Montessori Preschool - please, school ME!

For anyone who went to and/or sent their child/ren to a Montessori preschool or if you are at all considering a Montessori preschool, would you take a moment to educate me?

I haven't even Googled it, I know nothing and I'm most interested in WHY you chose it.

What is it that made it different from a play-based preschool?

I'd love to hear everything you've got as I just finished our interviews/tours of the preschools in our area and budget and I literally just realized we didn't even consider Montessori but not on purpose.

Can anyone help inform me?

Re: Montessori Preschool - please, school ME!

  • Montessori schools are usually mixed aged classrooms, and are child-directed.  There is little direct instruction.  There are a lot of choices for students and they kind of direct their own education through discovery.  They tend to be more expensive because the teachers need special Montessori training.

A lot of schools use Montessori materials and call themselves Montessori preschools, but are not truly Montessori schools.  I would read up on it, and see if that type of education fits your child.  I have friends who have had great success, and friends who have not.

  • The classes are mixed with 3, 4, & 5 yr olds together.  The younger kids learn from the older kids and all the kids can learn at their own pace.  They do not use tradition tables and chairs, most activities are done on the floor or standing as not to restrict natural movement.
Like the pp said anyone can use the Montessori name but it doesn't mean they are true Montessori.  Not that makes them a bad preschool, I just don't think you should pay $$$$ for a school that is not an accredited montessori school.

  • Look up schools at the American Montesorri Society. (https://amshq.org/School-Resources/AMS-School-Accreditation.aspx)

A school doesn't have to be fully accredited, but every teacher should be accredited. There is instruction, bc teachers the kids new materials via "presentations", and they assist the kids as needed. The kids also help clean and take care of the room. We're looking into a 6-9 y o program for my son. I really like the philosophy.
