Re: First night.

  • Our hospital has "suites" with couches or foldout beds or something for partners to sleep on. It will be like a crazy sleepover!

Our hospital has decent places for husbands to sleep and he stayed with me both nights when we had DD.  But now that DD will be at home, he may go home to sleep and to see DD in the mornings.  It depends though - last time I wasn't allowed out of bed for about 30 hours so I needed him there regardless.  If that happens again this time, he may not have an option to go home.

ETA:  hospital is only 20-30 minutes from home.

  • Yes. For many reasons. Mainly, I want him to go with the baby for the auditory test and 1st bath.

  • Our birthing center/hospital is an hot and a half from home. If we birth at the center, we have to leave within 12 hours so Dh will stay. If for some reason we have to transfer to the hospital, Dh will stay because duh. Dd and my mom will be at a nearby hotel.

Our hospital also has fold out couches in the private rooms and DH would in no way want to be anywhere else but with us and our first born.

  • No. I'll be on a public/shared ward and there isn't the facility for partners to stay. He'll only be 10 minutes away though.

  • The birthing center we are going to has a queen sized bed-he will definitely be staying.
  • When we were planning on delivering at the hospital, we decided that DH would spend the night there, even though we live 15 minutes from the hospital.  Its just we didn't want LO to be without a parent.  If I was sleeping then DH could stay awake with LO, and vice versa.  There is a place for him to sleep in the suite.  But now that we're at the birth center, he'll stay with me but I don't think I will need to spend the night there.
  • Husband stayed with our first, and I would have expected him to this time, except I think it'd be better for our son if he was home with him to help me being gone for two days not be so bad. My husband works long hours and has never spent the night anywhere without us, so I think me being gone for a few days is already going to be a bit hard for him!
  • I voted SS because he will be staying with me, but I wouldn't say it's not optional. I told him I totally understand if he wants to go home and sleep instead of the hospital, but he is insisting on staying. I am glad that he is since I am having a CS and could use the help, but would be ok either way. By baby #3 I have the routine down. :-)  He plans to stay every night.

  • I voted yes cause I have a feeling I won't be able to pry my husband away from our little girl. He's already so protective. It's like all little girls are ours. This morning he asked if we could donate money to a girl who had a stroke at the age of 16. We watched a video about her story and he was so emotional about it.

It will be like pulling teeth to get home to run home and check on the dogs. (We live 5 mins from the hospital.)

  • I think it depend on how things are going.

DD was born around 6 am after I had already been up for 24 hours. I thought it was nice to have a little time to myself when he ran out for food, etc. I can't remember if he stayed over the first night, which I assume he did. The second night he went home to check on our pets, get a good night sleep, etc. and I called him sleep deprived and on the verge of crazy around 11 pm to come back. Not that he could help too much overnight since we were BF, but it was nice to have him there to keep my a little more grounded and feeling less crazy.

This birth we will be at a closer hospital and already have ILs planning to stay over with DD, but we will see how it goes once we are in the thick of it.

  • Our hospital will provide a cot for DH as long as I get my own room. If I'm unfortunate enough to get a roommate then dads can't stay over.

However, I think I may actually prefer DH to be home for our dog...don't want to rattle him even more than I have to. My mom will be here but the dog doesn't like her...at all. :)
  • It's totally an option our hospital offers and we want to take advantage of, but I voted "maybe" because we do have a dog so we'll have to have someone take him over night for my husband to be able to stay overnight worry-free.

We've never left the dog alone overnight in the house (he's stayed at friends houses, boarding, etc.) so I don't think May would be a good time to try that out ...

  • I totally haven't even thought of this.

I think he'll likely stay with me but we haven't done our hospital tour yet so I'm not sure if there's even space for DH to relax comfortably.
  • He will be going home, the hospital does not allow the Daddy's to stay overnight.  I'm thankful for that though, because I don't think I would get any sleep/rest if he was there around the clock.  Last time he would stay with me till about 10pm, bring the baby to the nursery on his way out and come back in the morning.  This time, he'll be going home even earlier since we have DS to take care of too.

  • Our hospital only has private rooms and allows spouses to stay overnight so he'll stay. It also doesn't have a nursery so it'll be one big slumber party :)

  • I voted yes, our hospital has private birthing suites so he will have a full size pull out couch bed to sleep on. We are literally 5 minutes from the hospital but I just know I will want him there.
  • No, he will be home with DS.  I'm totally fine with that.

He'll probably run home to check on the dog, but I can't imagine he'd want to be away from us.  If I have an extended stay for whatever reason and he's not resting well, I wouldn't be opposed to him going home to rest & shower.

Probably not.  He did with DD, but this time since we don't have any family nearby my boss's daughter or my boss / his family will be watching DD.  I hate to impose on them, so as soon as all is well with me and baby, I'm guessing DH will go retrieve the toddler!  The hospital is only about 2 minutes from our house, and I'm sure my boss would be willing to watch DD more later, but we'll probably try to limit that.

  • We haven't discussed it yet but it all depends on if there is someone watching our 8yr old. I would like him to stay and I'm pretty sure our hospital allows it we will find out more after our tour.

I hope so, at least the first night, and all of the nights if DS2 ends up in the NICU.

My H stayed all 4 nights after DS1 was born.  When DD was born, we were caught off guard.  My parents already had DS1 with them because we were at their house when I went into labor, and H stayed the first night (she wasn't born until 10pm anyway), so it was quite late when we were all settled.  The next day she was doing so well that H and I thought it would be fine for him to go home with DS1 that night to keep his schedule close to normal.  That was the night she died, and he wasn't there.  I had a really hard time getting through to him on the phone and ended up sitting alone in the NICU waiting room as they tried to resuscitate her.  He was on speaker-phone with me when the doctor came in to tell me that she was gone, and we were both alone.  And since I was up in L&D when she started crashing, neither of us was with her either.

So while we haven't exactly been able to work out the logistics of how this will go, we have resolved that if DS2 ends up in the NICU we will move heaven and earth to make sure that a family member is with him in the room 24/7.  (Our NICU has a fold-out chair/bed, and parents are allowed to stay the night).  If DS2 is born completely healthy, on time, and with no issues, DH will probably stay the first night and then stay with DS1 the remaining nights.  But if there's any question, I think we'll work it out so that he can be there as long as I am.

Our hospital has huge, private rooms with couch pull out beds in labor and delivery and in the mommy/baby wing for DH to sleep on. Wonder if he will be sleeping during labor.

If all goes as planned I'll be giving birth in a birth center and going home a few hours later. So we should be home together at home our first night.

  • Originally we were planning for him to stay with us at the hospital but now he might go home and be with DS. It all depends on how things go.

  • If I can't have a VBAC and have to be at the hospital for 3 nights again because of a c-section, I think I'll send him home to be with Shorty to keep her schedule close to normal. If I can do a VBAC then I'll only be at the hospital for one night and DH can stay with me. I hope gramma can watch Shorty, but they live 6 hours away, so it all depends.
