Cocoa butter for stretch marks - testimonials?

Everything I've read says there is no evidence to support that using cocoa butter can help prevent stretch marks. But my sister and a few friends used it while preggers, and swear that is why they didn't get stretch marks. I'm using it since it can't hurt. So, any mamas out there who used cocoa butter every day, and did you get stretch marks?
I did search for previous threads on this and didn't get any results.

Re: Cocoa butter for stretch marks - testimonials?

  • As far as I understand stretch marks are based a lot on genetics, while cocoa butter certainly won't hurt things I don't think it will do anything amazing to prevent them either unfortunatelt

  • It's not going to hurt, but it won't prevent stretch marks.

A slightly better thing to do is to drink plenty of water. It'll help your skin be more elastic.

  • It won't hurt but it won't stop the inevitable. I didn't get stretch marks until the end with DS but I've already noticed them this time. No lotion is gonna stop it now. :(
  • I figured it wouldn't hurt

I got an expensive clairns oil that was recommended for my last pregnancy, but the effect is the same

I think keeping the skin hydrated sure can't help stretch mark wise

I didn't get any, but like pps said, that's probably 99% due to genetics

  • I used it last pregnancy. Not religiously as I'm not a fan of the smell. I found that frankincense oil did a good job after DS was born in helping to lighten the marks I got. This time I'm using the oil from the start to see if it helps (the oil is known for improving skin generally so it can't hurt).
  • I used it last time and got only two stretch marks at the top of my old naval piercing, which I don't think anything would've stopped except forethought in college.

I'm using it again and so far so good.

  • I've heard lots of talk about genetics being the reason behind stretch marks and/or slow weight gain. I'm using the palmers lotion for stretch marks (which smells just like chocolate..mmmm) and the Burt's bees belly butter. Makes my skin feel amazing! Don't forget to apply to you thighs and lower back!! So I've been recommended. So far I haven't seen any but I'm only 20 wks. I've got a lot more stretching to do!!!
  • I used it last time. I didn't get any stretch marks, but I didn't get really big and my mom never got any stretch marks either. I am using it again this time, but I don't really think it does anything - more just superstitious that if I didn't use it and did get stretch marks I'd kick myself (even though I readily admit I don't think it helps - crazy pregnancy brain!)

  • I've been using Palmer's but I agree that they are genetic. So far I've gotten stretch marks on my boobs which is the only place my mom got stretch marks when she was pregnant with all of us.

  • I used it religiously, but got stretch marks like nobody's business! It's really bad and I'm not even putting forth the effort this time. I used lotion when it was really dry, but why waste my time and money of it doesn't help? I also didn't like how it made me feel greasy.

  • PP all have the same advice I've gotten. The only advice I've gotten was from two friends, one with three kids the other with one. They exfoliated everyday in the shower, a homemade mix they gave to me called Cinnamon Roll Body Polish.

    -Oatmeal
    -Brown Sugar
    -Cinnamon
-Massage Oil Blend (jojoba, sunflower etc)

I love it even if it does nothing so relaxing!

  • Unfortunately it is really genetics like everyone else has said. The moms who swear by various lotions are the lucky ones who aren't prone to stretch marks. I've been using the burts bees belly butter stuff and cocoa butter like it's my job and I still already have new stretch marks (I already had plenty on my boobs and butt from puberty... I look AMAZING naked! Like a tiger/human combo! ;-))

  • Agreeing with genetics! I also know several women who swear by vitamin E oil. I will say that while cocoa butter didn't keep the stretch marks away from me, I feel like it did make them a lot less noticeable. They weren't really dark, more skin colored. I used the lotion for about 6 months after DS was born and they are practically invisible.

  • My friend actually told me the opposite...she said that once she started using the cocoa butter lotion she got stretch marks and immediately told me not to use it. I've been using it since around week 12 just so my skin wont be dry and I don't have any...yet. My mom had stretch marks only with my brother, but let me tell you he wasn't a normal size lol. But yes it's mainly genetics.
  • I use a lotion with vitamin E made by St. Ives. I have no idea if it's helping with stretch marks, but my skin is a lot softer and less dry with all of this cold weather and air.

  • I didn't get any stretch marks until week 41 with DD. I used Burt's Bees Mama Bee Belly Butter. This time around I'm trying Mustela Stretch Marks Double Action which claims to help reduce the appearance of new and recent stretch marks. So far I like it. I do think its diminishing the brightness of my old stretch marks and its not greasy feeling at all. I know its all genetics but I think I should at least try to give my poor belly the best chances at survival!
