That is great news! I'm glad to hear you've got a plan to work with, without all the worry.
I agree.  When I asked the Ped at our 9 month appt, he said crawling isn't a milestone and sometimes babies skip it all together and go straight for walking.

May I ask what they recommend for PT?
  • That is wonderful news :)

I have no idea what they are going to recommend in PT. He discussed working on W's center of gravity and on teaching us some exercises to do with W.

  • So, W started army crawling Saturday. I am pretty excited. Still doesn't pull up on things and stands on his tip toes when we support him (the big reasons his doctor was worried).

He had his first PT appt today. The therapist evaluated his gross motor skills (balance, movement, reflexes, etc.). The tests determined that his ambulatory movement is delayed but overall he is fine (Hooray!). We were given exercises to do at home and return next month.

    Two of the main exercises:

    - Standing W up and applying downward pressure to his hips to help him flatten his feet. He didn't seem to mind that one.
    - Stair exercise- have W kneeling on a step to get his hips and feet aligned in a position conducive to crawling. This can also be done using a box or something sturdy that provides some height. He did this using a box at PT and tolerated it well.

I'm looking forward to seeing how W progresses. I know his doctor was being proactive and I'm trying to remember that it doesn't matter if I am scared/worried as long as W gets the care he needs.

Thanks again for being here and being supportive. I'll update with any progress.

  • Hey ladies. I am asking for your support, advice, whatever you can give. My son had his 9 month appointment today and for the first time I heard his doctor say, "I am extremely concerned." When W jumps in his jumperoo or does the whole "supported standing" thing, he is often (mostly) on his tiptoes or the balls of his feet. He doesn't pull up on furniture or scoot along it. He isn't crawling but rolls everywhere.

His doctor said that she "hated to say it, but ..." then mentioned spasticity and the possibility of cerebral palsy. At that point I asked if I should be freaking out (because I was/am freaking out). She said that she "could see that [I] was thinking about wheelchairs and things like that" and shouldn't do that. She referred him to a specialist. I am now waiting for a phone call with a date/time for that appointment.

Has anyone gone through this? I don't even know how to frame what type of advice/thoughts/etc. I am looking for. I don't know what questions to ask, but if you've got any encouraging words/stories/etc., I could use them right about now. TIA.
2/17: The specialist had a cancellation today so we got to see him this afternoon. It was a good appointment. This is what we learned: - W's gross motor skill development is delayed (not pulling up on things, not pulling himself up to sit, not crawling) but not to the point that the specialist was hearing alarm bells. He pointed out that all babies progress at different rates and W is progressing slowly. - The doctor expects W to start walking late (18 months) based on where he is now. - The doctor is having W start physical therapy to help him work on the things mentioned above. - The doctor doesn't feel we need to be alarmed about cerebral palsy (big sigh of relief). - W will go back to the specialist in 6 months to monitor his progress. I am feeling very relieved and look forward to W starting PT soon. I will keep you posted on his progress. Thank you all for your support. It means a lot to me. I don't know what I would do without our BMB (cheesy, I know, but true).

My DS appt was similar actually but maybe not as extreme. My LO can sit on his own once I sit him down but he hasn't really been able to get to a sitting position on his own yet and by his 9 month appt he wasn't really trying to crawl (but actually crawled about 2 days after seeing pedi.) Well at the appt the fill pedi was there (my regular doctor was away) and saw that when I sat him down on the table it lean back and slip and couldn't support himself. Well I got mad at her mention it because DS was looking up at the damn stickers on the ceiling and at the doctor and when he did the paper on the table moved and ya he couldn't hold himself up. Well needless to say she wanted me to come back to see my regular pedi because she was worried about muscle issues. For piece of mind I already have an appt. but like I said my DS isn't standing or pulling up or sitting on his own, and he just started crawling because up until now he hated being on his stomach. Also when I stand DS up he gets on his tiptoes, but once he gets going with us he flattens out. I have been putting heavy shoes on him with like a traction bottom (from WalMart) and he doesn't tip toe as much. Also I got some knee pads (Babies r' us) at my baby shower and that actually helped him crawl. So if your still really worried maybe you could try those two things?

TundraGirl Just keep on eye on your son sounds like the specialist isn't worried so don't stress yourself out. Our babies will do things when they are ready!

  • @aintnoyuppiemom- I am sorry the fill in pedi is causing you so much worry and stress. I hope your regular pedi can give you some more conclusive answers.

The kneepad idea sounds great, thank you! The physical therapist recommended not using shoes for W. She recommended allowing him to stand on his bare feet so he can feel the floor. Maybe she thinks he's a tactile baby?

Thank you for sharing your experience. Please let me know how the appt with your regular pedi goes. GL!

I will absolutely keep you informed I think his apt isn't until the 28th of march, another reason why I wasn't to worried she wanted me to wait six weeks. Please keep us informed on any new developments or private message me since we are kind of going through something similar. I hope the knee pads work for you! Huh I didn't know that about the shoes? Well I do not use them all the time so maybe for now I will just keep alternating. GL
