Let's Talk: Baby Fingernails

They're super sharp, and almost uncutable due to their paper thin make up.

How do you combat this? Mittens? Layettes with built in mitten? Jedi Mind Tricks?
How long until I can allow LO's digits to roam free without fear?!

All the women in my family have told me to bite them. DH did it over the weekend, worked really well!

  • We started with the mittens, but my mother kept guilt tripping me about how "he won't know he has hands" so I gave up.  (To be fair, he does seem to enjoy having them out & about.)  I've been trying to file them, but honestly I can't say that it seems to make a difference.

LO hasn't really scratched himself yet, so either the filing seems to be working, or he just is showing restraint.  Still scared of the clippers at the moment!

  • I just cut them when she's sleeping. I cut them when I can feel her scratch me.

This is us, too. Believe I've clipped them three times now.

  • Pjs with mittens for now. I'm actually not afraid of clipping them anymore. Newborns are WAY easier than squirmy toddlers :-)

  • I got the Safety First lighted newborn nail clippers and clipper LO's nails. The light feature makes it so much easier to use.

  • I tried filing, utterly useless. I used the clippers once with fear. The other day I discovered the little nail scissors and they were much easier. I could make sure I was under just the nail, no skin and with the curve I felt much safer.

    That's really fancy!!!

I have that one but without a light! I clip them with the clipper. She cries sometimes because I'm keeping her hands still but hey, I feel like crying when she's scratching the skin off my breast! Now we're even lol

I still use the same baby clippers for my 9 year old that she had as an infant. As time went on it became part of the routine for her

  • I also cut my son's nails while he slept. Normally, I'd think that it would freak me out but it was never a big deal. DH absolutely couldn't do it and still doesn't like to even though DS is 2.

  • Wait a minute... are you all saying you don't take your newborns for mani/pedis?

Mittens, or really ANYTHING that takes LO's hand away from his mouth FREAK HIM OUT, so they aren't really an option.  Right now they're still nice and short from when the hospital bathed him and clipped them.  I'll start filing soon though.

  • I clip his nails but he still manages to scratch his face.  He won't keep the socks or mittens on and he's already grown out of his newborn sleepers.  Fortunately, I found a bunch of footed sleepers at Old Navy with the fold over mittens in the 0-3 month size.  That is what works best for us.

  • Relieved to see I'm not the only one who bites LO's fingernails! I do it while he nurses.
  • I bite his because I'm terrified of the clippers.

  • LO is 3w1d, and I have clipped twice. Both times, I waited until she was asleep... And took my time doing it! The first time I didn 't cut very close, because I was scared!
