I am really wanting to CD but my DH is reluctant. More than the gross-ness factor, he is in sticker shock. I try to explain how CD can save TONS of $$ in the long run, but he just isn't there. I think starting out we will be in disposable diapers and then try out CD here and there. Hopefully I can convince him of the benefits and get 100% on board with it.
How about this sticker shock: I added up what I would have spent according to people I know who use disposables. Compared to that I saved about $1000 with dd who is almost 3. When I am done with this baby, I'm looking at $3000 minimum in savings total between the two. And I bought BG and FB which are about $17/diaper. You can always pick up one or two diapers at a time. Or check out Kawaii which are much cheaper and from the couple I have just as good as the more expensive ones.
I use prefolds in the newborn stage, and added some Happy Flute NB AIOs this time. Then pockets for the OS stage.
We are planning on it this time around. I've got an array of different diapers. BG pockets, free times and nb size. Some thx, g diapers, groVias, TT's.
My question is...we are planing on circumsizing our son. But I'm not sure how to care for it and protect the cloth diapers..
We're going to cloth diaper starting with prefolds and covers and a few AIOs/pockets. We'll see how we like those and build our stash from there. One thing that I'm not quite clear on is the washing regimen for soiled diapers for babies who aren't on solids yet. My understanding: Rinse (cold, warm, or hot?), then standard wash cycle (hot)? Do you need to rinse twice after the wash cycle? I've read good things about tide original powder detergent and CDs. Do any of you experienced ladies care to share your wash routine?

I have a question and please forgive my ignorance. What do you do when you are out and about? Say at a relative's house or shopping? do you toss it in a plastic bag and take care of it when you get home? that's the part im struggling with regarding my decision. Thanks!

You can get small wetbags to keep in your diaper bag. Our plan is to have a couple of AIOs or pockets on hand for that purpose because with those ones, you don't have to take anything apart, it's just like changing a disposable. The whole thing goes into the wetbag and you can deal with it at home.

you'll need a couple wetbags. Go to amazon and type wetbag, it willcome right up. These seal in sink and make it clean to cloth on the go
I am very interested in starting CD. What's a. Great website to check out? I wish I would have done it with our first to make the cost savings very significant, but I'd still be saving money using on 1 baby.

this will only be a a concern for a couple days.
So disposables are not necessary for that time?
I've read its possible to use CD. I've seen people put a make up pad with some vaseline on it, then put that on the head to act as a barrier. Maybe someone will have some real life experience to share We're doing disposables for the first two weeks anyway, so I didn't research it intensely.
We're definitely CDing- right now we're planning on mostly gmd prefolds and thirsties covers, with some gmd workhorses for overnights, and assorted os pockets for daycare.
I was going to use tide powder, but heard that the new formula with the "acti-lift" crystals causes leaks and holes on cds. Anyone have any experience with this?

Get a wetbag. It's like a ziplock that's made of waterproof cloth. You wash it with the diapers. (I have 3-4 actually) I sometimes use disposable liners, which is like a thick piece of toilet paper that catches the poop. You can flush them, if it's not a septic system.
We are planning on cloth too. I've got my NB stash largely built up with GMD prefolds and WHs. We got a bunch of kawaii OS on Black Friday too. I'm looking forward to it for crunchy reasons, and DH is on board for the savings! I'm a bit obsessed, spending hours researching and wanting all the diapers!
For those with money concerns... this is what I worked out:
$0.22/diaper x approx 8/day (more when they are newborns... less as they get older) x 365 days x 2.5 years til potty training
disposables = roughly $1600
My stash cost 1/2 that amount - $800 (including accessories- wetbags, pail liners, diaper sprayer)
and I will be using it for at least two children... so the savings is almost $2500
I have a bunch of brand name diapers, AIOs, and pocket diapers. If I had my time back, I'd have probably gone with fewer of those and used my prefolds/covers. A good stash of prefolds/covers can be built for about $300 birth to potty.
We are doing hybrid so covers and a mix of compostable inserts and cloth ones since DH is freaked out about everything except the cost. He is on board for the cost savings but is still envisioning poop everywhere and in the washer and all over our clothes (to which I tell him that happens regardless) so baby steps

If it's a huge deal to your DH, get some of these:
(You can wean him from them later when he realizes it's not that gross! ) They are cheaper than the compostable inserts and catch the poop
EDIT: I guarantee you that I don't have poop on my clothes Also, any poop before baby starts solids is liquid anyway, so you don't even need to spray before then
We are planning to CD. It will be our first so a lot of trial by fire learning, I think!
Same here. I have to say that the youtube video series that was shared previously was so helpful. I am still anxious about it though. Our childcare class says that they'll cover changing both types, so that will help ease my mind I hope.

Dear Son born 5/28/14
I will be ordering my pockets from a family friend who makes them this week she will also be our childcare provider, so I know that I won't meet any resistance there - the inlaws are another matter but TBH I don't really care. We will be getting 20 OS and probably ordering 10 or so NB. I am not averse to using sposies if necessary so hoping to get by with less than 3 dozen dipes (and YHL has given me hope that I don't need 20 million of the things. This may be naive but I am hoping it works - it would help make CDing more cost efficient). I like that pockets seem really easy and convenient, and would consider looking into AIOs too.
We are planning to CD our LO as well! Our NB stash will mostly consist of GMD prefolds, workhorses, Kissaluvs fitteds and covers (Thirsties and Bummis). We are getting some AIOs and AI2s, as LO will be going to daycare when I go back to work. DH also really likes the idea of using AI2s.
Our OS stash will most likely consist of fitteds, covers, pockets and BG AIOs.
My questions have to do with washing/prepping CDs as well as absorbency.
Is there a certain detergent that you all prefer? We bought All Free and Clear to wash the baby's clothes but I'm not sure if this is CD safe.
Do you wash microfleece just once? Or do diapers have to be washed a few times before use?
A coworker offered to lend me her NB stash to use, as it's a decent chunk of change and they outgrow them quickly. Any issue with taking used dipes?
What do you recommend for inserts/doublers? I've heard hemp and bamboo liners are way more absorbent than fleece, but it seems like most pockets come with fleece liners.

I've read that 15-24 is fine, depending on how frequently you want to do laundry. 24 should be good for every other day washing. You can always get some more if you end up needing more frequent changes.
well...we're gonna try. DH is a little grossed out, and Peanut may object...we'll see how it goes.
The H being grossed out seems to be a common concern. Variations on "that's the washer that's used for my clothes and you're going to put poopy diapers in it?!?!!"
Here are my thoughts on that issue (maybe they'll help give you or someone else new angles on how to approach it with your H):
1) I like that when poop does go into the washer, the wash routine is a specific one aimed at removing the poop and pee and getting things clean. I'm never washing a changing pad with poop on it or a onesie with poop with actual clothes. Poopy stuff gets washed with poopy stuff.
2) Poop only goes in the washer when it's still water soluble newborn poop. After that it goes in the toilet, where poop belongs. It doesn't get touched... it gets sprayed off.
3) Diapers are gross sometimes. Babies poop and pee all over and it can be really disgusting. It's not the diapers... it's the poop and pee.
Thanks for the helpful debate points. I convinced him to try by showing him the potential money savings. Yo I should have seen his pupils dialate in excitement!
Ah! I didn't catch this thread until now. I feel like I'm late to the party for some many of these fun things lately.
I knew we were going to CD before I knew I was pregnant. lol. When my sister was expecting she was kind of interested in trying it, so I did so much research for her and I became obsessed. She didn't end up going with cloth, but I kept all my research on hand, luckily.
My husband is totally fine with it, he gets that the 'gross' part is the poop, not the diaper. He also likes the money savings. He is more into the idea of pockets and AIO's, but I think once he has the chance to try all the different kinds (our new born stash is prefolds, flats, fitteds and a couple AIOs) he might realize they all have their pros/cons.
Yay Cloth Diapering Moms!
ETA: My husband is so curious/supportive of CDing that one of his co-workers that just had a baby last year uses G-Diapers and he's always chatting with her about it. Now he's recommending we give those a try too (with washable inserts, not the disposables). I've made my husband a true convert I guess.

You may need more NB size or else have to put quite a bit into NB sizes of disposables, depending on how long it takes your LO to fit into OS. NBs can go trough 15-18 diapers a day. I ended up needing 40 in order to comfortay wash every other day, and I still spent the same amount on my NB stash as I did on the first 3 weeks of disposables before I decided to CD and got everything ordered and prepped.
We've been CDing DD since 3 weeks, since I decided, once she was born, that I wanted to, so I took me some time to research, order, and prep. So, months of preparation isn't necessary, if you decide to go for it late in the game. Not going to lie, we do it for the money savings. And cuteness factor. I was never met with any resistance because I never told anyone ahead of time (other than DH, of course, and he had no problem with it), and once she was here and we were already using them, people saw how similar to disposables pockets/AIOs really are.
I CD'd DS1 once he was able to fit in OS diapers (skipped the NB phase, but he was big so it was only about 2 weeks). That allowed his umbilical and circumcision to heal without me needing to worry about barriers to protect the diapers, and stopped me from needing 2 separate stashes.
This time, I'm planning to start once we get home from the hospital. I have a bunch of GMDs and covers, and I've been splurging on Twinkie Tush teenie fitteds because they are adorable, everyone at TT is awesome, and I can't help myself. I also think that fitteds just work really well for NB poo.
I'm not sure how long we'll be able to keep it up this time though. We're moving overseas at the end of the year, and it will depend on what type of housing we get. I don't fancy doing CD laundry in a tiny european all-in-one washer/dryer. But we'll see what we have when we get there.
DS1 is still in CDs, though we've cheated and started just using them at home for the past few weeks, because I've just been too tired to do laundry that frequently and I didn't want to let them sit for a week at a time.

Thanks!
I would make sure you use a powder detergent. I know tide makes a F&C powder if you don't want to use the original.
I ran our MF through the wash cycle (including drying) 3 times.
Used diapers are great, but I prefer to do a bleach wash on them just to know their cleanliness. Make sure to do lots of rinses after if you do bleach.
Yup! I get to diaper this LO for practically free since I'll be using DD's diapers.
This is pretty much us except I paid to send all my velcro diapers off to get converted to snaps since I have since learned that I hate velcro.
ETA: The dads and folks that have a gross factor about washing poop and pee in the washer where you do laundry: are you planning on throwing out every single outfit that gets pee, poop or vomit on it or will you wash it in the same washing machine where you do laundry?
I am also a firm believer that the "use a tiny bit of detergent" thinking is just awful and you should use a normal amount that you would for the size of the load. This is after a year or so of trial and error with different detergents and amounts.
So microfleece, wash just once and a full dryer. Organic cottons, hemp/bamboo...have to be washed several times to prep to get the excess oils out and increase the absorb.
Circumcision: Just get some gauze from the hosp, put some vas on it and cover the head of the penis, this will protect the penis and the diaper.
Ideal number of dipes: NB you're going to want to have roughly 36 changes. If you're doing prefolds then you'll want 4-6 covers. For OS you'll need roughly 24 changes...this is for EOD washing. If you want to stretch it out more than that, then you'll need closer to 30 changes. I myself like to have a buffer. I have 45NB changes and plan to have around 36-40 OS changes. You don't need to do this, but I don't like cutting it close.
Inserts and Doublers: I prefer charcoal bamboo inserts, so absorbent and you don't have to worry about staining.
Keep in mind if you're doing compostable inserts, you still need to dump poop...don't compost that. You also need to actually compost them not put them in a landfill in order for them to be eco efficient. Which means buying a composter.
You will have poop in your washer at many points during babyhood regardless of how you diaper. To be honest when you cloth you're more equipped to deal with it, being that you may have a sprayer and an already figured out wash routine to deal with poop. I can't take you what kind of damage diaper blow outs can cause. Washing whole bedding sets (You don't just throw them away when you get crap on them) Clothes will get poop on them, you will get poop on you. Kids are gross, they are lucky they are cute.
I CD DD & am stoked to have my stash all set for #2 (although I'll still pick up a few things here & there).
@mrskten I use regular Tide. Most mainstream detergents will work fine, but you may have to experiment a little with your routine. I know some use All F&C with no problem.
I only wash microfiber & other synthetic fibers once to prep. I boil natural fibers like cotton, bamboo & hemp instead of running multiple washes to get the natural oils out.
If you're receiving used diapers, a bleach soak is recommended just to make sure they're clean.
Re: inserts use all kinds, but prefer natural fibers. Most of my pockets came with microfiber, but I've been slowly replacing them with hemp & bamboo as I can afford it. I also have some cotton pre folds I stuff with.
Re: wipe solution, I used plain water in a peri bottle until recently. Now I add a few drops of Dr. Bronner's soap sometimes.
My wash routine: cold rinse/no spin, hot wash heavy duty cycle w/extra rinse. Dry all inserts & line dry covers & wetbags.
Re: poop on your clothes. If that happens, you're doing it wrong. Think of it this way, if there is still poop in your washer after your diapers are done, then your diapers aren't clean. The poop gets rinsed out in the pre-rinse (before solids) or sprayed/scraped/plopped off in the toilet first, so you run an entire cycle without poop or pee to clean your diapers.
I just finished reading through all of the Q and A's and I thought of one I have been kind of putting off until closer to actually using my diapers, but I might as well ask now:
Laundry detergent (I know, opening a can of worms), some people swear by good old fashioned Tide (or maybe it's Tide Free & Clear) and others are firmly in the "CD safe" detergent camp.
What do others recommend? I've heard so much from both sides it's confusing.
If it helps, most of our newborn stash is GMD prefolds and some cotton flannel flats. I've heard stuff like that really doesn't need special CD detergent.
Last laundry question: For covers, do you need special detergent? Since they are mostly PUL and aren't actually absorbent so there is no worry about build-up/repelling. I was just planning to wash everything together (after the prepping stage).
Keep in mind if you're doing compostable inserts, you still need to dump poop...don't compost that. You also need to actually compost them not put them in a landfill in order for them to be eco efficient. Which means buying a composter.
And doesn't it have to be some sort of special composter in order to make it safe to compost human waste? I mean it's not like you can just take them out with the food scraps and turn the pile every few weeks and it will compost...
ding ding. you have to compost it in a contained composter. Honestly I think most people misuse these the way they misuse sposies.
RE washing: Everyone swears by their routine and the soap they use. I honest to God think it is one of those things you're going to have to figure out. We use free and clear and every once in a while get rid of any build up with a vinegar wash and blue dawn run. BUT* I've also used Rockin Green and that crap is amazing too. I have also made my own detergent. I've become a little lazy and it honestly doesn't work any better than the free n clear.
