What's the verdict on oatmeal cereals? Are you guys using "baby" oatmeal or just reg oatmeal? We've been doing rice cereal (for the iron) but in would like to get away from it at some point.

Yes, baby oatmeal. It has plenty of iron in it.
No one wants rice for breakfast.
I eat rice for breakfast about two times a week. Hot rice, milk, cinnamon and brown sugar---soooo good!!
    Totally the same.

I prefer brown sugar in my oatmeal vs formula.

  • Green light for rice cereal .. I gave her oatmeal. In 2 weeks we discuss other food options to try ... I have given her cereal a few times but haven't been consistent .. I was just happy she took the spoon! I got the shopping cart cover as a gift .. But haven't even tried to use it ... She is not sitting up yet. Def rolling over , trying to crawl. She is not even a fan of the bumbo but wants to sit up on her own. Right now we are grocery shopping w the stroller ... Which is spaceous enough at the bottom , to buy what I need. There are so many changes everyday !

I am a shopping cart putter inner. My cover has a strap that goes around his belly, so he doesn't lean forward, and then the backrest supports his back and I put a rolled up blanket on one side of him and my purse on the other side of him. He doesn't move at all, and he LOOOOOVES it. Obviously, I stay right there next to him and just sort of chuck the things into the cart (I don't, like, leave him chilling and go stand in line for the deli counter or anything). He truly can't move from this position, with the way he's wedged in there. I'll accept my flames with dignity.

ETA: Not sure how clear it is here, but the backrest of the cart actually comes up to the base of his head, so his head is supported from behind.

  • Not sitting in the cart yet.

We do BLW and didn't plan on giving her food for another of couple of weeks or so. My parents watched her so DH and I could have a quick date night. They fed her an entire container of purée. The next day was horrible she blew thru 3 diapers, 3 outfits, and a pair of my pants.

  • No cart or food for my chub cake. DD 3 tried to give him an animal cracker and a strawberry yesterday. He didn't seem to mind both for the 2 seconds he got to lick them.

  • We've given DS some oatmeal and some avocado. He's 4.5ish months. The doctor said we could start whenever we wanted, but she recommended waiting a bit since nursing is going well. So I intended to wait, but he has been so interested in our food, that it seemed like he was ready to try it. He doesn't actually eat much, but he enjoys the process. He grabs the head of the spoon and shoves it in his mouth. It's pretty funny!

As far as the oatmeal goes, we ground up some steel cut oats that we had on hand and used those.

  • No sitting on his own, no eating purée anything either. He's one happy camper on the boobeh...he's growing great, so why mess with that. I actually won't start solids with him until 6 or 7 months.

  • We're doing BLW, but I found dissolvable rice cracker things to practice feeding herself and she loves them. I let her have them 2-3 times a week just to experiment with. She's doing good with getting better at chewing a little and not choking herself, which is the point right now.

I could probably do the cart soon, but she's really tiny. She sits up in her stroller fine, though, which is similar to the cart. If I had a padded cart seat cover thing I think she would be good. She can stand up with me holding one of her hands and balance for 30+ seconds and she has strong core muscles. When I carry her I don't have to hold her back (but I do keep my arm there in case she leans back suddenly).

  • We've tried oatmeal a couple times just for shits and giggles. They ended up wearing most of it. They're 4.5 mo. We may try again sporadically but probably won't start in earnest for another month or so. It's just one more complication to add to the day and I don't have the energy for it usually.

@norbert5 I don't understand how that happens? We don't even have anything like that in our house since we're no where near starting solids and we tell MIL/FIL the anticipated amounts/times DD will probably want a bottle, so they know what the deal is. How do your parents just decide to give your LO purees on their own accord and where did they get it? That would piss me the F off if I was you.
  • Not doing either and he is a week from being 5 months. He is starting to pull himself Into a sitting position and he did a creepy village of the damned look at me when I said the word "bottle" last night so I'm pretty sure he can understand that word....but I can't wait until he can go in the cart unassisted.

  • calibr8te I know! Two weeks ago she was playing on the mat next to DH and she just grabbed his pant leg and pulled herself up so she could reach the dog in his lap. She does it all the time now.

  • We plan to start purees next month LO will be 6 months then. And we plan to try him in the shopping cart this week our cover has padding on the sides and back. Plus it has a strap on the back for him. I will also have my carrier in case that doesn't work I can just wear him.

We are 5 months now and he's sitting up great! He also gets bored in the car seat and wants to look around and sometimes he wants to play more and the carrier doesn't let him do what he wants.
  • Isn't it recommended to start cereal (whether it be oatmeal or rice) at around 4 mos and solids around 5-6 mos for allergy purposes? Or did I dream that up? DS turned 4 mos yesterday and we will start oatmeal soon. He has a pedi appt tm. We haven't tried the shopping cart yet because he's still a little wobbly.

Add me to the list for feeding purees. DS is 5.5 months but 6 weeks early, so his milestones are all over the place, as are his growth spurts. I just follow his cues - he started to get really grabby with our food, would get pissed if we were eating and he wasn't, is a monster eater (like, 5 ounce bottles every 3 hours - this kid is the hulk), and can sit up almost unassisted. We got the green light from our ped at the 4 month appointment, which I seriously side-eyed, so we waited until he was 5 months and started showing more serious signs.
We've only done oatmeal, pears and sweet potatoes so far. I'm going for avocado next.

  • Just wanted to share what ped said about cereal. She said there is no real benefit to cereal. It is a complex carb. It's good to use for practice since it is cheap. Once she gets the hang of it, stick with fruits and veggies. A anyone else hear that?

Franco Paul born 6/4/15 at 39 weeks.  Mila Francesca born 10/19/13 at 37 weeks.  Both born via C-Section after 6 years of fertility treatments, disappointments and losses. Love them!!

  • We've done oatmeal a few times. Sweet potato once and she isn't a fan of applesauce, but ate it mixed with oatmeal. She does eat pieces of avocado.
No cart. She isn't sitting unassisted yet on a flat surface. She's 5 months today.

  • Nothing yet here either. DS is almost 5 months and has maybe in the past week showed some interest in food, but he's all about the boob so I'm holding off until he can sit unassisted, which he's close to. It'll be closer to 6 months before we start. I'd better get MH to get the diaper sprayers set up for the CDs.

I also babywear in the store or if he's snoozing in his carseat I bring that in. I haven't quite mastered the whole get him out of carseat into carrier without waking him up yet.
