I would rather my kids smoke pot every once in while when they are older than start smoking. I've watching smoking be way too hard to quit and I have a recovered drug addict sister who says it is harder than heroin to stop doing. I just don't get why pot is such a big deal as it's effects are so much less than cigarettes and even alcohol.
ETA: effects vs affects. I'm totally high right now. Plus I wanted to add I would rather my kids did nothing dangerous obviously!
I feel it's almost as bad for your lungs as cigarettes are.
It may be, but it's not addictive. Also you don't smoke a pack a day of joints, it's far more recreational than a total lifestyle change.
Anything can be addictive.
What she said. There is physical and psychological/mental addiction. Cigarettes and hardcore drugs are physically addictive and come with a whole slew of side effects when people try to quit. But people can still develop a psychological dependence on things that aren't physically addictive: food, marijuana, etc.

True. So can food, so don't feed your kids! Some things are far more addictive than others and cigarettes are top of the list. Even for people that don't have the "addict gene" (which my sister does and has been able to conquer everything but cigs).
I think bed sharing is stupidly dangerous and it boggles my mind how popular of a practice it is.
We do it. We tried her pnp, swing, bassinet, and crib and she screamed and wouldn't sleep. DH works at night so it's just me and her and it's the only way we both sleep. We are safe about it. Like any other way, there are risks, like with every method of sleeping, but you do what you have to and what works for you to sleep.

I don't know about her, but just because I recognize marijuana can be addictive doesn't mean I think it should be illegal. I actually support legalization if only to devote our crime-fighting resources to more important things. I just think people sometimes downplay the effects it can have. It is still a substance that can cause physical harm and mental dependence, even if it doesn't cause physical dependence. People need to use their best judgement and weight the pros and cons like they should do before they drink alcohol, smoke cigarettes, etc.
I think the rule "Everything in Moderation" should be constantly present. That's with extreme stuff like pot, booze, and fatty foods. I also think it applies to TV time and stuff like that. I feel the world today is too bandwagonish and everything is bad. Well, "bad" things can be okay if not done in the extreme like Americans like to take things. (I am American. We have an extreme culture known for over doing.)
On the topic of things you smoke, I think that e cigarettes are so stupid. I also think people look ridiculous using them.
Huh?
Yeah, I guess my parents should stop using them because they look ridiculous.
Better they get lung cancer, smell like cigarettes, have their cars smell like cigarettes, have their house smell like cigarettes, have to leave wherever they are (work, movies, restaurant, etc) to go have a smoke, not get to spend nearly as much time with their grandchildren because of smoking/smelling like smoke/house smelling like smoke, etc, etc, etc than to ever look ridiculous.
You know what looks ridiculous? Someone smoking a cigarette.
ETA: Obviously very unpopular with me because I have to worry about losing a lot of people I love to smoking. I'm thrilled my mom and step-dad started smoking e-cigarettes. I lost my step-mom to lung cancer...unfortunately, my dad still smokes real cigarettes and if I could get him to switch to e-cigs that would be freaking awesome even though a lot of damage has already been done. I also lost my aunt to lung cancer. I'll take people looking ridiculous over early death any day.
I don't understand how people can not have answers to some poll questions. do you smoke pot, yes or no? its anonymous. who are you hiding from? do you think by not answering then your answer isn't true? There are four people among us that don't know how to answer a simple question... I am baffled.
Most of the time I agree with you on these polls. However, I clicked on just show me results bc I don't smoke and haven't in years but it's primarily because i was ttc, pregnant and now I am breastfeeding. So I felt like it is a misrepresentation clicking yes or no on that question.

They don't have to smoke. I personally don't buy into whole addicted to cigarettes excuse. I smoked for several years and quit cold turkey. My dad smoked until he was 53 and discovered he had major heart disease and needed 7 bypasses. He quit cold turkey then too.
@ilovemarfa addiction is a very personal experience. My dad quit cigs cold turkey no problem. My husband took years to quit with gum, lozenges, etc. and still has cravings after 4 years off of nicotine. Nicotine can be a real bitch, especially for someone who is genetically disposed to addiction. I do not have an addictive personality at all and can quit just about anything with ease but I just feel lucky and have sympathy for those I love around me that struggle with it. I also pray my boys didn't inherit the addict gene from my DH.

I agree that people are predisposed to addictive personalities. My husband practices chemical dependency and psychiatric medicine so I hear a lot about addiction. I think addiction to heroin and other drugs is a real thing but I think anybody can have the will power to quit smoking.
I think my only problem with pot being legal is that now there is pressure on me to allow it in my house.
Also is it worth losing a job over? Employers can still screen you for it even if it is legal in your state
Lol why on earth would there be pressure on you to allow it in your house?? Also, I don't think most of us here would agree that it's worth losing your job over!
Hey @foxiloxi!!! Glad to see you around here! I've missed you!
About E-Cigs-I'd rather my SO smoke one than smoke cigarettes. He's going to smoke whether I like it or not. E-Cigs please me because they don't stink like cigarettes and are cheaper after the initial set up. We just went and bought my SO a new one yesterday.

Oh boy to that last line. I don't have the time to link to the studies of how powerful the nicotine addiction has been proven to be but maybe someone else does. Just consider yourself lucky you quit with such ease.

That's really great for you, but that's not how it works for a lot of people. Just because you don't "buy into" nicotine addiction doesn't mean it doesn't exist, and it certainly doesn't mean that people who have trouble quitting can't find an alternative in e-cigarettes that is a) likely less harmful to them and b) definitely less harmful to those around them.
If e-cigs didn't exist, my parents would still be smoking. It's that simple. So I'm just not sure why you judge people who have taken steps to be healthier and, even more importantly, are eliminating second-hand smoke, which in turn allows you and everyone else to live healthier lives.
Really late to the game today but have to say that I "squeed" out loud when I saw @foxiloxi in this thread!!!! Hey girl hey hope all is well, we miss you in these parts
DH and I could have been a public service announcement about how uncool smoking looks a few months ago. We had a babysitter (rarity) and went out to dinner but finished on the early side because we are used to speed eating with two kids at the table. We went to drive home and realized we would get home before he kids were asleep and that was unacceptable. We agreed that is would be fun to maybe smoke a joint (it was warming out and beautiful, windows down kind of weather), but we had no idea where to get one and I'm nursing anyway. So we drove around to stores until we found one that sold cloves so we could split one and have kind of a buzz (pathetic, seriously). We didn't even know where to go to smoke it. We ended up going to another neighborhood and sitting on the hood of our minivan (so cool!) smoking a clove while I coughed my brains out after two puffs. We honestly probably looked so middle aged and lame if any teenager looked out the window and saw us they would never pick up anything smoking related.

I am extremely lucky, I was able to smoke and stop without having a hard time, I enjoyed it as a chance to decompress but I didn't need it. The opposite is true for my parents, my dad also stopped cold turkey, 3 times. That shit is hard and thinking anyone should be able to 'just tough it out' through quitting any addiction is insane.
riansmommie I feel special!! Thanks for the love!! I've really missed you guys! I'm actually only online today to try to deactivate. I've learned that although I "met" some pretty awesome people, TB just isn't for me right now. I took a nice long break and it was good and now I'm ready to make that permanent.
If any of you have snapchat and want to stay in touch you can pm @melohdy to grab my user name (hope that's alright melohdy!).
Love you girls!
Thanks for coming back to tell us you weren't coming back.

Coming from a family with addicts and having my own bout of issues, I'd rather my child be a cig smoker than a pot smoker. Pot IS a gateway drug to much worse substances. Not only that, but the drug itself is horribly addictive and can cause tons of issues physically and mentally. (it's not as highly addictive immediately, like heroin, but it can become highly addictive after years of use... this fact is debatable, but ask any drug and alcohol counselor and they will tell you how awful it is to withdraw off of marijuana).
Sure, those of us who have tried it were lucky that we didn't continue to try it, but have you ever met an avid smoker? They act like it's an olympic sport. I have a relative who smokes every day and it's such a shame. He's paranoid about everything in his life, he lacks motivation and desire to change, and the amount of money he wastes is ridiculous. I don't blame his issues solely on pot, but I know it's a major factor in how he lives his life.

Bedsharing: Awesome. Also, the science says it's not more dangerous than sleeping in a crib. In fact, some of the science says it might even be safer. We don't do it on a regular basis, but I have been known to feed baby girl at 5 am and leave her in bed with us for a couple of hours after that.
Scented products: Gross. I know what "CLEAN" smells like, and you can't fake it or mask a dirty smell. Also why I don't send conventional Pampers-type diapers to daycare with baby girl. Only 7th Generation or BabyGanics.
Cigarettes: Gross, vile, horrible. I've already watched people I love die from this terrible addiction. Not allowed in my house, my car, or anywhere my children are.
E-Cigs: A great alternative if you're quitting, but the people who never smoked but took up E-Cigs just because? Dumbasses. Honestly, WHY?
Pot: I have no problems with pot. It should be legal everywhere. I don't smoke it. A friend of mine who is a well known pastry chef gives us baked goods with pot, but I just give them away to a relative because neither DH nor I really enjoy pot enough to eat them.
Also, we've had some big health scares and people in the ER because of all of the chemicals and pesticides used to grow pot. Organic if you're gonna smoke it, folks.
My original OU: I haven't read enough on this board to form an opinion here, but in real life, I see so many lazy parents when it comes to food. You have this amazing opportunity when your child is a baby/toddler to develop their palate. Expose them to tons of fresh fruits and vegetables, help steer them toward more savory than sweet, etc. But people don't, and give up the minute they think their child doesn't like something. "My kid hates anything green." Really? They were born hating all things green? No, that kind of finickiness is not inherent. When we introduced eggplant to my son, he thought it was the absolute grossest thing ever. A while later, he had some baba ganoush on pita. He thought that was the best thing ever. Kid? That's eggplant. Sometimes you have to just keep providing opportunities.
ALSO.. it saddens me that so many people minimalize the severity of smoking weed. Same goes for alcohol (and yes, I am a drinker, although I don't partake as often b/c I can't stay awake after one beer). Now that legalizing marijuana is starting to gain some momentum, it doesn't seem like as many people are taking the drug seriously. It is what it is, I guess, but I think it's disturbing that so many people are so nonchalant about it.

Agree and Disagree. I agree that it's so important to introduce your kid to as many things as possible and try to develop their palate and try to avoid always going to the 'kid friendly' foods because they're easier. But I also think picky eaters do exist and it's not always a failure of parenting. I have a friend and her kid is just a picky eater, my friend has taken years off her life obsessing about getting this kid to eat, she did all the 'right' things when she was smaller but her daughter is just picky plain and simple.

I don't think people minimize the impact of pot in the abstract. Most of us know smokers. I know dozens of them. The vast majority are respected contributing members of society. This may be anecdotal, but the percentage of pot smokers I now know who are total slackers isn't really greater than the percentage of slackers I know in the general population.
Also, we have data about the use of pot and its impact. It's not entirely correct to call it the gateway drug. While people who smoke pot are more likely than their non-smoking peers to try, say, cocaine, correlation isn't causation. In fact, it's not the access to marijuana that results in the secondary activity like moving on to a new drug. It's other personality characteristics of the user. You can look at something like the Rand Institute report about what happened after the Dutch coffee shops started offering it.
Sure, those of us who have tried it were lucky that we didn't continue to try it, but have you ever met an avid smoker?
Lol, yes, many. Most are gainfully employed or have their own businesses, they own their own homes, they are married and successfully raising children. They just happen to have a bong/pipe collection rather than a wine cellar. And not a single one has ended up in rehab for heroin addiction
I certainly have met a couple of potheads who fit the stereotype but I've also met a couple of winos that fit that stereotype but I'm not going to call everyone who is a wine enthusiast an alcoholic.
VERY true.. and I shouldn't have stereotyped. I just know SO many that ARE the stereotypical pothead. Maybe it's the area that I was raised.... Just seems like most get hooked and go on to harder things.

I'm interested to know the ages of the people who find pot to be NBD and the ones who find it to be a BD (which apparently is only me). I wonder if it's a generational viewpoint or a personal viewpoint. I'm just thinking outloud (out-type?) right now.. I don't understand why anyone in this day in age would start smoking. It stinks, is expensive, hard to quit, and terrible for your health.
I soooo agree. It seems that all my friends have taken up smoking in the last year. Honestly 4 people have in my close circle of friends.. Cigars too. It absolutely BLOWS MY MIND. I cannot understand.

This exactly! We recently tried Acorn squash with A. It was my first attempt, I thought it was ok, nothing to write home about but not gross. She HATED the texture. Am I going to give up? Nope, next time I'll blend it up and see if she likes it smooth. That stringy stuff was something I didn't like as a kid. My parents let us refuse a few things as kids, for me it was always texture- mac n cheese (homemade style), beans, spinach and eggplant were the only things I refused in childhood. I also think if you are always (I'm talking beyond transitioning into solids) giving your kid something different than what you have, they will grow to expect that. If you snack on crap all the time, they will follow suit. We're big veggie lovers, so I hope A sees that and follows along!
Our lil' diva: late like her Momma: 40 weeks 5 days!
I think it's stupid that long hair is considered the "norm" for sexy. I think the right short style, especially when you wear it with confidence, can be even more sexy than long hair. All of this coming from the girl who is growing her hair back out because I miss it like crazy...
FTR, I suck at UO. It took me all day and that's the best I could come up with. Watch, tomorrow I'll think of something great.

Yeah my dad is almost 70 and I'm 90% sure he still smokes a joint every once in a while. He's also a millionaire self made business owner and fantastic father to us so he definitely doesn't fit the pot smoker stereotype. Or I should say, the pot smoker stereotype for those who are usually adamantly against it!

I feel the world today is too bandwagonish and everything is bad. Well, "bad" things can be okay if not done in the extreme like Americans like to take things. (I am American. We have an extreme culture known for over doing.)

They don't have to smoke. I personally don't buy into whole addicted to cigarettes excuse. I smoked for several years and quit cold turkey. My dad smoked until he was 53 and discovered he had major heart disease and needed 7 bypasses. He quit cold turkey then too.
I agree that people are predisposed to addictive personalities. My husband practices chemical dependency and psychiatric medicine so I hear a lot about addiction. I think addiction to heroin and other drugs is a real thing but I think anybody can have the will power to quit smoking.
About E-Cigs-I'd rather my SO smoke one than smoke cigarettes. He's going to smoke whether I like it or not. E-Cigs please me because they don't stink like cigarettes and are cheaper after the initial set up. We just went and bought my SO a new one yesterday.
If e-cigs didn't exist, my parents would still be smoking. It's that simple. So I'm just not sure why you judge people who have taken steps to be healthier and, even more importantly, are eliminating second-hand smoke, which in turn allows you and everyone else to live healthier lives.

I'm not new. I just hate The Bump.

VERY true.. and I shouldn't have stereotyped.

It's a question that crossed my mind when I was browsing this thread; I wonder how many people are in their 20's who are okay with it, compared to their 30's.
And hey, I have no issues if people want to smoke. It's just not for me (used to love it til it gave me panic attacks) and I pray to God it's not for my children either.

I also think if you are always (I'm talking beyond transitioning into solids) giving your kid something different than what you have, they will grow to expect that. If you snack on crap all the time, they will follow suit. We're big veggie lovers, so I hope A sees that and follows along!
