Are you planning to cloth? I feel like there have been a lot of newbs wanting to lately coming out of the woodwork. Lets have a question and answer session. And please I don't want responses like "no way, why would you, that is gross" It doesn't help, if you aren't planning to cloth stay out. But if you are and you have questions, lets do this. I'll bump the post for a few days.

It's really no grosser than disposables, though. One of the videos in the CD101 series talked about how solid poop is not supposed to go into a landfill so technically, you are supposed to be scraping that out of any diaper not just the cloth ones. That was news to me and pretty much levels the playing field, IMO. Once the solids are out, it doesn't seem too bad to spray/rinse them and then toss them into the machine.

Me

FTM so this baby is a test for us hahaha But I've pretty much finished off our newborn stash and have started on a small baby stash. I figured I wouldn't finish off the baby stash until I got a feel for it during the newborn stash. Maybe I'll like one thing or hate one thing I didn't think I would?

This is very smart thinking. NB stage is definately time to play around with different styles and figure out what you like.

I agree. My son's immunologist thinks that the world is in trouble in a few hundred years when the disposible dipes decompose in the landfills. Most people don't realize you're supposed to flush the solid wastes. He thinks that the world is going to experience another plague.

Oh, I thought of a question! Is a diaper spray and/or a pre-rinse cycle necessary before solids are introduced? One of the blogs I read said that a quick rinse in the sink was enough before tossing into the wet bag.

this is a personal preference. I tend to spray everything. But I also love my bac out a little too much as well. I also spray, because I don't like dealing with light staining and I find I get less stuff that needs to be sunned if I spray.

EDIT: The spraying is optional, not the rinse. You want the rinse, otherwise you're washing in poop and you don't want that.

We are

I'm pretty excited about it and have done a lot of research, but have been lazy and not bought anything yet. I'm a slacker. We're going with BG newborns and elementals (a stash of 24 of each to start). I think the all-in-one approach will be the best way to getting DH and other family members on board, and I like that we can still customize absorption by adding inserts. And, I'm a fan of their return policy if the fit doesn't work for us.

I plan to cloth diaper I do with DS1 I use charlie banana diapers and CJ's BUTTer for cream. I just bought a bunch of Alva Baby diapers for this LO. I am deeply in love with Planet Wise wet bags

Woot Woot CDs! I love that so many May mommas are joining the train. Stash is "complete" in regards to the amount of diapers, but I mean, is it ever really complete?

I actually am on the WL for some custom LB dipes, but who knows when they'll be done since she's on maternity leave for a bit. I'm just glad I listened to ABC and got the Harry Potter ones before her shop etsy shop closed!

DH and I plan to CD and it was his idea. I have 48 O/S pockets in various brands to try all washed, stuffed and in the changing table. We also made 110 cloth wipes. Not only will it be pretty cost-effective (we plan on having more than 1 LO if we can) but I had pretty severe skin allergies as a child and we're thinking that cloth would be the least irritating to possibly sensitive skin.

I started with cloth when my son was a little older because of skin issues. It made a ginormous difference.

Good!! The only "smart and sensible" thing I'm having a hard time with is buying gender neutral stuff! Since this is our first, I plan on using these again with other babies. But all the cute super girly prints are soooo tempting!

Thankfully I have an on board husband. He isn't too grossed out though I think he will need more instruction since I've done most of the research. In laws are pretty on board. My parents will probably never attempt a CD change.

I make my own. There area bunch of different recipes though. I'm interested in seeing what other moms are doing. I use a wipes warmer and just pour some right on in. For our and about I put it in a spray bottle and bring dry wipes.

you should splurge on a few gender specific things. You can always sell them if your next LO is a boy and put them toward boy patterns. I think it is smart to get most GN, but it is too much to expect yourself to get no girly prints.

Turns out I was cloth diapered as a baby because I had horrific rashes from the available disposables. As a result I have a lot more support from my parents for CDing than I expected.

DH is behind the idea 100%. We will wait to do the big purchase of fluff until after the shower. But we already know what we want

So, definitely yes to the rinse. Is running the prefold under the sink sufficient or do you just do it in the machine before the actual wash cycle?

Me me me me me!!!! I had a friend yesterday who was all "I just thank heavens for disposables!!!" After I picked my eyeballs up (they rolled out of my head) I was all "I just thank heavens that I'm not throwing thousands of dollars in the diaper pail!" I'm irrationally aggravated with her for multiple reasons anyway, but that's another story.

I spent most of my afternoon on the CD swap on FB and on diaperswappers looking for ways to enhance my stash, since right now all I have are 15 OSBG 3.0's

Yes! We are going to use Gdiapers and Charlie Bananananas (sorry, can't resist). I'm hoping to phase in some others over time. Just gotta get DH onboard with cloth inserts instead of disposable.

Buy one pack of disposable inserts and use them for a week, he'll be on board when he sees how much they bunch up compared to cloth inserts.

I am really wanting to CD but my DH is reluctant. More than the gross-ness factor, he is in sticker shock. I try to explain how CD can save TONS of $$ in the long run, but he just isn't there. I think starting out we will be in disposable diapers and then try out CD here and there. Hopefully I can convince him of the benefits and get 100% on board with it.

I literally do not know a soul who CD's in real life. - Covers: wool (1 - for extra night protection), GroVia hook and loop (5)
I also registered for a couple of wet bags and some disposable wipes, although I've read that many CD'ers recommend just using cloth wipes as well, since it can all go in the wash together. I think disposable wipes can certainly come in handy when on the go for a variety of things outside of diapering, but what are y'all's thoughts?

Disposable wipes def have their place, you use them for so much more than bums and they are bio friendly for the most part.

I looked at your list and I think you're fine. You want about 36 NB changes and 24 OS changes, but what you have in those amounts would be great. Also...you might want to consider some covers for those prefolds.

We're going to give it a try. A girlfriend of mine just had her 2nd (and last) in January, and offered her NB stash to me when our baby arrives so I can try them out. I don't know exactly what she has, but I think they're all pocket dipes. I might pick up a few of my own when the time gets a little closer. I can see how it can be a slippery slope and I would want to buy ALL THE DIAPERS! Just trying to be practical until I decide if it's really something we really want to invest in. DH needs some convincing.

I just hope all you CD veterans stick around on the boards when these babies arrive, because I'm sure I'll have questions then!

sticker shock is a real thing. I had to start cloth out of nowhere because my son got a rash so bad is was bleeding and infected. My pedi was like "get him some real nappies" So we literally went to Target and bought out Charlie Bananas right after an appt. I was like no way does this save money...but it does and it happens quickly.

I'm going to give it a try. DH said that it's completely up to me. Part of it will also depends on whether or not the daycare is ok with it. DD will be there M-F, so if they aren't ok with it then there really isn't a point.

When I first started researching costs, I looked at the cost of a complete set of BumGenius AIOs because I didn't know anything about the different types of CDs and those looked to be the easiest to deal with. I compared that to the cheapest, largest pack of Huggies and Pampers I could get. What I found was that for the first year, the cost was about the same. After that, the CDs would have paid for themselves.

As I learned more about the different options and their costs, I realized that the dollar figure I came up with for CDs was a maximum (AIOs are considered "premium" are are the most expensive) and could be done for much cheaper whereas the cost for disposables was a minimum and would most likely run a good bit higher.

It might be worth going through something like that with your DH and see how he feels about the numbers then.
