I'll be getting a mesh breathable crib liner but not installing it until we have a roller, probably about 6 months.
We had the mesh with DS but MIL is trying to convince me of the crib bumper that matches the bedding. I feel like its only for looks and doesn't serve a purpose
No. With DS, we bought a breathable bumper when he started to roll around and got his legs and arms stuck. We removed it when he was able to stand up. We'll see what this baby needs when the time comes.
@brittany&dain the ones that come with the bedding set are totally just for looks before the baby comes. They are considered a SIDS risk. If your MIL wants it for the cute factor get her to have it converted into a crib skirt.
I've heard that they are bad for little babies but that they are useful for older babies once the risk of SIDS goes down, but I probably won't risk it.
Luckily manufacturers are starting to realize a lot of people don't want them so you can find bedding sets where the bumper is sold separately. This is making me very happy as I don't want to waste money on something I don't want to use. I will probably get a breathable one. The color choices in those are vast and I imagine you could find one to coordinate easily.
I am confuse by why this keeps coming up - it would be like if we repeatedly had a thread about whether or not anyone is planning to take up smoking while pregnant. Bumpers are a very well known SIDS risk I just don't understand why we have to keep talking about it
Im glad someone brought this up. I just figured to get a breathable one but didn't think not to put it on for a few months. Is it a risk if I still put it on before the babies can move around?
No, I ordered the bedding set without the bumper due to the risks they pose. If I have a problem later with the baby's limbs getting stuck, I will consider a mesh one.

I think it's odd that even though the risk factors are well publicized & known now that some crib bedding sets still come with bumpers and that stores are still selling them. People are under the assumption, "BRU still sells them so they must be safe."
I've thought about getting the bumper but only to re-purpose it for either for window treatments or a crib rail cover for when baby starts teething (I've seen this on Pinterest & Etsy a lot lately). This would mean I'd have to do some sewing however, so I'll probably skip it entirely.
Bumpers are coming with the bedding set we registered for but we won't be using them. We registered for mesh ones that will be put on later when baby boy is older.

I said this last time this came up, but I'll answer again. I will have one for looks from the time the nursery is put together until the time she is put in her crib (she will sleep in our room at first.) Once she gets moved to her crib, I will replace it with a breatheable bumper.
We will actually use the bumper once baby is moved to her crib 8 monthsish. By that point the SIDS risk is over and we had a ton of missed sleep due to DD rolling into the slats and hitting her head. At 2 we are still using the bumpers on her toddler bed to cushion her rolls. We do have an angel care monitor as well.
I'm worried about SIDS - why would you take the risk?
we absolutely will not be using one, I know the information about the risks now, and the risk isn't worth it to me
like why these days we know to sleep a baby on their back, yes lots of babies survived sleeping on their stomach - but also some babies died. same with bumpers IMO, we now know it's a risk, and it's not one I'm willing to take with my baby
Our daughter is 27 months. We started using a traditional bumper at around 18 months because she rolled a lot and would hit her head and wake up. She started sleeping through the night once we put it on. We'll be moving her to a big girl bed soon and will ditch the bumper with the baby until probably around the same time because of the SIDS risk. At the point she is at she is pretty aware of what is going on so I'm not worried with a toddler. She also sleeps with a small blanket and toddler pillow to get her ready for the big girl bed.

With DS I got a breathable bumper when he was 7/8ish months because he got his chubby leg stuck in the crib slots.
