I'm going to eat as soon as the baby is born!

QTKY: What are you looking forward to the most this month?
I have my first ultrasound on March 17th, so I'm looking forward to making sure everything is okay!

@babybean82 - My doctor just told me today that they usually induce at 39 weeks because of the risk of still birth.  He said that there is no added benefit for the baby to stay in past that.

@missnacholover - I didn't know about the no artificial sweetener thing!  I've been drinking lots of water (which I never liked before) and an occasional diet caffeine free pop.

@vmt617 - My medical team consists of 2 high risk OBs and a diabetic educator.

@starla487 - For snacks, I usually don't eat a snack until the two hour threshold after a meal passes.  If I want to eat something before then, I eat something without carbs so I don't mess with the readings.  I hope that makes sense.
    BabyFetus Ticker
  • @Heartwood0519 - When I have asked my diabetes Doc about the artificial sweetener thing she said to just limit them.  I can't give up my coffee (I switched to half caf) with flavored SF creamer so I'm trying to just limit the artificial stuff other than that.  I am sure I will be indulging in a diet coke here and there but I really want to try to keep that to a minimum, especially during the first tri.

@starla487 - I'm a side sleeper so that'd be rough for me.  I think my next spot will be upper asscheek.

I'm 13 weeks and several days.
How have your BS been running lately? How have you been feeling?
My blood sugars have been creeping up the last couple days. I had been having a ton of lows but I think I'm going to finally start seeing some insulin resistance.
I've been feeling SOOO much better. My morning sickness is pretty much gone. My energy is better but I still had to go to bed at 8:30 last night.

Any appointments or A1C updates you would like to share?
I have an appointment coming up next week with my OB. After that appointment I think we are finally going to share the news with friends.

Any questions for the group? Nope
QTKY: What are you looking forward to the most this month?
I really want to hear the heartbeat on the doppler. Last appointment my own heartbeat was so loud I could barely hear LO's heartbeat.

@missnacholover - I'm a big Diet Coke drinker and since finding out I've only had one.. a huge victory for me!  But I have had other non caffeinated sodas.  I thought caffeine was the only thing I had to worry about there!  Any recommendations on how much is too much?  Is one caffeine free soda a day too much?

It's not the caffeine, it's the aspartame in diet sodas that they're worried about.  You can have about one cup of caffeinated drinks per day, which is why I have coffee in the morning and gave up Diet Coke.

As far as CGM goes, I've only placed my sensors in my flank regions... didn't even know you could use thighs or arms.  I sleep on my side too, just opposite side that the sensor is in.

  • @missnacholover @starla487 @kks4471 My thigh is the only place I use my CGM. It's the most comfortable and more importantly, most accurate and long-lasting place for me. I'm going to ask my doctors about this next week at my appointment.  @missnacholover did your OB say the CGM added additional risk of clots or do you know if it was just based on regular pregnancy blood clot risks? I'm hoping I don't need to move spots!

She just said because of clots.  I'll get more info when I have an appointment!

I take low dose Tylenol, I know it has a risk of interacting with the dexcom but I just manually check before giving any blouses, and I actually haven't noticed it showing any erroneous highs like they warn you about when I take it.

  • How far along are you? or how many months TTC or PP?
    34 weeks and 1 day.

How have your BS been running lately? How have you been feeling?
I was diagnosed as Type 1 after going into DKA at 20 weeks pregnant. I spent a week in the hospital, and since then, my numbers are mainly between 60 and 140, going over 140 only a few times.

Any appointments or A1C updates you would like to share?
My last (and first!) A1C was 6.4 and that was 2 months after being diagnosed.

    Any questions for the group?
Does anyone know anyone who didn't have very good control over their blood sugar during pregnancy? If so, what was the outcome? I am terrified that high blood sugar during the first half of my pregnancy has or will cause problems or birth defects.

QTKY: What are you looking forward to the most this month?
I guess I am looking forward to the end of the month? :) My son will be born at the beginning of April.

babybean82 - My doctor said I would most likely be induced at 38 weeks, but absolutely no later then 39.

vmt617 - I am seeing a perinatal group that does everything. They have 6 high risk OBs and a diabetic educator.

Thanks for the tips about the pain killers.  I'll have to pick up some tylenol this weekend.

I have another question.  Sorry, I'm new to this whole pregnancy thing!

What does everyone eat for breakfast?  I'm struggling with my after-breakfast BGs.  This morning I had 2 pieces of toast, scrambled eggs, 1/2 caf coffee and shot up to 215.  My highest BG yet but I've been going up to the 160s-180s after bfast so I'm looking for some tips.

I eat within an hour of waking up, wondering if maybe waiting a bit would help too.  I need to make an appointment with a nutritionist.

  • @missnacholover I usually have a homemade decaf latte (5 carbs) with either have an english muffin with frozen turkey sausage (31 carbs) or some kind of Kind bar (17-28 carbs). Another thought--have you tested your morning to mid-morning basal rates lately? I was having issues a few weeks ago after dinner and it ended up being my basal rates, not what I was eating or my carb ratio.

My doctors office just called. My latest a1c was 6.3 (sigh of relief), but they still want me to come in to talk about my bloodwork. Talk about triggering the nerves.
  • @missnacholover I had that same problem but if I waited to eat I would throw up so I have a low fat greek yogurt first thing in the morning no more than 20 carbs, then about 2 hours later I have a second breakfast with more food and that seems to help that jump in blood sugar after breakfast.

  • Thanks for all the suggestions everyone.  My concern with pre-bolusing is if I end up getting nauseous and not finishing my breakfast.  I had a really bad wave of nausea Monday morning, but luckily it's been OK since then.  I'm sure it's coming though.  Definitely something I need to ask the doc about.

@starla487 - that was me yesterday.  I'd spike and then come crashing down and would chill around 70 until it was time to eat again.  Rinse and repeat.  Really want to prevent those jumps in BG!!  This is hard.

However, this morning I had a Whole wheat english muffin with PB and so far I'm 95 and stable.  Yay!  I'm sure I'll be at like, 50, in an hour.

@tpete12 - keep us posted on what the doc says!

  • What have you guys been eating for meals and snacks?  Do you eat the same thing every day because you know it works?  Or are you just eating what sounds good?

I love food and I can't imagine eating the same things over and over for the next 7 months, but should I be?
    BabyFetus Ticker
  • Well, I'm new to all of this but for snacks I've been having almonds, string cheese, hardboiled eggs.  Some carby-snacks too - triscuits, popcorn, etc.  Just bolusing.

My endo and OB did tell me (prior to pregnancy) that routine will be my best friend.  They said that many pregnant T1s eat the same breakfast and lunch every day.  Like you, the thought bores the shit out of me.  I'm going to see a nutritionist at some point so hopefully she can give me at least a few options.

Hi everyone! I just found this thread at 28 weeks and wish I'd stumbled over sooner. I spend most of my time on May '14 and have hardly ventured out to see what else is out here. I'm so glad y'all are doing this and hope I can join in.

I was diagnosed 17 years ago but have never had good control over my BS. My body reacts differently every day. Grr. So I tend to be a bad diabetic. In my mind, if my BS will be bad no matter how hard I try, then why should I bother trying so hard? It's frustrating, and bad, I know.

I wore a pump from 2005-2012 and hated it. Now I'm on MDI of novolog and levemir (2x daily).

How far along are you? or how many months TTC or PP?
    28 weeks, due May 21.

How have your BS been running lately? How have you been feeling?
For the most part, they have been better than ever throughout this pregnancy. In December, I had my lowest A1C ever of 6.6. Lately, they have been really high, especially the last few days, like 200-300+. :( My doc told me yesterday to increase my carb ratio but I don't feel like that's helping. I feel high all the time and I'm really worried about what it's doing to my baby. :(

Any appointments or A1C updates you would like to share?
I have my 30 week US next week and see my endo in 2 weeks. I don't expect my A1C to be nearly as good this time, which I'm disappointed about. But I love my doctor, and I hope that she can help me get this back under control.

    Any questions for the group?
I guess like @JessicaG9289 said, if anyone else has had a lot of trouble with control and if/how it may have affected their baby. LO's heart looked good at the fetal echo and so far, my docs are happy with how he looks overall, but I'm nervous about what they can't predict.

QTKY: What are you looking forward to the most this month?
Hopefully warm weather, plus DH and my first wedding anniversary next weekend. :)

Thanks for doing this, ladies! I look forward to getting to know you guys and being successful together. :)

  • Hello!

We are just now starting to conceive consistently. I am also 13 months PP. My daughter just turned 13 months on Saturday.

My sugars have been doing great! I am trying to lose some weight so sometimes they get low but otherwise great. My last A1C was very good. I was around a 5, I believe.

This month I am pretty boring! Not much to report :)

Congrats to all the upcoming bundles of joy!
  • How far along are you? or how many months TTC or PP?
TTC starting this month- currently in the 2WW...

How have your BS been running lately? How have you been feeling?
They have been ok- A1C has been creeping up the past few times, but I've made more of a conscious effort to keep it on the low side. Had a setback last week when I woke up disoriented. I couldn't speak. One of my co-workers called the house and then 911. They originally said I had a stroke, but that was all negative. Then they said it was a migraine, but it's looking more like I had a seizure (my guess would be due to hypoglycemia). I have to wear an EEG video monitor for three days next week, which will hopefully come back ok. If I have some kind of seizure disorder, then I'm guessing baby #2 will be on hold for at least a while. I never had a problem like this before. My new Dexcom is in the mail- thank God as I lost the dang transmitter off of my old Dex 7 when I was pregnant last year.

Any appointments or A1C updates you would like to share?
My last A1C was 6.8%... I had it down to 5.2% during my last pregnancy.

    Any questions for the group?
Anyone else here have seizures? (either due to hypoglycemia or not) I'm terrified of this happening to me again. I was alone with my daughter at the time, who is only 13 months old.

QTKY: What are you looking forward to the most this month?
Warmer weather! Getting our tax money so we can get new floors put in (wayy long overdue).

  • I don't want to freak anyone out but something I didn't even think was serious became very serious for me yesterday, I had been having a lot of swelling in my feet for weeks and then a few days ago my hands and eyes started swelling some too. I didn't think much of it just normal pregnancy swelling but it turned out to be severe pre-ecplampsia. I am now secluded to the hospital on bed rest for the remainder of my pregnancy,

So even though I did everything right with my diabetes and have had near perfect control being a diabetic made me high risk for getting this. So ladies just watch your swelling and see your doctor if you are noticing more than normal swelling at all.

  • @babybean82 I literally just check my ankles, wrists, and fingers for swelling.  I think I look good, next OB appointment is Tuesday.  My blood sugar is currently 55, just ate dinner though.  Rest up and stay healthy!!!  Let us know how you're doing too.

No experience here but I just wanted to say I hope everything turns out ok! That's very scary. I hope you get some answers and I hope they're good ones.
