Cutesy nicknames that stick

I've been deep in thought over this one. One of my friends took to calling her daughter Gremlin before birth, and now, nearly 6 years later, I struggle to remember that her given name is not "Grem". I'll also be honest, I can't remember her youngest child's real name, he is now and always has been Peanut to me. I never thought too much about it until getting pregnant with my own LO, and referring to him since the beginning as Sprout. I assumed that once we found out the baby's sex, we'd switch over to calling him or her by name. That might have happened, had Sprout turned out to be Darcy Grace, but he instead is Spencer Rhys, which doesn't exactly lend itself to easy shortening (Spence? Not my cup of tea.). So, I've continued to call him Sprout, as has pretty much everyone else. This poor child may be Sprout until he's a married man.
Do any of you have some weird nickname for your child that is probably going to haunt him/her long into adulthood?

(This is also coming from the woman who is planning on teaching her child to refer to his uncle as "Uncle Booger", since that's what I call him all the time, so I may just be weird.)

  • Not me, but parents have a friend (so someone is her 50s) named Twinkie. She has a real name, but I honestly don't know what it is. Her dad called her this and it stuck. I think it's ridiculous that a grown, professional woman goes by Twinkie (and she uses this name at work).

  • I've been referring to my baby as Donut since the early days, since donuts were all I wanted to eat... Hopefully that NN will fade very soon.

  • we called dd 'Sparky' when she as an inside baby (because she was due near the 4th of July) - we just switched to her name when she was born (we didn't tell anyone ahead of time and we were team green) I didn't think the switch was hard and wouldn't have wanted to keep calling her sparky....

this baby dd named 'Jingle' (she loved the song Jingle Bells this year.....)

It won't be hard for us to start using the real name when baby is born, but I do think it'll take her awhile to get used to not calling him/her Jingle :) But we again aren't telling anyone the name before the birth, so Jingle is is til July!\

Nicknames are a thing we have to REALLY consider when naming a kid here though (Australia) because people LOVE using nicknames, so a few names we wanted were out because of what they'd be called here.

  • I call DD "Goose Goose" or "Dolly Pie". I will probably call her those until I die! ;)

However, I am the only one who calls her that and so it's not *really* a NN.

  • We all call this kid SharkBaby. I don't know what we will use when he/she gets here!

  • granted I do still call dd muffin sometimes - my Mom gave her this REALLY ugly hat when she was a baby, I said it made her head look like a muffin and it stuck

Now she's old enough though that she says 'My name is NOT muffin!' lol

  • I call DS Mr. Man but it bothers me when others call him that. That's my nickname for him X( We do also call him Bud Bud which gets shortened to Bud. Really don't know where that came from, but whatever. His name isn't predisposed to nicknames and he's named after his dad so it can get tricky around our home.
  • We have called DS "cutie" short for "cutie pie" since he was inside and we still do. I din't really consider it a nickname, just a term of endearment. We still call him cutie and he answers to it. No one else calls him that except us.

  • We call our little one "Drip Drop" because of the depiction on her 6 week ultrasound
  • My ds has been squishy since his fatty baby days.

My dd has always called my husband "O" because she couldn't say his name when we met. That's stuck with him even through our friends.

  • We call our little one "Drip Drop" because of the depiction on her 6 week ultrasound

DH also refers to our LO as our little duck, because he looked like a rubber duck in our 8 week US.

@V1981, that makes me think of "And I will call him Squishy, and he shall be my squishy..."

He had that onesie! I'm sure that was somewhere in my head when we started that.

  • Back when we were dating, we decided we liked the name "Preston" for a boy.  Ever since then, we have jokingly referred to our future child as "Presto-Change-o"  (i.e. we would go to an airshow and one of us would say something like "I can't wait to bring Presto-Change-o to this!"  I think God was like "Ok, no."  and that is why we are having a girl ;-)

  • We call LO Pablo because it was the first name on the page that DH opened a book to when first found out we were pregnant. In the baby names books it says Pablo means "little" so we started our Pablo Fiesta as soon as we knew.

If Pablo turned out to be a girl, I'd probably still use it just to embarrass her when she's 12. But since it's looking like boy, it's not nearly as funny.

  • We call DS Bub/Bubba. We've called him this since birth even though he's the only child. All my family calls him that as well. We pretty much only use his given name if he's in trouble. I'm not worried about it considering he really is going to be a Bubba in July. :)

  • My hubby and I referred to DD as "punkin" when I was pregnant with her. We still call her some variation of "punkin" to this day. (Sometimes punkin face and punkin butt. Idk why. Makes no sense haha!!) my parents call her "doodles" or "doodle bug". Again, idk why. Otherwise, no one else calls her by any nicknames

  • I call DS "boo" mostly, or short versions of his name. He is also "monster" and Little/Mr. man, but I'm not sure any of those will stick as he gets older.

I went to school with a kid, Tigger, who I learned many years into school- 5th/6th grade, his name was really Dennis. I never thought anything of "Tigger" either, which is kind of weird to think of now.

I like having short, one syllable nick names, so I'd use Spencer's middle name Rhys, personally:) My cousin does this, Scott to the family, Joe to the rest of the world (long story).

  • Not cutesy but we call DD Millie for Amelia. I actually don't care for the nickname, makes me think of a little old woman, but it's stuck. Also in the hospital DH called her "Momma" and I was so weirded out, but now I find myself doing it too. "Did you give Momma her milk?" So weird....and I used to make fun of people that called their daughters "Sis."  :-\"

  • I call DD baby girl, but if this one turns out to be a girl that will need to change. Besides we want 4 children total so if any of those are girls it'll need to change. DH calls her bayboo, after she was born he held her and went to say my baby and it came out my bayboo, and it stuck. But only he calls her that.

DD is either Emmy or kitten.

DS1 doesn't really like anything but his first name.

    DS2 is chunk lol

ETA: we'll start off calling this little guy max but, I'm sure ill come up with something unique for later.
  • We call the baby Frankie (just because it was a cute nickname and we want to keep the real name a secret) but now family is so attached to that name I bet it'll stick.

  • When my friend was pregnant with her third son, she showed her other boys her U/S picture and the younger boy said the baby looked like a pickle. After we all called the baby Pickle and after he was born to this day he only answers to Pickle.
  • We called DS "baby" because we were team green with him and it felt weird to make up a name. It took a couple weeks to get used to calling him by his real name once he was born, but we definitely don't still call him baby. He has accumulated a LOT of nicknames though, and I'm surprised he knows what his real name is.

We call this babe gummy bear because that's what it looked like at 9 weeks. I also call it babycakes, and that one might actually stick around.
  • We've called the baby peanut since we found out. It's super cute when DH says "Goodnight peanut". I don't think it will stick but you never know.

I grew up with a girl who called her brother Babe. Everyone called him Babe actually and to this day it's what he goes by. His name is actually Chris but it was such a common name, his mom called him Babe and it stuck. He's nearly 30 and owns a business with the name Babe in the title.

  • My little brother, who's 6'4" by the way, is still called Peanut by my dad. In his first ultrasound he looked like the Planters Peanut man and the nickname stuck.

We interchangeably call her many things, usually babygirl, but SO has taken to a few things that all begin with 'sweet' since we found out she was a she! Sweet pea, sweetheart, sweet girl, last week sweet potato, his little sweetie. Don't even think he recognizes the theme but I've picked up on it! I just say my baby girl or my love bug. Sometimes my tiny dancer when she's squirming around. Nothing too permanent yet though :)
  • I call DS munch short for munchkin or little man. DH calls him handsome or boo boos. Idk why we each call him munch or boo boos. I'm sure they won't stick and that's fine. LO2 doesn't have a cutesy name.

We call our baby Frankie, too! We even got it an ornament for Christmas that said "Frankie's first Christmas" and Frankie got a Vday card from the grandparents. :) I actually plan on calling our daughter or son Frankie as a casual nickname, but only occasionally. My best friend actually suggested Frances or Francis as a middle name for the baby since she is so attached to Frankie ;)

  • DS' nickname is punkin. It got shortened from punkin head because of this cute pumpkin hat he wore his first Halloween. It has stuck around ever since and everybody calls him that. I said we needed a nickname for this one or she will feel left out, but no luck yet. :(

  • DH and I refer to DD as "Beebs" often, it just kind of evolved from "baby" to "beebs" while pregnant.  No one else calls her that, or knows about it, for that matter.  We call DD by her full name Rebekah, though I am sure it will get shortened by friends/etc.

BTW I think Spence is very cute.

  • My husband is Cuban and nicknames are very big in his family because everyone has these huge names. His was/is Nene, which means little boy. ALL his family still calls him that but I refuse to call him little boy.

Likewise, we planned on naming our babies big names with easy short names DD is Isolina Louise which became Lina Lou, Lina Lou bunny. But it is tough to find another name for us. I love Lina but no one ever uses her full name and she has no idea that she has more name coming her way.

  • My husband calls DS bubba, which I normally hate when people are called bubba but thats what he likes to call him.  He has had nicknames come and go so who knows if this one will stick.
  • Before I was born, my cousin Greg was the youngest in the family. They called him "The Kid" while in utero and it stuck. We called him TK his entire life (he passed away at 16yo in a train accident). We still call him TK vs. Greg when we reminisce.
