Pump Dying?

I got a double electric pump (Ameda Purely Yours) through the insurance before LO arrived. I've been using it almost every day since she was 6 weeks. It has seemed like the suction on it has becoming weaker and weaker for a while now and tonight when I was pumping it pretty much stopped all together. I could turn it off and let it cool down and turn it back on and it would work for a few seconds and then stop again.

My question is have any of you had a pump that you got through your insurance stop working? Were you able to call the company and get a replacement or did you have to go buy a new one out of pocket? I'm calling around tomorrow but just wondering if anyone had any experience with this.

TIA!

Yup. I got the same one (Ameda) and it died before I even went back to work (January). I ended up buying a Medela PISA from BRU. They were just having the trade in event, maybe it is still going on and you could trade it in? I didnt call the insurance company and try to get a new one or anything. It is clearly written in my plan that you get one per baby so I was pretty sure they wouldn't care what happened to it once I received it. Also, I love the Medela SOO MUCH more than the Ameda. It works soo much better and the Ameda was so cumbersome to travel with.

    Edited for clarification.

  • They tried getting me to troubleshoot be PY And sent me replacement parts. Oh the thing stopped working altogether so I just quit bothering to pump because I'm at home. I wish I would've done the trade in like @UpsideDownFrown did. I don't think it's still going on. :(

  • Like pp said they tried to get me to troubleshoot, but then overnighted me a new motor.

  • Mine stopped working too recently. It wasn't one I got from insurance, but I'm pissed about it because I hardly use the dang thing! I EBF and only use the pump if I am planning a date night or something. I have used it maybe 10-20 times. It just stopped working. Pretty dumb. I haven't called about it yet, but man that is so silly to pay that muh for something that doesn't last very long.
I had a friend that pumped every day at work and went through three breast pumps in a year.

  • I have a Medela and when it started acting up I called and they had me troubleshoot it then sent me knew parts. I'd try that first.
  • Ugh, mine seems to be working a lot harder lately. I really would like for it to just last 3-4 more months.

If you can't get a replacement, you might also check into renting one. I think the BRU near us rents the hospital grade pumps, although I have no idea about how much that would be. Pumps are too expensive to be dying like that.

  • I EP and I think mine is definitely dying. I noticed a huge drop in supply and tried everything to get it back up but I think it comes down to the pump because it sounds weak. Let us know what you find out!

  • I had an Ameda for the first 9 months with DS1 and it worked great until it just up and died. They sent me a new one and that one just never worked as well. They sent me another new one and that one still didn't work well. It just wasn't as strong as my initial one. I gave up and bought a Medela PISA and haven't had any problems with it even after 11 months of pretty heavy use.

  • I've got a Medela that works great but in my lactation lounge group last wk it was brought up that 9 different mommas are having issues w/their Ameda pumps. Some thought they were getting a cheaper version thru insurance but someone @ Ameda told one momma that manufacturing was moved from Europe to China and quality is suffering. The moms that've been persistent have gotten new motors or replacements. Don't know if the China thing is true but be assertive & insist on a replacement if you're having issues.

  • On the ameda truly yours, one thing that really helped that I didn't know was to line up the lines on the plastic part of the rubber hose that goes to the motor with the lines where the plastic joins on the motor.

  • My Ameda was junk and it has been boxed up for four months now. I am a SAHM so I just feed on demand but I would have loved to build a stash for emergencies and date nights.

  • I haven't used an Ameda but I EP for 5 months and I had no problems with my Medela PISA. I pumped 6-8 (was even more when I was getting my supply up in the beginning)  times a day for 45 min-ish each time and that thing was a work horse!!
