Proposal stories.

Re: Proposal stories.

  • I was convinced we wouldn't be getting engaged for a long time.  I was in the process of buying a townhome and he was so angry about it!  I couldn't understand why he wasn't happy that I was getting my own place after saving through my first 2 years of teaching.  I thought he would be excited because he was living with his parents and would have a place to escape.

DH and I now are on the directing team for a YMCA summer camp, but we were counselors before we were directors.  Halfway through the week, we were running some rag ceremonies for other counselors.  He asked if I could stay up there to talk to him after the ceremonies were complete.  I was still totally clueless as to what was going on.  After everyone else left, it was pretty much a blur and before I knew it, he was down on one knee with my ring!

He was so nervous all week because he had the ring in his backpack and didn't want to lose it and I was terrified the rest of the week that I would lose it at camp.

  • He took my dad to dinner and asked his permission than came right over with my ring on a rose stem. I almost missed it- I didn't see the ring- I thought he was giving me a rose since I was sick all weekend.
  • My DH and I had been dating about 3 years, and he had just moved with me to MT for my first real job since graduating from grad school.  I figured we were on the right track, but honestly had no idea when he would propose.  After we'd been living here for about 2 months, I had to go to Australia for my job to get vaccinated (former disease research scientist over here).  Since my work was paying my whole way, we decided DH should come too.  I think I even said something like, "Man it would be awesome to get engaged in Australia," while we were flying down, but figured it was wishful thinking.  We don't buy anything on credit and had just had big moving expenses and some major vet bills come up right before the trip.  So no money for a ring.

We spent a great nine days hiking in the Blue Mountains and were back in Sydney just before I headed back to Newcastle to get my skin test checked and then my vaccination.  On my way back from Newcastle, my DH kept calling me to see where I was at, and about what time my train would get in because we were potentially going to go do tea at the conservatory.  I finally had to tell him I didn't think I'd be back in time, and he said that was fine he'd come meet me at the station and we should go walk on the Sydney Harbor Bridge.  I said sure that would be great.  However when I called him to tell him we were almost there, he was having some stomach issues, so couldn't make it to the station.  I said no problem, I'll just walk up to the hotel by myself.  He kept insisting he would meet me half way and we should do the bridge, and I was like no it's fine, don't worry, we'll do it later when you feel better.  He actually did meet me about a block or two from our hotel and again insisted on going to the bridge.  I said we should do it later when it was dark and all the lights were on.  Then his stomach would have time to settle, and I could rest a bit after a long day.  He reluctantly agreed and we headed back to the hotel.

When we got to the room, he immediately headed to the bathroom, and I changed into some comfy clothes.  I noticed that a bottle of champagne we had bought at a local winery earlier in the week wasn't sitting on the table anymore.  I just thought to myself, "Oh, that was smart of him to put it in the fridge so it can be chilled, since we'll need to drink it before we fly out tomorrow."  Are you thinking, "Wow this girl is clueless," yet?  So he comes out of the bathroom and sits next to me on the bed and puts his arms around me and I just sort of sit there, because I'm exhausted.  So he says, "Come on aren't you even going to pretend to like me?"  And I replied jokingly. "Nope, just going to pretend to like you until you put a ring on my finger."  And he said, "Really, only pretend until you get a ring."  And I said "Yep, only pretend."  And then he rolled over, grabbed something, and popped back up with a ring in his hands.  I was totally shocked!  And my reply was, "Is this for real?!  Are you serious?!"  And he says, "Yes it's for real, will you marry me?"

Of course I said yes.  Later he got down on one knee and asked me again in the middle of the Sydney Harbor Bridge.  And admitted that he was actually really glad that I set him up so he got to ask me in the room.  He was really worried that we'd get up on the bridge and go to ask me and drop his grandma's ring into the harbor. :)

  • My DH and I had dated for exactly 7 months. It was his 21st birthday and I went over to his house to make dinner with him. We needed a couple things at the store and on the way he told me he wanted to go to these rose gardens (a popular park in the area). I agreed and off we went. We walked around the rose gardens.. And then walked around them again... And then again. I was totally oblivious and thought man this guy likes flowers. Then suddenly he stopped and pulled a ring out of his pocket. He was too flustered to remember to get down on one knee but he proposed and it was so sweet. In my joy I just laughed though so I'm sure he would have liked a better response. I told him yes and We immediately picked the date. He told me I was the best birthday present he's ever gotten :)
  • We met (on MySpace...whoa) in 2005 when I was in my last semester of school and he was living at home in a nearby town, so a lot of our early dates were local places in between campus and his house. The night that we both knew we loved each other was spent on a walk in Verona Park in West Orange, NJ. We had a "moment" on this bridge, where it all kinda fell into place.

Anyway, fast forward to a week before our 5th anniversary, and we have plans to have dinner with his family. So we head up to North Jersey. We arrived a little early, so he said he wanted to go on a drive. Then he pulls into the park and he's like, let's go for a walk. I started to suspect something, because even though it was late March, it was about 45 degrees and too cold for a nice walk really. But I went for it. So we walk up to the bridge and he's like, "Let's find the spot where we fell in love" and we're tryin to retrace our footsteps and find the exact spot. And then he said "I can't wait anymore" and got down on one knee with the ring and asked me. I nodded yes and grabbed the ring out of the box before he could put it on me! We were both crying, it was very nice. I proceeded to call my mom and sisters and let them know.

THEN...we get to the restaurant to meet his family, and my family was there, too! Turns out the dinner with his parents was a ruse, and everyone knew but me! So we had a nice impromptu engagement party. It was perfect!

@bootsie327 - NNJ in the house! Are you still in NJ?
Woo! I am! But I live in Brick now. I went to school at William Paterson in Wayne, and DH is from West Orange, so we are up in that area a decent amount! Where are you?
I grew up in Bergen County and now we're in Hawthorne, like 10 minutes from WillyP! I went to Montclair :)@bootise327

  • Technically, I don't think there was a proposal, but DH kind of did a few years before it was official.

In the summer between high school and college, DH and I used to stay up until dawn at his parents' house watching old movies and playing trivial pursuit and being total nerds.  One night/morning as the sun was coming up and we were about to fall asleep, he said something like "If we're still together when we're out of college, we should get married."  Then he fell asleep, unlike me and my sudden total wakefulness.  Bastard!

After college we had a Serious Conversation about it and decided to be really truly engaged.  Our fifth anniversary is three days before my due date.  :)
  • I think I posted mine on the ring board, but here goes! We'd been together for 2 years and had already discussed marriage and a future together, but just hadn't taken the plunge. So one day, we were at the mall and passed a Zales when I remembered I'd wanted to get my mom a birthstone necklace for her birthday. He snuck off and picked out a ring. So yeah, long story short: he proposed in a Zales. People walking past the store were stopping and watching, it was really something else! Haha
  • What great stories! Love them all!
  • @TaylorHam86 I feel like I wouldn't been like that too.  "Honey, that's really sweet, but get up!  The picture lady is waiting!" and actually it's a proposal.  :)
  • DH proposed to me at the top of the Empire State Building on Valentine's Day in 2008.  Totally corny to some of you I'm sure, but we're both NYers and I found it very romantic.   :)    Here's the site I made about it 6 years ago if anyone's interested in the cheezyness:  https://sites.google.com/site/nicoleandshep/

    Hey neighbor! :)
I haven't been to Hoboken in a few months, but I used to go all the time when I was living up at school! Living in Ocean County is very different, and I miss everything about NNJ except the traffic haha.

It’s not that I don’t like you, it’s that I don’t know you. Stranger Danger.

  • I met DH on my 30th birthday in Vegas...we were both shit faced at the bar.  We just hit it off and kept in contact--he lived in the UK and I lived in CA.  We did the long distance/visiting each other back and forth for about 6 months.

In Jan 2012 I came to visit him in the UK and we went to Paris for the weekend; he proposed in Paris.  It was so romantic...I kind of had a feeling it was coming, but didn't say anything.  He was going to propose on top of the Eiffel Tower, but he chickened out cause there were too many people. I'm glad he didn't do it there, I would've been so embarassed.  He ended up proposing the next night on top of the Arc Di Triomphe.  It was just me and him, I liked that much better.

I'm surprised he proposed to me because I was being such a bitch that weekend. When I fly a lot I get constipated and I hadn't pooped in like 5 days, I was miserable.  I finally bought a laxative at a little pharmacy in Paris and had taken half of it before we went out the night he proposed.  By the time we got back to the hotel, it was working...I was literally running through the hall to the room.  After I did the best poo ever, he looked at me and said "good God woman open the god damn window".  How romantic is that?
