Have you switched to a convertible car seat yet?

I keep thinking I should switch DD over to a convertible seat, but whenever I do, that is the day she falls asleep in the car. But then at some point she wakes up as I'm hauling that gigantic thing around for drop off/pick up/ swim class/ whatever.

Has anyone else made the switch yet? Am I the only hold out?

(I guess I don't know how to do a poll in the new format yet.)

Re: Have you switched to a convertible car seat yet?

  • Still in the bucket over here. But I often leave it in the car. I wasn't allowed to lift her in it for 4 weeks after surgery anyway. We haven't bought ours yet either.
  • Loading the player...
  • Still bucket seat over here.
  • I did but mainly because my car was in an accident and I've been driving a rental with the convertible for the past six weeks. I miss the bucket. I can't get him out of the convertible without waking him up.
  • We switched a little while ago because I was no longer able to carry him up the stairs to my daughter's classroom.
  • Bucket here too. Still haven't bought the convertible.

I feel your pain! DS1's classroom is on the lower level.

  • Yep! We switched over around Christmas. It solved our car screaming issues, but now I'm stuck in nap jail when she falls asleep.

Nope. Haven't bought a convertible yet. B is 15lbs so it still isn't toooo terrible when I have to cart his carrier around and I like that I can stop places on the way home from work and he sleeps through it all.

  • Nope, sticking with the bucket until she reaches the maximum weight limit.  Given that she's only 15lbs. right now I think we have a while!

  • We are still in the bucket here. We are very close to switching. It's really only a matter of installing the convertible. But I will miss the ease of the infant seat so I may be holding out for that reason as well.

We switched over in January. He was getting so uncomfortable in the bucket. He wasn't maxed out for height (or weight) but the straps were just not doing it. Maybe he just has a long torso.

Right now we are 50/50on waking up from naps when getting out of the car.

This is our problem as well. Her shoulders are above the strap hole. All my children have inherited their dad's long torso and short legs.

  • We still have the infant seat but are thinking about switching very soon.

Only problem is that I think we are going to end up buying one for both of our cars.
  • Still using the bucket and will for awhile still....weight limit is 35 lbs and she's only 17 and nowhere near the height limit. But I don't carry it much, mostly use the stroller it clicks into.....

  • We just switched yesterday... I have noticed pluses and minuses. It is easier to get her in and out of the car, it kind of takes up less room and she loves she can see out the window now... the only bad this is when she falls asleep her head dangles and looks so uncomfortable... I'm going to try and fix this with maybe a neck pillow or adding towel rolls
  • Nadia is still in the infant seat. Ours goes to 30lbs and 30 inches, but I know she'll reach the height way sooner. At her 6 month checkup she was 26 1/2 inches. I think we'll switch this month. I always hate switching. I still time leaving the house right before nap time, as that way she sleeps on the car ride and for awhile when I am shopping etc. but when she is awake I just leave the seat in the car, as she hates it when she's awake.

  • Infant seat. It is so cold here, I feel like being in it keeps him warmer. When it gets nicer outside, I plan on making the switch!

  • Bucket here too. She falls asleep almost every drive so I'm going to hold off on the convertible for as long as possible.

  • We were going to wait until he met the max on height or weight (which seems to be a long time coming) but since he starts crying/screaming all the time in it, we tried our convertible seat and he's been way happier. To save ourselves headaches, we are sticking with the convertible.

  • We're in the bucket too. We're just waiting for our convertible seat to come in. It's been ordered and we'll switch when it gets here.
  • He's been in a convertible from the beginning. I really like it. We have an infant carrier but I hate carrying that thing so we never installed the base.

The shoulders should be at or above the strap hole as long as they are rear facing. Once they forward face, the shoulders should be at or below the holes.

I have the convertible seat in my car, and we still use the bucket in DH's car. It has been about 50/50 on transfering him to the crib if he falls asleep in my car.

  • We'll have to switch really soon. Oliver was 28 inches at his six months and I know he's grown since then.
  • Bucket baby here! We have the Graco Snug ride Click connect 40. Bucket goes all the way up to 2 years old! :)

  • Finn's not even 15 lbs yet, so he has a ways before he outgrows his plastic bucket. That thing is just too convenient for me to make the switch yet.

  • We just did today, because at 18.5 pounds, Gavin is a tank and I cant haul the bucket in and out anymore.
  • I have two sitting in my basement that I'm hoping to install one day.

This. I'm waiting until it's warm. I like bundling him all up inside and taking him out in his seat.

This kid may not have a lot of bowel, but he has plenty of guts!
DS born at 34 weeks with (surprise!) gastroschisis turned short bowel syndrome.
131 days in the NICU, 7 trips to the OR, G-button, daily TPN....
We are impatiently awaiting the day we can say goodbye to his girlfriend Ivy for good.
  • We have purchased ours, but they are sitting in the guest bedroom. DS is sleeping in his bucket right now, we just got home from running errands. This makes me not want to switch yet!
  • We switched at 5 months.  At her 4 month checkup LO was 28.5 in.  Our seat goes to 30lbs or 30 in or when their head is less than an inch from the top.  We outgrew the inch from the top before we outgrew the actual height.  (long torso I guess).  Using a convertible was rough for us at first since she wasn't sitting up in high chairs or shopping carts but its so much easier now.
  • Bucket.
