Thoughts on 'Dorothy'?

It was my grandmother's name. Just wondering what everyone thinks about it.

Re: Thoughts on 'Dorothy'?

  • I've always disliked this name, sorry. The sound of it just doesn't appeal to me. I think old lady and The Wizard of Oz. I think it could make a nice MN, though.

  • I love the name Dorothy. DH and I have strongly considered it. I think it's underused.

  • I love it!
But...I'm also a huge Wizard of Oz fan.
And also...I've only ever known one, she's about 25 or 30, and I've always thought it just didn't fit her. That's just her though. It could definitely fit someone else.

  • Love it! It was my grandma's name and my aunt's name. My grandma went by Dottie. I just love that NN.

But this is a positive assocation for me, not negative. I think it's cute.

  • I like a lot of old lady and old man names, but Dorothy is one I just can't get behind. I think it could make a decent mn.
  • Love it and the NN Thea!

  • Thanks! DS is Oliver and DD is Alice and I just think it might fit. I think I like Dottie as a nickname, lol. We don't know if this one is a boy or girl yet so we are tossing around ideas. My mother is adopted and her birth mother's middle name was Dorothy as well as her paternal grandmother...also her adoptive mother's name (the grandmother I was talking about) was Dorothy. So I just thought it might be nice to bring it back.

  • I'm not really a fan.  I know an older lady named Dorothy and she goes by Dot.  I like Dorthea better.

  • It's cute, but I wouldn't used it as a fn, mn yes.  My GGmother was Dorothy and was actually alive when I was younger, so it's a name I may consider at some point, but again only as mn not a fn.

  • Some of the older names coming back I really like. This is not one of them. It's just not pretty to me. I had a friend in college with this name and it was just always awkward and not at all feminine. Dorothea is DH's elderly aunt and this is slightly better to me, but I just can't really get behind this name at all.

I like it! I had a cat named Dorothy (see siggy) until she ran off last summer :-(

I like Dot as a nickname, too.

  • My grandmas name is Dorothy and it was on our list. Didn't make the short list though. Definitely think it's underused.
  • I think it goes great with your LO's names.  Use it!
  • It's not my style.  It sounds old, and I can't picture it on a little girl.

  • I don't know why, but I very much prefer Dorothea to Dorothy.

  • Underused for sure. I adore Dottie, but I find myself only liking Dorothy for some reason.

  • I don't like it. Dottie as a nn is cute though if Dorothy is your style.

  • I like it. You could also use Theodora which is the same Greek words (gift of God), just reversed.
