Moms with kids with eczema

Could ds have eczema only on his bottom? This is the conclusion that the CD board believes is the culprit of ds's persistent diaper rash. I must admit, I have no idea. Dr Google recommend going to the pedi for diagnosis. Is that necessary?

Re: Moms with kids with eczema

  • No reason why he couldn't. My girls both only get their eczema on their faces, and Simon gets it on his face and his upper back. If he has sensitive skin, it could cause flare ups when his skin is in contact with urine or feces. But eczema, contact allergies, and yeast infections can all look very similar. WIth CDs, contact allergy is less likely (assuming you haven't changed detergents or anything). With a yeast infection, it would start mostly in the folds and creases, but could spread to the entire diaper region over a few days if it didn't improve. With eczema and even some food allergies, the rash can get worse with each exposure.

What are the remedies you've attempted so far?

  • I was thinking it was just diaper rash. We tried two different CD safe rash creams with no improvement. I've stripped, bleached, washed, and rewashed my cloth diapers. I've discussed extensively with the CD store in my area and tried changing my wash routine, then ultimately changed my detergent. Not one thing I've done had made the slightest bit of difference. :(

  • Have you "aired him out", yet? Like let him go several hours without the diaper throughout the day to see if it could at least heal up a bit? Does he scratch at it, like it's itching? Does he have broken skin/bleeding anywhere?

James is my only little guy with no eczema, but he has had some serious contact reactions to a few disposable diapers, and the rashes they left took WEEKS to get rid of, because the initial damage was so bad that every time he had a bowel movement it just got worse - we ended up having to do the hardcore maximum strength Desitin and air him out a few times before those kinds of rashes would subside.

You could call the pediatrician and see if they would support applying a very thin layer of 0.5% hydrocortisone. It's a topical steroid cream used to help with eczema (and other inflammatory issues) flare ups. But I wouldn't use it if there is any broken skin at all :(

  • For a sight reference, this is what a yeast diaper rash looks like:

It can spread and become more of a solid grouping, or even start to bleed, over time.

  • An allergic rash is more "hive" like, with the bigger, puffy patches. Eczema can be a wide range of looks and feels on the softer parts of skin, but is usually in raised patches that get rough and itchy.

  • And then classic waste-contact rashes are just bright red and raw.

  • Nope, doesn't look like the year rash. It's not raised and doesn't seem to bother him except during diaper changes. Then he acts like it's more painful than itchy. Maybe I'll put him in disposables and use desitin for a day and see if that works before I call the pedi.

    Thanks for the help @Rynleigh!

  • DS2 gets it the worst on his bottom and back of his legs.  I have a homemade lotion bar (coconut oil, shea butter, olive oil, almond oil) that we call "bun juice" because we spend all winter rubbing it on his buns to get rid of the eczema.

  • DS has the rash that refuses to go away.  We've tried everything.  Our pediatrician said to use Neosporin.  It worked great to clear it up.

  • Thanks @light52! I picked up some Desitin Max and paper diapers, but if that doesn't work, I'll give the neo a try.

I cd and use babygamics eczema lotion. Highly recommends. Wipes can also aggravate it. We use one disposable overnight with destin max as well. Use prefolds and the babyganics lotion by day.

We are so thankful that our second daughter, Lillian Elizabeth "Lily", was born healthy and happy on February 11, 2013.  We love her to pieces.

We lost our first daughter, Hannah Grace on May 4, 2011.  She was buried on May 14 during a beautiful service at my home church. We are grateful that if she could not be here with us, that she is healed and whole with the Lord. We look forward to the day when we will get to meet her. We love her so much.
