Pregnant after a Loss

Anyone with PCOS?

DH and I had barely gone to a consultation with an RE before our BFP. We were supposed to start fertility testing in December, and one of the things we were looking at was starting Metformin because they think I may have PCOS. We aren't officially patients of the R.E. yet, so I'm not sure what info I might be missing. or now, I have to rely on my OB, whom I don't really trust or like.

Of course, now I'm worried about whether or not our little peanut is going to make it. Any thoughts?

Re: Anyone with PCOS?

  • I haven't been to an RE and I've heard conflicting things so take this with a grain of salt.  I've seen 3 different OB's.  With my first OB, I had my first mc.  It was natural at 6 weeks.  After that, my period didn't come back so she wanted me to start metformin to regulate my cycles (or lack thereof).  Before I started taking it, I had gotten pregnant but didn't realize it.  I took a hpt when I got home from that appointment where she prescribed it b/c I wanted to make sure I wasn't pregnant before I started a new med.  It was positive.  I started the metformin (it made me feel awful).  I mc'd again but at 12 weeks that time (missed mc, baby stopped growing at 8).  I had moved during that 12 weeks and switched OB's.  My first appointment with him was where they found no heartbeat.  He said that it was old information and that once I was pregnant, I didn't need the metformin anymore.  I was skeptical.  I had the d&c with him and then switched OB's again b/c I didn't really like him.  So before I could meet with my new OB (who is amazing and I trust what he says 100%), I got pregnant again.  I started the metformin immediately.  That was at about 7 weeks.  I saw the new OB at 9 weeks and he said the same thing, that I didn't need to be on the metformin to sustain the pregnancy.  He said I could stay on it if I wanted to but that it wasn't necessary.  I decided to stop taking it b/c it made me feel awful and I'd heard this from 2 different OB's.  That pregnancy was fine.  I had my son right on time and he was perfect.  So I know this is probably confusing but I thought maybe it would make you feel a little bit better since you're already pregnant.  Maybe the metformin is used to help you get pregnant?  Congrats on your BFP!

  • I was diagnosed with PCOS at 18 and my ob put me on metformin and birth control to help regulate my cycles. When we decided we wanted to ttc, I went off the birth control but remained on the metformin and started charting. My cycles were anywhere from 30 to 40 days and I had a very short luteal phase (usually 5-9 days instead of the normal 14). I was ovulating, but they were very weak. (Without the metformin, my cycles were 60-90 days.) We used clomid to get pg with both of our babies and my ob kept me on metformin until 12 weeks.

I'm not sure if there is a way to tell if you have PCOS once you are already pregnant, but the fact that you were able to get pregnant on your own is a good sign. How far along are you now?

  • Thank you both for your responses!

jbranden, I'm not positive, since FF never gave me CH this cycle, but I'm guessing I am just barely 5 weeks. No doctor has ever tested me for anything officially, but I've had a number of annovulatory/long (we're talking minimum 90 days)  cycles before and after my loss.  I'll definitely bring up my concerns with the doc tomorrow, though.

  • I have PCOS and have been on and off of Metformin (my own fault because I am terrible about taking meds).  They helped regulate my cycles and made them more manageable, less bleeding and less painful cramps.  Ironically both times I got pregnant I was not taking Metformin.  The first time I started taking Metformin right away and still miscarried (I believe there was something wrong with the pregnancy from the beginning and nothing I did made me lose the baby and nothing could have prevented it either). This time I did not start taking Metformin and everything has been perfectly normal.

  • I've never heard of taking Metformin when you are already pregnnat. I did take metformin before getting pregnant with this pregnancy along with clomid to conceive and my doctor had me continue the Metformin until the end of the first trimester only because he didn't want to change any of my meds during the first trimester. For what it's worth with my first pregnancy I didn't know I had PCOS yet and I didn't take Metformin and I didn't have a miscarriage. I did lose my son later but it was not anything that Metformin would have effected.
