When I was working and starting before the crack of dawn it was the night before. Now its generally the cleanest pair of yoga pants and whichever tank I grab first.
I do a mental check at night to help figure out what I will wear in the morning, but I don't go as so far to lay out the clothes. It helps me get ready faster in the morning, especially if I can identify WHERE the clothes are. Clothes back from the cleaners are often in the downstairs closet, I am not great about bringing my hang-dry clothes upstairs, tights and underwear are usually in my dresser upstairs, etc.
Now that I have the baby and a million things to do in the morning to get out of the house and to work on time, I pick out my clothes at night. I sometimes have a hard time figuring out what to wear so it can take me a while. I set them out so I can quickly put them on in the morning.
I wear black pants, flats, and one of 6-7 shirts to work every day. As long as they are clean and match, I'm good to go. I work with 95% engineers, so the bar is set fairly low.
