Low Amniotic Fluid

I  am avid poster on the April 2014 board and after a complicated week thought I would come over here...

Back in Dec at my routine 20 week check up I was told my fluids look low. I was immediately sent to a specialist and they said they are in fact lower, but still in the normal range. I had to get follow ultrasounds every 2 weeks from end of Dec until end of Jan (had 3 total) and then was released from seeing the specialist because things were looking good. Within 1.5weeks I had my routine checkup with my regular ob/gyn and they did another follow up ultrasound, this took place yesterday. My levels were in the 6cm's. I was then sent immediately to the hospital for a stress test on the baby. After the hour or so of testing, the baby was doing perfect. They were originally worried I would have to possibly deliver soon and was going to put me on a medication to help develop my babies lungs to prepare her. Thankfully she did so well I was released and sent home on bedrest & lots of fluids and go back again Friday morning to see if my levels go back up.

I am of course worried, although she is looking perfectly healthy on all her ultrasounds and test and I am feeling fine- of course I want her to bake as long as possible. They said if my fluid levels don't either stay the same or increase by Friday I will be hospitalized. So now I have to sit and wait until Friday.

Another worry I have is that why does it seem that every time I go to the specialist they say everything looks good and then when I go to the ob/gyn there is always something wrong?? I feel like I am getting conflicting results. When my doctor gave me the low fluid results (which were taken by the tech) I asked him how they could have dropped so much in less then 2 weeks?? I was just feeling great that I was released from the specialist!!

Re: Low Amniotic Fluid

  • Specialists often have more accurate means of measuring so what may look to be in the danger range at the ob office might be in the cautionary range at the specialist. They are also more educated on other things to look at so they might feel you are doing okay, but the ob want the second opinion :)

Keeping my fingers crossed that the baby stays wet!

  • Hoping things stay the same and baby continues to do well. U/s isn't perfect and these measurements can vary based on baby's position and also the quality of the equipment- maybe that explains the difference? Sounds really frustrating! Are they planning to do antenatal testing. I have the opposite problem (polyhydramnios) and get weekly NSTs. Also join us on the bedrest check in!

  • So what is your current number? They may be saying that baby is fine, but the OB is worried about the fluid being low. My AFI hit 3 and I was hospitalized until DD was delivered (early). They really worry about cord accidents when there is such low fluid. It may also indicate a placental insufficiency which would mean the baby isn't getting the nutrients it needs. They have to weigh the risk factors of having to deliver a premature baby or monitor a potentially dangerous situation.
I understand the frustration of the back and forth oh my gosh they are going to deliver today and then nothing. I went through that 3 times before they finally made the call to go ahead and deliver. I really hope you don't get hospitalized, it isn't fun at all  :(
My AFI is being monitored closely with this pregnancy and my one goal (other than healthy baby) is to stay out of the hospital.

  • Thanks ladies.... when I went about 2 weeks ago or less to the specialist I was in the 9cm's. Yesterday at the ob/gyn they told me I was in the 6cm's. Called the ob/gyn today to get a referall to have my followup ultrasound at the specialist. Just waiting for a call back now to schedule.

I just feel like the ob/gyn keeps scaring me and when they send me to the specialist they tell me I am fine! Very nerve wracking!! I would rather just do my ultrasounds at the specialist if they are measuring more accurately as to not freak me out.
