Breastfeeding

Anyone else's baby choke a lot?

It seems like almost every feeding my LO chokes on my breastmilk and scares mama to death. I'm wondering if my letdown is too fast for him or if he forgets what he's doing and doesn't swallow correctly. Or something else?

Does this happen to anyone else?

  • I had a forceful letdown and OS. Like PP, time was the biggest factor.

  • Yep! I have a forceful let down. I pull him off and let the milk squirt into a burp rag. I can squirt it pretty far and am quite amused by it.
  • Same here takes time as they get bigger they can handle it sometimes there's not much you can do and make sure you burp good because with swallowing so fast they can get a lot of air sometimes and be gassy!
  • @boyohboys I had to laugh because I was just trying to relieve my letdown and while it was shooting a good 4-5 inches out he was laying back with his mouth open and I seriously considered trying to fountain to his mouth lmao my poor child
  • @rocknrollfriend @boyohboys and others... How do/did you keep LO calm while you expressed the letdown? It seems to help with his choking but he throws a holy terror fit while he waits.

Sorry, I don't remember my LO being quite so mad. For me it was only a few seconds until the intial fountain subsided and I could latch him back on.

This!!! You would think I never feed him, when all I ask is for him to wait 30 seconds while I spray down the house!!!! Lol I guess he will live. He yells until I pop it into his mouth... Then forgets about it.
  • mrsdahamm He is usually okay. It only takes a couple seconds and it makes me laugh which usually gets a smile out of him. Otherwise he just roots and kicks.
