Introducing a bottle..

I'm sorry if this has been asked..

I usually pump in the morning while I'm feeding LO. I've been doing this to build a supply and I wanted to start introducing a bottle once a day so that DH can do a feed in the evenings after work. My question is - do I need to pump while he's giving that bottle? Or is it ok if i just keep pumping in the morning? I find that I can't get anything really if I pump and he's not eating on the other side so I'm worried. Will it mess with my supply if the pumping session doesn't coincide with his feeding?

Re: Introducing a bottle..

  • Yes, I would pump what you give the baby unless you are always going to give a bottle at the same time. Your body will adjust to make less milk at that time because you are not nursing. Like when your baby starts sttn, your body adjusts and you stop becoming engorged when they are consistently doing it and you stop nursing at night. So if you want a stash of extra milk, then yes, pump around the time the bottle is given and freeze the extra milk.

  • I pump around the time he is getting a bottle. But I am also trying to build a stash for work.

  • So @thetheisens the morning pump won't keep my supply up because I'm giving that milk from the morning pump in the evening?
  • We have only successfully given 2 bottles so far, and I pump at the same time. I also have to go into another room or else LO won't let DH feed him.

You will still have the milk in morning, but if you continually give him a bottle at night then you will have a dip in supply then. Which is fine if you always want to give him a bottle then, but if you want to nurse instead you won't have as much milk. You will have enough milk either way, but you will build a bigger stash if you do both times. Basically your boobs have a schedule that coincides with when baby usually nurse during the day. DH give dd a bottle some nights, but some times she refuses or doesn't take much. I pump because I don't always want to have to do a bottle at that time. Make sense?

  • If you don't ever plan to nurse LO at that evening time when he is getting the bottle instead, then you are safe to not pump during that time and just use what you've pumped from the morning. Your body will adjust to when you want it to make the milk. However if you want to keep the option open to still nurse during that time then I'd still pump, so just in case you ever need to nurse at that time then your supply will still be there.
  • Ok ya that makes sense. I'm just nervous because I can't seem to get anything when I pump and he's not latched on the other side. I guess it might just take longer to pump?
