Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Tips for a power outage

Thankfully we have not experienced a significant one yet here in Durham, NC. However, we are anticipating heavy (for our area) snow and some ice, which has been said to lead to power outages. In the event the heat goes out and the outside temperature drops to 20 or less, what tips do you have for a six-month-old baby? He is formula-fed (has not yet started solids), but we can make bottles one at a time using bottled water and powdered formula. He sleeps from 8 PM-6 AM waking occasionally (but not needing us to come in) in his crib in his own room.

Tips for sleeping and what to dress him in? Any other words of wisdom?

My best wishes to those already experiencing "snow-mageddon 2.-0!"

  • Just make sure you have plenty of bread or snacks for you.
As far as sleeping I would put socks & layer up the babies clothes. For example I would put a onsie, socks under a fleece sleeper. Depending on your baby & how cold it is.
We have a buddy heater with little bottles of propane we keep in the house just in case the power goes out.
Dh is a lineman for our electric company & if we lose power probably means he's out working & can't hook up our generator.
The buddy can keep a room nice & toasty!

  • My MIL lives about 8 miles away, but if the roads are bad, it will be impossible to get to them as we have to drive through "country" to get to them.

PS - LOVE the sleeping picture! My son tries to do that with his sleep sack on. :)

  • We also live in the country & have east/west road so if there is any breeze the snow drifts terribly!
Basically dh keeps the generator on standby!

  • We had a similar issue when Dallas had the ice storm recently. We used the fireplace during the day, and all co slept at night. Used the car to charge phones.

We had packaged tuna and crackers, sandwiches, and cereal for us. We just opened the fridge as little as possible to keep things cold.

    Good luck! Stay safe!
  • We had to deal with this during our ice storm a little while back..

I would make sure to have plenty of water on hand, candles by the dozen ( set them up around the house before power goes out ), flashlights, if you can get your hands on a little propane stove that can really help, and I personally kept DD's snowsuit out and handy just in case we had to bundle her up.. I got a big bunch of blankets out and ready..

And like PP said, stick a phone charger in your car! If worse came to worse you can hear up in there too.
