Toddlers: 24 Months+

Does your toddler hit you when having a temper tantrum ?

My daughter is 2.5.  Today and yesterday she has showed a unbelievable tantrum.  She is not showing signs of sickness and this is not normal for her.  Yes, she has had small tantrums but these over the past two days are severe IMO.  Today, she feel asleep on the way home in her car seat.  When I went to get her out she flipped out.  Smacking me in the face, yelling and crying.  I tried to soothe and explain to her I couldn't leave her in the car.  I brought her in where she rolled around the floor, kicking her feet, and crying.  When I tried to pick her up she scratched my face (brought blood) and pulled my hair just like a rage!  It was over in about 5 mins then she told me she was sorry!  Is this normal??  I post here every now and then but mostly read others post.  TIA!

  • Was she asleep when you started to take her out of the car? Could she have been startled or had a bad dream?

DS has had a few tantrums. If he starts swinging I lay him on the floor where he can't hurt himself. I say we don't hit and I walk away. I figure he needs time to cool off.

  • Yes, it's normal if it happens only occasionally. If it happens regularly or the frequency increases, then it may be something to discuss with the pedi. At this age, they can't really recognize their emotions, much less express them.

  • it's normal, my daughter does that only sometimes, but it definitely is a shock and makes me wonder what the heck is going on. I always tell her ,no hitting/biting whatever she is doing and walk away and she calms down. I know its frustrating but staying composed is the best thing we can do.

  • Welcome to a new developmental phase. It's no fun, but try to stay calm and consistent and make sure it is clear that hitting is never ok. This could take a couple months to outgrow but it will pass.
