January 2013 Moms

Moms with picky eaters, come on in.

So DS is going through this phase where he won't eat a damn thing other then a couple, less then balanced favorite foods. He will throw a fit if we put him in his high chair with something he isn't feeling right that minute. I know this is totally normal, and i have been just repeatedly trying this, that, and the other, trying to get more balance into his diet, but here's problem, he is already underweight. He is lactose sensitive, allergic to soy, and has to have pediasure every day for weight gain mixed with either a little WCM, coconut, or almond milk. So missing meals, and only eating things like nutrigrain bars, fruit, and chicken, worries me. He is stonchly anti veggie, and green is the enemy. The first time he said no? Yeah that was to peas in his pasta. I mean, we're talking attitude.. I can usually sneak squash and carrot purees that i make into pasta sauces to trick him, but we can't have pasta all the time.. So hit me with it, any tricks working for you? Or am i just going to need to wait this out?

  • Oh I'm so glad you posted this. I will be following. My DD used to eat any and everything, but now it's like pulling teeth to get her to eat anything. It's been going on for about 2 weeks. Hopefully it doesn't last much longer.

  • Taylor loves to eat, but definitely needs me to rotate what I feed him. He will shake his head no for things he doesn't want, and some days that is almost everything. Some days he eats avocado, some days he won't. Same with pretty much every fruit or vegetable. And then there are days he eats only applesauce and yogurt. I usually just buy small quantities of everything and keep offering different things until he actually wants one. So no real advice, just my experience! :)

  • I offer a couple of things in small amounts and ignore her. She seems to eat more when I'm not paying attention to her, which is weird. :-)

DD was the best eater ever. Got sick, had teething issues and would hardly eat anything for a week. I kept offering normal foods even though she wouldn't eat much and a week later she was back to normal. I also just started letting her "use" a fork or spoon when she eats - she used to only eat with her hands - and she loves it.

I'd keep offering normal stuff and offer silverware if you don't already.

The week of DD not eating her normal foods was one of the most frustrating weeks with her yet. I think I worried about it too much.
  • Oh and one more thing - she was being really picky and refusing her broccoli so last night I was almost teasing her with it, I would move it to her mouth, laugh and then eat it. She opened her mouth the second time but I still "stole" the broccoli. The third time she ate a piece and has been eating it again like normal since then.
  • DD has always been picky. Her food universe is a list of about ten things, including fruit, yogurt and string cheese. She's also a tad skinny. I'm trying and failing to get her to eat more. I'm going to follow this thread for tips! And, it doesn't feel as lonely knowing I'm not the only one cheering when she finally eats one piece of anything.
Our little Samosa arrives in January!
  • My little peanut had been refusing almost everything for like 2 weeks and I think it has finally gotten better. Although she still wont eat most veggies or fruit for that matter unless its pureed so I know she likes them. I think it may be a texture thing with her and teething but little skinny cant afford to miss a meal.

  • We're having this issue too! Homeboy used to eat anything and now he just throws it on the floor if he doesn't want it. So now I have two problems - get him to eat and get him to stop throwing his rejects to the floor lol

I'm glad I'm not alone! I've tried pretending that I was ignoring him thinking maybe he wasn't eating because I was staring at him but then he would yell until I would look at him. Once I looked at him, he would laugh and throw something on the floor. Oy...

  • Us too, DS loves the same three things for breakfast but is all over the board for dinner options. Plus I know his molars are bothering him so I'm sure that isn't helping at all.

  • Have you tried smoothies? You can add spinach in them and they don't even taste it.

Ds is super picky too. I just keep trying. On the bright side, his fave foods that he'll eat til he's blue in the face are broccoli and banana. But I really wish he'd eat some protein.

  • Just keep offering, don't stop giving them things, even if they throw it on the floor.  Don't label them picky eaters just yet,  it's a phase.

DS has become a picky eater recently as well. Vegetables are hit or miss and eating actual fruit seems to be fading lately. He's also underweight and we've started giving him pediasure to help with weight gain, just in case. What I fall back on, daily, are puree pouches. He loves them!

I do have some mom guilt, over this, but he eats actual food every day as well. There are so many organic choices. As long as there is at least one fruit, he is a happy camper. At least he's getting green stuff somehow. Another plus, they're great when we're out and about. Otherwise, I keep offering him fruits and vegetables. We'll get back to them eventually.
