DC Issue with Almond Milk

DD is 10.5 months old and started refusing bottles last week. She was BF until 8 months when I found out I was pregnant & my supply dried up. She tolerated formula but as of last week she refuses bottles (with anything in them) and formula out of a sippy cup. She refused goat's milk and because she's only 10.5 months old & I'm lactose intolerant I'm trying to avoid cow's milk at least until she's 12 months or all together if possible. We finally tried almond milk and she loves it. Drank 2 full cups of it Sat & Sun and had some this morning with breakfast. DD was actually drinking it today when I left daycare and her teacher was fine with it. 20 minutes later I got a call saying that I can't send in almond milk and they won't even let her have it today. Apparently the center is not just peanut free but completely nut free. Number one, I'm generally annoyed that they are going to let DD go without milk today. Kids are only allowed to have milk at the table strapped into their own seats so I don't see how any other kids could get her almond milk. Number two, any suggestions on what else I can give her? DD does well with finger foods but she only has 2 teeth. Thanks

  • rice milk? hemp/soy also good suggestions....just for her time at daycare...mornings and evenings you can stick with almond milk.
  • I'm trying to avoid soy because of the estrogen issues.

@PrivacyWanted - I know I can get coconut milk but I don't think any local grocery stores carry hemp or flax (maybe Whole Foods?) Do you know which of those is considered the best alternative
  • rice milk is not a recommended substitute, it doesn't have nearly enough protein.  coconut milk isn't perfect either, it's very fatty.  my daughter's allergist gave the side eye to hemp and flax, I don't remember why, but I don't think it's been studied enough.

and I do kinda need to give the side-eye to someone who asks an internet board rather than their pediatrician for recommendations.

  • @rubber_chicken I'm calling the pedi on my break this afternoon. I planned on discussing it at DD's 12 month check up but I guess that's not going to work. I just wanted to see what people suggested so I knew what specifically to ask the doctor about.

I went through something simiular.  My son refused to nurse any time other than morning and I was not able to pump enough to cover everything.  He was the same age.  My pedi flat out said no to other milks he needed formula or breast milk even though he was getting 8 ounces of BM while I was at work and whatever he got from me in the morning.  Well he hated formula.  He woud take the bottle if it was breast drink, formula throw accross the room.  I was finally able to get it into him by mixing with ceral and applesause.  I just want to warn you don't be suprised if your pedi is upset that your DD won't take fomula.

  • So I talked to the nurse and she said their preference is cow's milk and if DD hasn't had problems with cheese & yogurt she should be fine. After that she suggested rice milk but said I could try coconut when I asked.
  • I am glad you got some guidance from your pediatrician's office.  Alternatives to milk are all a little sketchy and not all that nutritious.   DD refuses to drink anything other than water.  She eats a variety of nutritious foods every day, and she is perfectly healthy.
