Ugh, has this ever happened to your kids?

This morning as the babies were playing, I noticed L walking around chewing something. My first thought was that it was another ladybug, but when I fished it out of his mouth, it was small, white, hard, and pointy....it looked like a piece of tooth! So I had him say "aaah" for me and I noticed that one of his bottom molars that is coming in looked different....like a corner of it was replaced by a red spot.....it looks like he chipped off part of his molar! He isn't in any pain at all....has just been playing happily and went to sleep at naptime no problem. I called the pedi and just left a message letting them know what happened, but haven't heard back.

Has this happened to any of your kiddos? Is there anything I'm supposed to do? I know it's just a baby tooth, and, like I said, he isn't in any pain, but I'm concerned nonetheless. It's just so weird. :-/

  • I would call the dentist like now. He probably needs to be seen to make sure there is no decay or infection.
  • Loading the player...
  • I've never heard of that but would be concerned. I would get him in for an emergency dental appointment.

  • I agree with everybody else...call the dentist and if you don't have one, call the pedi
  • team call.  I honestly don't think it's normal for a kid to lose parts of teeth like that.  Was anything hard eaten?  Maybe from that, or a fall and he didn't tell you?   If neither of us, I'd be worried about decay or possible infection or something.

Ds chipped a tooth at target once, he JUMPED out of the cart and landed on his face. Anyway, they pretty much just told me to watch for it to turn gray because that would mean it was rotting. I would take him in those becauee depending on how it is chipped he has no enamel on that part of the tooth which means it can decay or decay will spread super fast.

ETA: omg lol! nevermind i just read your follow up. Glad everything turned out ok!

We chipped all four front upper teeth. I don't even know how it happened. I just looked in DD#2s mouth one day and notices they were shorter. Off to the dentist we went. They x-rayed and confirmed that the roots were cracked and told us to watch them to see if they turned grey, in which case they would remove. They never did and now at 7 are finally falling out. Since it was only a little bit of the bottom of the teeth they never bothered DD.

Just read your follow up. Yep. I am now laughing at you. At least it was nothing.

  • That happened to Emily in 1st grade - a piece of a molar broke off but she didn't notice and neither did we (she brushes her own teeth) and she ended up with a cavity in that baby tooth! Ugh.

I'd call the dentist because they might need to protect that tooth and the gum. Good luck!
