Ear Pulling?

DS constantly pulls and tugs at his ears now.  He used to only do it a little when he was tired, but lately it seems like he does it all the time.  To the point of making little scratches and sometimes drawing a little blood.  I was worried that it could be an ear infection, but he has no fever and really has not been overly fussy or irritable.  He's been eating normally and sleeping normally for the most part.  He is teething, but even that hasn't been horrible.  He has cut one tooth.  Can ear pulling be relating to teething?  Seems like I heard that somewhere, but why?  I don't get the connection...

Re: Ear Pulling?

  • Yes it can. My DD does the same thing so much that I thought she had an ear infection but none of the other related symptoms. We took her to the pedi and she suggested it could either be A) her finding a new body part or B) teething. And low and behold she has cut 2 teeth within the last week.

  • DS is teething right now and keeps rubbing his ears on his shoulders.  He did it for the first round too.  I have no idea why they do it. I've also read it can be a comfort thing, but how I'm not sure.

  • DD does the same thing every time she is teething.  I think the pain radiates through their jaw and makes it feel like it is coming from inside their ear.  I probably didn't explain that right!  But I took DD to the pedi twice when she was doing her ear-pulling, and her ears looked great both times and it turned out she was teething.
  • DS pulls his ears all the time and the one time he's had an ear infection, he didn't pull it as much as he does at other times. He pulls it when he's tired, teething, his hair tickles him, etc. He's scratched it and drawn blood several times.

  • I have brought DS in to the pedi's office twice b/c I thought he had an ear infection. Embarrassed He had cuts in his ears from playing with them so much. No I notice he does it when he's tired. I think it comforts him.
  • DS does this when he is tired or teething and i read somewhere that it is common for babies to do this when they are distressed in some way.
  • Thank you so much ladies!  It helps to know that other babies out there are doing the same thing and it also saves me a trip to the pediatrician's office!
