Belly measuring ahead. *update*

I'm 27 weeks today and had my last 4 week appointment. It was the first time my doctor measured my belly. She said I'm measuring 29 weeks rather than 27 and that there seems to be a lot of fluid. She mentioned that it could be caused by GD (was tested today so we will see). I'm having a followup ultrasound per my request regarding a marker on my babies heart. So they are going to check the size of the baby at the ultrasound as well.

I'm not concerned really, esp since my doctor wasn't. But I'm more curious if any of you have measured ahead and what the outcome was?

I've been measuring ahead the whole time but my MW won't change my due date. I'm not really worried about it as the baby will come when it comes. But i passed my GD and my scans turned up nothing so I might be of little help.

Hopefully it's just a fluke and it's nothing and you and baby are well :)

  • Honestly, measuring "ahead" really doesn't mean much.  It could mean a big baby, or lots of fluid, or none of the above and just happens to be the way baby is positioned hence altering the shape/size of your uterus.

This is what I'm thinking. I have a tilted uterus and an anterior placenta. Ultrasound wise she was always on point. I just never thought about it and was wondering what's happened with you other ladies.
  • @kitchencolors good to know! I know if my doctor was concerned she would have sent me for an ultrasound right then. So that's why I didn't worry about it. Glad yours straightened itself out!

We have an u/s Friday to measure baby and fluid because they measured me at 34w for my 28w appointment. We shall see.

  • I measured at 34 weeks fundal height last Tuesday at 27 weeks after measuring ahead the last 3 appointments. LO was in the 52nd percentile at my follow-up A/S at 23 weeks and my fluid was smack dab in the middle of the normal range at a 15. I also passed the GTT with flying colors. LO is fine my utes just huge apparently. Fundal height isn't necessarily an indicator of trouble.
  • I measured a bit ahead the first time & he was born the day before his due date & was very average size.

    Good luck!
  • @HatchetFace did/do you have any symptoms of GD? I've been curious what it feels like. I Know some people have symptoms and some people don't. I doubt I have it, fx!
  • This is really interesting. My doctor told me it's normal to measure a little ahead (I have consistently been about 1.5-3 weeks ahead at every appt). However, I did just have to take my 3 hour GTT after failing the 1 hour. I don't have the results yet. I didn't know until reading this thread that measuring ahead could mean extra fluid, or that extra fluid was a possible effect of GD!

Nope. Not a single one. I failed my 1 hour with a 211 (I seriously felt fine, most people would be feeling pretty awful with blood sugar this high) and was diagnosed on the spot. I got put on insulin last week as it's no longer diet controlled.

Strange! Since I first found out I was pregnant, GD has been a fear of mine. Only because of how picky I am. I will only eat most veggies in smoothies mixed with fruit. And I love carbs. I've seen really healthy eaters struggle with it so I would be screwed! Ha.

When I went in for my 27w check up I was also measuring at 29cm.  My doctor said "your fundal height is perfect" so I replied with "what's perfect?" ...she proceeded to tell me my measurement and said that anything within 2cm either way is normal ... She also said she finds a lot of women between 26-30weeks measure bigger and then they kind of catch up!  I wouldn't worry about it at all :)    HTH!

  • I constantly measured ahead with my last pregnancy and had a growth u/s late in the third tri.  No GD and an average sized 7lb+ baby at 40w1d.

  • Good to know. Thanks ladies!!
  • At my 24 week appointment I was measuring a couple weeks ahead, but at the next one I was right on track. Sometimes all it really means is that baby had a growth spurt, and it will even itself out. Unless you are consistently measuring ahead I wouldn't stress about it.

  • I measured way ahead toward the end of my pregnancy with DS, because of excess fluid.  No GD or anything, just lots of fluid.  Which was very apparent when my water broke.  It went EVERYWHERE.
  • I was told this at my last OB appointment as well. Baby is the exact size he/she is supposed to be right now, so I'm not sure the cause of it. I passed the glucose test so no GD for me. I figure I won't worry unless my doctor tells me I should. Good luck to you!
  • I've been measuring 3 weeks ahead the whole time. No GD and normal weight gain. I think for me it has more to do with having a very short torso/the way I am carrying and baby not having room. I'm going to go with that until Dr. says differently.
  • I wouldn't worry. Some bit of my baby are measuring a week ahead, some a week behind and my fundal height is a week behind. There's still time for things to change at this point.

  • I had GD last time, anterior placenta, measured ahead by 3-4w consistently. Baby just was positioned so that it made me measure ahead. When she dropped at 37w I measured small/behind or whatever. At 38w I was induced & she was 7lbs 13oz. But I got a ton of fluids during my induction so she was probably closer to 7.5lbs or less.

  • I measured ahead consistently throughout my first pregnancy. I'm a big girl so my extra padding factored into the fundal height measurements, but DS also measured ahead on ultrasounds. He was born on his due date, weighing 9 lb 7 oz and was 22 inches long. His head has always been off the charts.

  • I'm so excited! I passed my diabetes test!!! But I am a little anemic so have to start taking more iron. But she said it wasn't dangerously low or anything. Woo hoo! I will celebrate by eating some cake :)

YAY! so happy for you :) I'm slightly anemic too so I just eat more dark green veggies and that makes a difference

Thanks! The only dark green veggie I love is spinach and I eat it almost daily. All the others I will only have them in smoothies because I hate the taste!
  • Yay!  Glad things are looking so much better!

I had my ultrasound today to check her size. She's measuring normal at 2lbs 9oz and in the 46th percentile. Had normal fluid (high normal but normal). Plus her marker on her heart is no longer there. Woo hoo!

Bonus - I got to see a yawn. Loved it!

That is so awesome to hear!! when I went for my gallbladder us they peeked at baby and I saw him gulping amniotic fluid. lol. not as cute as a yawn though! that is seriously adorable :)

    Thanks!
It is huh! It makes them more "human". Lol. I am hoping I get to see her sucking her thumb at my 3d scan.
