Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Start fruit or veggies first...debate

So my pedi yesterday told us to start fruits first then move on to veggies.  I am going to do what he says but my dh has heard and read a lot on the debate of others starting veggies first because once they taste the sweet flavor they will not want veggies.

The other half of the debate is fruits first because they are sweet like bm.  What is your take on it?  What are/did you start first?

  • we did veggies (at pedi's suggestion) but my BF did fruits and both of our babies like both.

  • Are you skipping cereal?  Our pedi told us to start with rice cereal first and then move to fruits/veggies at 6 months.

  • With DD I started Veggies first....our Pedi told us the exact opposite of what yours told you! Interesting!

    ditto

  • I don't think it matters really.  Breastmillk is really sweet, so it's not like they don't know what sweet is until they try fruit.

  • My SIL said she would put a little cinnamon in the veggies.  We're planning on making our own baby food and will mix in BM to thin things out and add the sweetness.

  • We're also doing rice cereal and probably next week will do some oatmeal, then start solids at 6 months, probably avocado first.

Yeppers we are doing cereal.  But I was just wondering what people thought about the fruit thing since we thought it was kinda weird.  I am jumping ahead of myself a little...

  • We started with sweet potatoes, then carrots, then we did fruit. Now we do fruit in the am and veggies in the pm. He didn't stop eating the veggies once he had friut

  • Oh, OK.

I'm going to do a vegetable first, probably sweet potatoes or squash.

  • This was our order:  rice cereal, apples, pears, switch to oatmeal cereal and just started sweet potatoes yesterday.  He loved the sweet potatoes and we're going to try peas next.  I think it also depends on the baby....some are picky, some aren't.  But our pedi had us start with the fruits.  I had the same concern about 'sweet'...he definitely prefers the fruit over cereal, but he seems to like the veggie just as much as the fruit.  Good luck!

  • My ped says start with rice cereal, then either fruits or veggies - saying it doesn't matter which you do.  He says do the rice cereal 3 days in a row, then start with the others, same flavor 3 days in a row to make sure there won't be any sensitivity or allergy issues.  Also, any feedings between 4-6 months are "occupational therapy" not nutritional.  Nutritional feedings would start at 6 months (2 feedings of solids a day).
  • I asked our pedi this same question yesterday afternoon.  She said it doesn't really matter, and to do whatever I feel comfortable with.  So I compromised and gave her sweet potatoes.  But after this, I'm at a loss.  I think I'll try another veggie, maybe carrots and then peas, and green beans.

  • I quoted the wrong dang quote!  Ugh...I must be still feeling sick!
  • We did fruit first for no particular reason and about 2 weeks later I introduced peas. At first he didn't like them but after a few spoonfuls he took right to them. Every baby is different
  • We did rice cereal and oatmeal first, but she hated plain cereal so we mixed in a little fruit to get her to eat it.  Then we went to veggies, which we would give her with plain rice cereal.  Then we started fruits, which we give her with oatmeal.  I don't think there's really any wrong way to do it, but I do think if you intro all the fruits first you might have a harder time with veggies.  Have you thought about alternating fruits and veggies?
