3rd Trimester

Family dislikes all the names we have chosen!

So on Christmas everyone was asking what names we have decided on...we like Bryce for a boy and Briley for a girl (our son is Braeden and we'd like to keep with the b's) well I should have kept my mouth shut bc all three of my brothers had something negative to say about the names -  I know it shouldn't matter but I care what other people think - what do you think about Bryce and Briley? we don't know the sex so I was hoping to have the name hammered out b4 the baby comes - now Im stuck! Oh and we are LOST as to the middle name for both - any suggestions?

  • I like Bryce - Briley would take some getting use to for me, but if you and your H agree, then it should not matter what others think.

We really liked the name Brielle and Elliana if this one was a girl and when I shared those as names, my family gave me the "are you serious?"?

To each his/her own I say!?

  • I like both of your names,  and don't think you should worry about what others think.  DH and I agreed on the name for our baby girl, it's a pretty traditional name (Magdalen Grace) and we still get looked at funny when we tell people.  Who cares!
  • I'm with your family those are horrible names.  And are you a Duggar? You need to keep the same letter?

    God help those poor children...

  • i like them.  i agree that bryce would sound good with a short, classic name like james or thomas.  briley.....middle name would be tough for that one.

yes, this is why SO and i aren't telling anyone the baby's name.  :)  also, i wouldn't want their opinion to color my opinion of his name.  doesn't matter what anyone else thinks!!

Wow...a little rude, don't you think? Wouldn't a simple "it's NMS" have sufficed?

    no kidding... RUDE.

  • I like both of them. If you and your H agree, I say don't worry about it. I know my grandmother doesn't like the name we've chosen for our son, but it hasn't changed our minds.

Oh, and I agree w/ pp. Briley Marie and Bryce Thomas have a good ring to them!

If you don't want comments, I have an idea...don't post on a PUBLIC message board...

    oh the horror!!!

I am a recuriter, I work w/ resumes all the time.  We do throw out resumes w/ funky/weird names on them.  I just got rid of one with a person named Chockerlies.  I have no idea m/f, race, etc, but I also don't really know how to say that name.  Trash bin.  Some of our clients have asked us to send them resumes with names "we can pronounce."  People, especially employers can and DO discriminate based on name.  Your name alone is not a protected hiring class.

So unless your last name is Wallenda or Barrymore and your child is going into performing your really have to stop and think about the effect a name will have on their future employment...

I agree, what are her kids' names? I'm sure she hates what we're naming DS too but he isn't her kid!

    I like Mitchell ...

  • Okay... you asked about the names and when someone said they are horrible you said they are "rude" - that makes no sense. I can see why your family had an adverse reaction. Both names are overly trendy and not what would be considered normal names. Read the book Freakonomics - they scream lower-class and will but your children at a disadvantage later in life. Your relatives are probably just concerned.
  • I think the only thing that matters is that you & DH agree on the name. You can name your kids whatever you want to! And if your new baby is half as cute as your son in your siggy - he or she will be able to pull of pretty much any name out there.

Nobody liked our choice for baby name. My DH has an unfortunate name, but he's the III, and it's important for him to feel like he's carrying on the family tradition for his dad & his grandfather. Our little boy will be Willard Barnes M____ IV. Yep.... bad name. But we're sticking with it. He'll go by Billy (Bill) just like my husband does -- unless he ends up really liking Willard -- LOL!!

I tell anyone who tries to argue with me that they're free to name their own children & I'll name mine. (I did however tell DH that I get full veto power when it comes to naming our second child!!)

i'm gonna agree with that statement. you did ask for opinions on the names, don't take it as a personal attack.

back to your question, bryce is okay IMO, but briley is nms at all. i agree with your family on that one.

Lower class? The family I know whose son's name is Bryce owns 7 restaurants in town and they live in a mansion/house I'd really struggle to call anything other than upper class.

I have to agree on Bryce. The only Bryce I've ever known was pretty uppity. I would expect to meet more guys named Bryce in country clubs than in trailer parks.

  • really can't stand either. totally nms.
  • I like Bryce...a lot.  Briley, not so much but I really like Brinley (vetoed by DH).

  • I think Bryce sounds a lot more yacht club than trailer park. I like it. Briley is nms, but it's not awful.

  • As as pp mentioned, this discussion makes me think of Freakonomics.  Cool  Not to say that these names are "lower-class" in any way.

I have never met a Briley and am not sure how I would pronounce it; it's probably NMS.  Bryce is a name I like.

  • Taryn was going to be Bryce if she was a boy...so I like that one!
