Weight Gain...

How much weight have you Mommy's gained during your pregnancy? I started at 126lbs, I'm 5' 6''. At my 20 week appointment I had already gained 14lbs and was 140lbs. I'm nervous now for my 24 week check up. I'm trying to stay between the recommended 25-35lbs, I try to eat healthy but have had a major sweet tooth and I am still getting some exercise in, however I've gone from being very active to just moderately active.
Any other mama's have this concern? Not sure what to do to keep the weight gain down. I'm hungry ALL OF THE TIME!!

  • If you're that concerned (and your OB is, too), the obvious answer is to eat healthier. Seems self explanatory, but what do I know?
  • Ignore your sweet tooth if you're that concerned.
Exactly. Not all cravings should be indulged. Have you come back to see what anyone has said?
If you go to her profile and click on her discussion, you can see how many replies she hasn't seen.  If there is a new one that she hasn't seen it will show up in a yellow bubble like the threads do.

  • @ellyd14 That's how it works? I always thought it was replies I hadn't seen!

Nope.  You can also see which of their own discussions they've bookmarked.

I wouldn't worry about it. I have a few friends who have gained 50+ and they always bounce back. It doesn't work that way for everyone, but it is possible. As for me, I've gained 6 pounds so far, but I haven't been 126# since 8th grade.

If you must snack, grab protiens. More filling.

I have had GS cookies in my cabinet for a week. I forgot about them. Eh.

  • I wish I only weighed 126 lbs pre-pregnancy or had only gained 14 lbs so far..... yep I'm 0 for 2 there but my Dr.'s not worried so I am not.

  • I ate not one but TWO giant bowls of triple chocolate Dryers gelato and it was AWESOME! Just sayin' not really relevant but oh well I didn't have anything else to say...oh and I did it because the baby wanted it lol and I probably gained a pound but I don't care :P
  • Talk to your doctor. They may recommend a nutritionist. Your body has to gain weight for the baby. Talk your doctor. Talk to your doctor. Talk to your doctor.
  • Cut back on sweets, move more and relax.
  • What @chickpea912 said. I'm smaller to start with, have gained more, and have major food aversions (no sweet tooth) and my OB is really concerned. So I'm doing exactly what he says, eating what he tells me to, not eating what he says not to. Because he's my doctor, I trust him, and I don't want GD. I suggest you talk to your doctor and do what he/she says.

  • Twice in the last 3 weeks I have gotten a large blizzard from DQ and eaten the whole thing in one sitting.  The red velvet cake Blizzard of the Month is to die for!

Wow. This thread hurts. As someone who has been eating healthy and has gained a lot already, I hope we can be kinder than to suggest only that all weight gain happens because people eat too much and are lazy. Even if you're trying to snark at the OP, that attitude is pretty harmful to put out there and show other women on the board. This feels shaming to others. There are plenty of women on this board struggling with EDs and weight gain brings hard stuff up, even in pregnancy. Bodies are different. They handle things differently. Very few guidelines actually produce the same results or side effects across the board.
While I totally understand what you are saying and agree with what you have to say, I really don't think the purpose of anyone's comments were to weight shame anyone, just merely responding to the OP who wonders why she is gaining so much or how to control it but in the same breath comments that she is indulging in sweets and whatever she wants.  It seems kind of obvious that if you would like more control over your gain, try changing your eating habits.  Not saying that this would have the effect that she wants, but that would kind of be a first step that I think most people could come to the conclusion to try, given the information she provided.

Just as an example, this weekend I was out of town at an event at a hotel, so I ate (for lunch and dinner, both days) big burgers with bacon and cheese and a huge side of fries. For breakfast, Starbucks frappuchinos and chocolate chip cookies. I also went through a 1lb bag of almond M&M's and a double chocolate brownie for a snack. I weighed myself yesterday morning: same weight as the day i left.

Last week at home (where my typical daily diet is 1 1/2 cup of vegetables per day, 2 pieces of fruit or a pint of berries, half a cup of black coffee, a nonfat fage yogurt, and a chicken breast, and a half cup of breyer's ice cream for dessert), I gained two pounds.

So, really, i do think (and science often shows!) that bodies just do whatever they need to at any given time and it's not based on a direct calories in/calories out or "sweets=weight gain" sort of metric.

I've found this true, as well.  The amount of weight I gain or don't gain in any given 1-2 weeks period does not seem directly related to my food intake and/or amount of exercise.

I don't think the comments in here are too harsh, but I can totally appreciate what @wtfisup is saying.  It's a slippery slope, especially when we really don't know what the OP is eating every day.

Definitely not my intention. I've struggled with my weight my entire life and I would never shame another for their weight. She asked how she could try to avoid gaining what she feels is excess weight but also mentioned her decreased activity and her sweet tooth. I think many just felt it was obvious that if she was worried she would try to be more active and ignore the sugary cravings she's having. That doesn't mean it will help her not to gain what she feels is too much weight, but it could certainly help. The body will gain what it needs.

It was 2 halves actually... Cookies n Milk and PB&J.

    image

Oh also, my favorite B&J is half-baked-- their half cookies and cream and half fudge brownie. Was your pint a mixed one or is what you're telling me that you still have two half pints of PB&J and Cookies and Milk at your home??
Not any more! :) And yes, agreed.  The snark was to say that obviously you are going to gain weight which is why the average is 25-35 lbs.  And at her (and my stage) in the pregnancy we should have gained about 14 lbs to stay in that average, so she's right on track. A little research or even just looking and the Weigh-In thread could have told her that.  While I can appreciate women who struggle with their weight regardless of being pregnant (I being one of them) and this being a sensitive issue, I would have to say a 5'6 126 lbs person does not understand what weight problems are...  Besides, my doc says this is the only time in life women are 'allowed' to splurge. So take advantage honey and go back to the gym/diet after LO is born!

  • It honestly sounds like you are doing fine with your weight gain. I don't think there is any reason to feel bad about your sweet tooth or exercising a little less. 14 pounds sounds about right, give or take. And if your doctor is not worried, then there is no reason for you to be.

True, but humblebragging to a bunch of strangers isn't very nice either.

    Also very true.
