Pregnant after a Loss

Anyone else have consistent cramping?

So I am 20 weeks now...on Sunday during church I started getting sharp, stabbing pains in my lower left abdomen.  I thought nothing of it at first, but it continued for the next 2 hours. I then went to the grocery store where it continued, and I started to feel very short of breath. I went home and laid down for half hour, and it went away. I then took my daughter rollerskating, where it started up again.  It then continued on and off during the day.

Monday I had my appointment with dr and it turns out I have to go back for another U/S b/c she said I was having a "tightening" during the A/s and they couldn't determine where the placenta was in correlation with the cervix. She asked me if I was having contractions. I told her about the cramping, she said if it doesn't stop with rest she needs to know about it.

Tuesday I was a bit stabby here and there, but nothing consistent.

Yesterday the same cramping started up during dinner and lasted about 3 hours. When I took a shower, I felt like my stomach was tightening, it wasn't painful at all, not cramps, just tight. Felt nothing like actual contractions, but made me short of breath. Only gets better if I lay down for awhile, but this is obviously not realistic for everyday life. I can't do everything in bed.

On my way to work today the cramping started again!  I got to my class, set up for the kids and found myself out of breath. I struggled a bit through the first class, but was fine during the second. My stomach was very sore today when I awoke, which I thought is probably due to stretching.  Currently at work and just having a bit of stabbing here and there.

Anyone else having this?  What was the tightening I was feeling? Is that Braxton Hicks? I have no idea, never had those with my DD. I just know if felt nothing like real contractions as it was not painful at all.

Re: Anyone else have consistent cramping?

  • Hmm. I had that around 18-20 weeks (like SHARP stabbing pain on my right side) and it was round ligament pain. This is my second child, though, and my pregnancy with him didn't have the stabbing pains!

They've gone away and BH are here now, but they are not painful at all - just a little uncomfortable and tight. Like, I notice it but it doesn't bother me. The RLP was causing me to double over.

Not sure that helps...FX all is well!

I think that's what the tightening was last night-BH. Totally different from the cramping, not painful.  Maybe the cramping is RLP...I dunno!

  • I definitely think it is worth a call back to your doc. Maybe they can throw some monitors on you. You've experienced childbirth and I haven't, but "tightening" is just how my nurse described contractions. I know nothing about what BH might feel like, but I would be cautious and give them a call just in case, particularly since it has been coupled with shortness of breath.  My RLP doesn't feel like cramping, but the occasional sharp, stabby pain.

Yesterday seemed to be fine most of the day as all I do is sit at my desk, but when I got home and started cooking dinner, I started cramping again. It went away quickly though. If I have anymore tightening I will probably call. But I looked up BH, and apparently the tightening that is not painful is basically what that is. So I'm not too worried about it. I know some people get BH, I just never had them with my DD.  As long as they aren't real contractions!!

Please call in. Even if they tell you it's nothing.

At 24 weeks with DD I thought my water might have broken (it didn't). Doctor's office test came back inconclusive because urine can trip the test and I had peed myself (lovely, huh? sorry for the TMI). They sent me to L&D. While I was waiting for the definitive test to come back, they hooked me up to the monitors. What I thought was just stretching cramps that were annoying was my irritable uterus contracting every 2 (!) minutes. FFN came back negative and my cervix was long and closed, but they still gave me terbutaline to calm things down. When I had 7 BH's an hour the next day I was back in L&D and got indocin and a week of bed rest to really stop things. It worked and DD kept cooking. I'm glad, though, that it was caught! If I hadn't gone into L&D I would have never known that the cramping was contractions, and clearly given all the treatment I went through my doctor was concerned even though the contractions weren't productive.

Oh geez! That is so crazy that cramping was contractions. I will give a call in to the doctor today even though today I have no cramping, so I'm sure they wont' have me come in. At least they can send a message to the doctor and see what she wants me to do next time I get the cramping.
