Babies: 0 - 3 Months

3rd Tri U/S Questions

I had an u/s done yesterday prior to my NST (due to high blood pressure). The tech said the baby's weight is 5.5 lbs. How accurate do you think the weight is in predicting how much the baby will weigh full-term? Anyone have a late u/s?

Also, according to my LMP and u/s (12, 20 wk)  my due date  is 1/22, 1st u/s (6-7 wk) says 1/27. Yesterday's came back 1/30. I know there is only an 8 day discrepancy, but should I consider myself 35 weeks or 36 weeks?

Thank you ladies!!! Enjoy your X-MAS and congrats to all with their bundles of joy!

Re: 3rd Tri U/S Questions

  • I had an ultrasound a week before I delivered and the estimate was 7 lbs. 10 oz. ?My son was born a week later at 6 lbs. 2 oz. ?So I think they can be way off. ?

  • I had monthly ultrasounds due to pre-e. At eeach ultrasound DS was measuring large. He was estimated to be 9 pounds a week before I delivered and ended up being 7 lb 11 oz.
  • My LMP gave a due date of Oct 6th... the first US gave one of Oct 23rd.. he was born the 26th (!) and they estimated him to be 2, maybe 3 weeks overdue because of his size, alertness and lack of vernix/lanugo. USes aren't that great in my books now! Lol.
  • I had an u/s exactly 1 week before DD was born. U/s said 8 pounds 5 oz...dr was estimating 7- 7 1/2 pounds via external measurements...and she weighed in at 9 pounds 1.5 oz.

  • I had an ultra sound exactly a week before I had DS as well and they said he was around 8lbs 14 oz....he was born 8lbs 15 oz.
  • At 32w DS was predicted to be over 9 lbs and head in the 97th percentile - he was 7 lbs 14 oz and head in the 50th.  So yes, they can be wildly inaccurate.

As to your question on due date, only very early u/s's are accurate in measuring due dates.  They also dated my pregnancy wrong at first (I knew roughly when we had conceived and the first u/s was a week off) and later he caught up.

  • U/S can be off a pound in either direction, but mine was right on (u/s one week before induction said 7.8, he was born a week later at 8.8).  The first u/s between 6 and 10 weeks is the most accurate in predicting due dates, I would go with DD of 1/27.  Do NOT go by a late u/s for due date, once they pass 10 or 12 weeks babies develop at their own pace, before that it is very standardized.  Good luck!

  • Hello! I was given one on Friday morning due to high blood pressure as well and they estimated her to be 6lbs, 1 oz and 36 weeks, but she was born later that day at 5 lbs, 5 oz and only 35 weeks developmentally. So they are really not super accurate.
  • The ultrasound is not accurate at all for weight this late in the game. 15% error is assumed. (Meaning the real weight will be anywhere from 15% less to 15% more) The gestational age is also only accurate + or - 2 weeks, so you really don't change your due date based on that.

  • I had an u/s at 40 weeks. 1 week later, my son weighed 1 oz less than the prediction. It was pretty right on for us.

  • Your ?results are very close to mine. DS was measured at 5 lb. 12 oz. at 37 weeks and was born at 6 lbs. 8 oz.?

I think that they are ?changing the date only because your DC is on the smaller side like mine. It is nothing to worry about. My friend had a much bigger baby by c-section but I was able to deliver my DS. ?
